Ever wondered why the nature appear so random sometimes?I think fractals can be quite fascinating, and they appear almost everywhere in our everyday lives and in the nature.So what is a fractal?It is a repeated pattern that never end, and they look similar to themselves wherever you look at the object.Let’s start with a triangle. Repeat itself again and again and again![1]If we do this enough times, we will have a never ending pattern. No matter where we zoom in on the object, we will have the same patterns as the initial object.Mathematically, it is a series of calculations that are fed into the calculation itself an infinite number of times:[math]X_{NEW} = X_{OLD}^2 + Y[/math]Where [math]X_{OLD}^2 + Y[/math] becomes the [math]X_{NEW}[/math] in the new calculation, and this is repeated an infinite number of times.So why is it interesting?Because we see it everywhere![2]Look at a caulifloweror look at a mountainI actually believe fractals were the reason why it became possible to animate realistic mountains in movies for the first time. It was difficult to animate something looking so random, until they thought about using fractals generated randomly.Look at this:[3]or a snowflake[4]What about fractals in arts?It is even the painting style of the famous artist Jackson Pollock, who had this piece of work sold for 2 million USD in 1973 (highest price paid for a painting at that time)[5]No matter where you are looking at the painting, it is difficult to tell whether you are looking at something closer to or further away from!This is just a snippet from the original piece above.
