My son was boy scout. He wanted badly to be an eagle scout and to be the senior patrol leader of his troop. The scouts have a leadership program for senior patrol leaders (and other exceptional scouts) called National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). It is an in depth leadership course that teaches a scout how to lead a troop. For those that aren’t familiar with scouting, troops are “boy lead,” the adults provide guidance and safety, but done correctly, a 14–18 year old boy is the “guy in charge.”My son achieved his goal of being elected to be the next senior patrol leader of his troop. He was sent to NYLT and thrived. He just ate up all the training and came home more enthused than I’d ever imagined. My 15 year old had changed dramatically, in a week. A couple months later he was invited to be an instructor at the next summer’s NYLT. Yep, the boys teach the boys leadership, it is a fabulous program.My son didn’t yet have his license for the first planning meeting for his NYLT staff group. I drove my young man to the meeting place, my kid, child. I remember so many times like this, he’d slide behind me on approach to an unknown person. He would hesitate, not sure what to do or how to act. He wouldn’t initiate contact or conversation. Yah, no, I pratically had to jog to keep up. He walked in, introduced himself to the checkin staff, told me where to drop the bags I’d help carried, hugged me briefly and disappeared. I dazedly looked at the scouter (adult volunteer) next to me and said, “and then there’s the point when you realize you’re merely transportation.” The scouter put his hand on my shoulder and replied, “he’s a great kid, we all love him.”

The Boy Scouts were overtaken by evangelical Christians. This process was only beginning when I was a scout in the 1970s. It wrecked the experience for many boys who were not themselves religious.The Boy Scouts has paramilitary roots. The flags and uniforms and ceremonies always had a certain creepy Hitler-Youth-esque feel that actually pulled some boys in the direction of neo-Nazism (including a good friend of mine). Most appalling was that the troop leadership did not recognize this and put a stop to it.Camping and hiking changed over the last 50 years. You pretty much cannot build a campfire in a National Forest anymore, and the growing US population has put tremendous strain on campgrounds and hiking trails. I don’t know how Scout troops deal with this today.Girls don’t have to stay at home in long skirts and learn to embroider any longer. But the Boy Scouts were unable to overcome their misogyny and let girls participate.The youth-leadership model of the Boy Scouts is partly to blame for abuse going unnoticed. I think youth-leadership is a great idea, but it has to be carefully backed up with adult supervision or bad stuff happens. (I could tell some tales from personal experience that would horrify you).There was always trouble getting parents to participate in activities, and little effort to train them up, so they would know what they needed to watch out for. In today’s litigious world, I would think that a Scout-like organization would have to do better at getting adult participation, which in turn would reduce the ability for abusers to get ahold of the scouts.Any all-boys activity is going to be a magnet for sexual predators, especially if there is not a lot of backup adult supervision.The Boy Scout system could not handle our increasing expectations of legal care, making lawsuits inevitable. The national organization became a litigation target when individual troops had an issue. A reorganization might remedy this (without reducing the problem of abuse, unfortunately).
