So I had this happen to me on a flight from Turkey to Nice France.I got on the flight as one of the last passengers as I hate standing in line in the “sauna” skyway. I get to where my seat is and I had specifically asked for a window seat and was assigned one. I get to my seat and there is a Turkish guy sitting in my seat.I ask him in english to move as he is in my seat.He replied in broken french( my french is really good, so we continued in French) that this was his seat!I replied that is was not as I have the seat assignment for the window and he in my seat 12A. He says no it’s his, I ask to see his ticket, he shows me his and it says 12 C.I understand that maybe he doesn’t understand that the seat lettering starts with A at the window. So I explained to him that the seats go A to F from port to Starboard, and that his is the isle seat and that we will have a open seat between us. He doesn’t understand exactly and seems to be making a bit of a fuss, and I’m starting to call an air hostess, when he gets up and moves to the seat that was actually his.I take my window seat and he’s ok with it all…..Story doesn’t end there…So this was durring covid and the flights just started to begin again, the airlines have us fill out paperwork that asks our address, ph number, where we have been, if we have a covid test done I. The last 24 hrs…. The guy in 12C looks at me and is all confused about the paperwork, I explain to him that he has to fill out the paperwork to tell the authorities tracing info in case we all get sick… He still has a confused look on his face with his shoulders up and classic French pout on his face.Now I’m confused at what he doesn’t understand. He hands me the paperwork and the pin and asks me to fill it out…Now I’m even more confused…He was illiterate.He couldn’t read or write in French or Arabic. I’m a pretty bad speller in English, and I can’t write French to save my life and Arabic is a no go at all for me so I feel his pain to an extent, and that explains the seat assignment problem, he didn’t know what the letters were!So we did all the paperwork together and I asked him what he did as a job and how he survived. He said he lives in France and is an owner of a small construction company! I said WOW! How to do all that is necessary in business when you can’t write the language you are working in?His reply, “That is why I have a Secratary!”Made sense to me!He was a nice guy and we ended up having a nice conversation!
