I am from Mechanical engineering.I took a introductory course to programming in C in my 1st first year.I did some amount of competitive programming.It helped me gaining proficiency in C, C++.I did some amount of front-end stuff, but my GSoC project was in C.With this background I was able to get in GSoC. So, yes non computer science students can definitely do GSoC.How??? Well Google , stack overflow, Quora , blogs are your best friends. Almost every doubt you have for GSoC is already been answered.So, let's break down the whole GSoC thing.You should know a programming language and be good enough to read and write code in it. How? If you search how to learn a language you will get many results.You should be able to use tools such as version control, IDE. How? You will find many tutorial for this if you google them.You should be able to deal with large source code. How?? When you work on code of any project in open source, they have documentation for it, read it, take help from the community of that project, via mailing list, irc, etc.You should be able to create a good proposal. This is the most important point in whole GSoC thing. There are many answers for this. All I can say is start early, communicate with your org, take feedback for the proposal from the org.The above points I mentioned, most of them are not part of computer science curriculum at least in my college. Computer science students learn this things with the help of Google, stack overflow, Quora,blogs, etc. And if they can you can.So, to sum up , Any Body Can Do GSoC (ABCDG) :pComment if you have any questions!!!Edit : 3 students were selected for GSoC’17 from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology,Nagpur , Nagpur and all of them were non computer science ( 1 Mechanical, 2 Electrical) .

Having worked as an alumni director, let me add 2 things that many institutions may not do1) fundraising from those without "big bucks"- institutions seek only those alumni who can donate generously. They neglect the hundreds (thousands?) of alumni who could be giving small donations- which, if they donate yearly, adds up and those donors who start small may end up giving larger donations over time2) fundraising is a two-way street- with any org. this applies but definitely for institutions with alumni. Do for your alumni first and they will help you back. For example:- use your older, established alumni to help young alumni find jobs (push resumes to the top of the pile)- get alumni back in touch with each other- an idea I used which worked: set up a small business committee (made up of alumni who are lawyers, marketing persons, accountants etc)allow alumni to present business plans to this committee and receive feedback- for free. alumni members on the committee feel like they're giving back to the institution and if the alum opens the small business and is successful, he'll remember the institution that provided him with expert advicealumni are not cash cows- interact with them, keep them in touch and eventually you will see an ROI

I studied at NID. My view is:It is equally the responsibility of NID to support and inspire NIDians for the positive and creative activities and inviting alumni for 'Institution Building' and spreading 'design' activities world wide. These days use of technology permits such activities worldwide faster than in past.NID need to consider this humble feedback from the person like me who invested 40 years working with NID from 1969 to 2009 in various positions.
