I applied to MIT in 1999 and was accepted early. I didn’t have exceptional grades (3.6 GPA) or an exceptional SAT score (1420). I had a few extracurricular like glee club and chess club (pretty nerdy) but nothing spectacular except that I had taught myself electronics using an old kit that belonged to my father who passed away when I was very young.In addition to all the regular applications stuff like transcripts, interview and essays, there was a page on the application which was left blank for the applicant to fill with whatever they wanted. You could write a poem, make a sketch, draw a diagram, paste a picture, etc.I went to RadioShack and bought a recording chip, a little red push button, small speaker, battery holder and PCB board. I sandwiched the board on the back of the paper and placed the push button, speaker, battery and chip on the front and soldered the whole thing together. I wrote “press the button” on the front of the paper with an arrow pointing to the red button.It looked something like this, imagine a paper sandwiched in between the green PCB and the brown back part. (This image, although similar, is not of the device I made, it was borrowed from from 10s LIGHT SENSOR RECORD device voice module music box sound chip automatic talk | eBay).When you pressed the button it played the recording that said: “Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to admit me to MIT. This message will NOT self destruct. Play it back as many times as necessary to admit me to MIT”Years later I stopped by the admissions office to inquire about it. They said they remembered the application, it had stopped playing but they still had the device saved in the archives.

Anyone can achieve this by simply making conscious decisions towards this goal.Attempt to get to a good university — ranked by prestige, teaching, and networking.Don’t do degrees which are non-marketable like classics or gender studies. Instead, find areas that are the most marketable. The easiest one is probably Computer Science.Don’t spend too much time on subjects which do not benefit you and you have to take them to fill requirements. Do focus on courses that are marketable and useful — ranging anywhere from being directly useful and indirectly giving you intuition.Still, make sure you get a grade high enough to pass initial stages of internship/job applications but not high enough that you don’t have time for anything else; the time for revising and preparing for exams can better be spent on learning the skills lacking in your courses or networking. (NOTE: depends on the subject you are learning. Research it before.)Apply to internships for the breaks. if you can’t find an internship, do your own side-project and hone your skills by yourself. At some point, you will get it.Learn job-application skills. In particular, how to present yourself in an interview. Necessary to show your skills to employees and get hired both in internships and graduate jobs.If you do all of these with hard-work and motivation, you are practically almost guaranteed to earn a 6-figure job in the US or, at least, close to it.Note that you can still earn a 6-figure job even without going to university or attaining a marketable degree. You need to learn the skills in your own time and likely work for not a lot of money at first to gain experience.

I am going to share my interview experience in the below lines . I will try to cite the questions that were being asked to me as far as my memory goes.My interview was scheduled at 3rd from the last. So I had lunch and Friday prayers then waited patiently and tried to stay calm and confident. It was roughly 4:45 pm when my name was called for the interview. So here the experience goes(I am mentioning the questions along with the answers which I gave) :Interviewer : Introduce urselfMe : Introduced myself to all.Told about my graduation college and about my current job i.e. in BSNL.Interviewer : Tell me about the subjects u have learnt in ur B.techMe : I mentioned Mathematics , Computer Architecture and Theory of ComputationHead Interviewer : What is Flynn's classification of http://architecture.Name them.Me : Answered each of the types .Interviewer : How does out of order execution occurs in pipe lined environment ?Me : Answered.Interviewer : What are the types of the hazards which are there in pipelining ?Me : Answered.Interviewer : What are the different types of data hazards ?Me : Answered with elaboration.Interviewer : What are the ways to reduce or eliminate control(branch hazards) ?Me : Answered with elaboration.Then questions on Maths were asked.They are as follow :Interviewer : Explain about lattice.Me : Explained properlyInterviewer : Some mathematical modelling problem.Me : With a bit of hint from their side , I could come to the conclusion and answered rightly that it was related to bipartite graph.Interviewer : What is Taylor's Theorem ?Me : I clearly admitted to them that I was unable to recall as I studied about it way back in 2nd semester.Interviewer : What is bijective and surjective function ?Me : ExplainedThen some questions about Theory Of Computation.Interviewer : What are the types of grammars ?Me : Answered and elaborated [ Type-0 to Type-3 ].Interviewer : What is the practical use of regular and context free grammars ?Me : Answered.Other interviewer : Which programming language u r comfortable in ?Me : I was very straightforward in this and told "C" bcoz I do not know each and every things of OOPS in C++ and also as far as Python is concerned , I know the basics of it only.Interviewer : What r the command line arguments in int main()Me : Answered.Interviewer : To read or write from an arbitrary location from file , which function we need to use ?Me : Answered(It was fseek() function)..Interviewer : What does ls command do ?Me : Answered.Then some project related questions are asked regarding working and some basic terminologies behind it .Interviewer : Tell me the pros and cons of collaborative and content based filtering .Me : Answered .[My project was based on content based filtering]Then the head interviewer took notice of the fact that I know six languages via the bio data form that they provided to fill prior to the interview.Head Interviewer [In an appreciating tone] : How do you know so many languages ?Me : Explained the reason behind each of them.Finally some non tech question to conclude.Interviewer : You are currently working in BSNL and that too in ur home state.. So what has made you think to join ISRO ?Me : As a responsible citizen of our country , we are obliged to serve anywhere throughout the country.Interviewer(Counter question) : That BSNL also does..So why ISRO ?Me : Beyond doubt BSNL is also obliged to serve countrywide.But as far as ISRO is concerned , it is based on space science which has wider implications on the society.[To add on] I got the inspiration to work in ISRO from Honble Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam with whom I interacted personally while I was in Class 10th..His zeal , simplicity and enthusiasm to work selflessly for the country has inspired me to move on..And hence if I am given a chance to serve ISRO in case I am selected , then I will give my best to serve my nation and the society.The interviewers appreciated my answer and responded positively.The interview lasted for around half an hour.[By and large , others had around 15-20 minutes of interview].In a nutshell , this interview was one of the nice interviews I ever had..And finally I was overwhelmed when I got the news of my selection in ISRO on 14th March , 2018..So some of the suggestions which I want to give for upcoming aspirants :Prepare at least 3–4 subjects well which one is well versed with.Do not ignore subjects like software engg which is not in GATE syllabus but they may ask still.When asked for programming language , one should tell the one which one is comfortable in . It is not the case that if one tells Python or Java , he/she will be in advantageous position . This gives interviewer a chance to ask in a more vast manner.One should prepare the B.Tech project abstract , the concepts behind it and its applications in contemporary scenario.One important thing to ponder over is one should be confident and honest with one’s answers . If one does not know about a particular question , it is better to think for a while and then admitting that one does not know about that rather than mugging it up (as the interviewers are very well experienced).All the best to future ISRO aspirants..Good luck..:)
