See the colors, the shapes, the patterns in the textiles and forms?Or your dinner plates. Dammit, he knocked over the lamp (product designer) and now you’ll have to go buy a new one. You’ll have to get into your car (car designer, usually modeled in CLAY first, listen up, ceramicists, before going to CAD) and sit in those luxury seats with that roomy red and gray interior (textile/surface/car designer) to get there. Can’t remember where it is, but you’ll just watch for the signs (graphic designer). And remember to pick up some cat food—not sure which brand but it’s in the big bag with the orange and tan colors (graphic/product designers).Every. Single. Thing. that you SEE around you, save for what was produced by nature, had an ARTIST involved in it SOMEWHERE. I dare you to look around you within a 10-foot radius and identify one thing (not made by nature) that doesn’t have some sort of design, color, form, or pattern to it. Yes, even that boring gray low-shag standard-issue apartment carpeting WAS DESIGNED. Someone picked out that particular fiber, that particular shade of color, and that particular weave structure at some point in time. The office carpeting with that hideous design? Unfortunately someone DID design that. (Not all design is good design.) An interior designer set up the layout.What I’m saying is, YOU DO NOT REALIZE HOW MUCH ART AFFECTS YOUR DAILY LIFE. Not just art in the type that hangs on the wall of your home or museum, but just in everyday life!Not all of us will be in museums. Everybody cannot be Pollock or a Van Gogh. But there are PLENTY of jobs available. I’d run out of space listing all of them, though a read through this should begin to wake you up to the possibilities.Someone has to design the book covers, the promotional brochures, the TV commercials, the products themselves… who do you think does all of that? Elves? Magic? One just pushes a button on a computer and voila, design happens?Not so, my friend. And since Art has rules and theories about object placement and color temperature and balance and positive/negative space and color theory and appearance in 3D space translated to 2D output and there are rules of motion for animation and there are rules about how to get attention with design and how to make clothes that fit and how to dye things that do not run when washed and such, there is a lot to be TAUGHT.And learned.And THAT is why a degree in Art is useFUL, not useless.The only thing useless is someone who gets a degree in Art and doesn’t have the creativity to figure out how to apply it well.Oh, and you can also teach, if you want to.
