PDF Editor FAQ

In your opinion, are there any "perfect" films? Why or why not?

The most perfect film?My choice is Double indemnity. A classic film noir that tells the story of an insurance scam that has gone seriously wrong. The film starts with a badly wounded Fred MacMurray dictating a message to his boss, (and the film audience) about how he got into the desperate state he’s in.MacMurray plays Walter Neff, the insurance salesman and average guy who throws his life away because of a dame. Edward G. Robinson as Barton Keyes, the claims manager who loves his job. His “little man inside” tells him when an insurance claim is phony.Barbara Stanwyck is Phyllis Dietrichson, one of the most evil characters ever to appear on screen. The final confrontation between her and Fred MacMurray, where MacMurray realises he had been set up as a patsy right from the start brings everything together beautifully.Script written by Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder. Directed by Billy Wilder. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, but got none. Should have got them all.

Why didn't Prussia completely take over France in the Franco-Prussian War?

#1. Because Germany never occupied the entirety of France during the warThe map above shows where the combat took place in the Franco Prussian war. The Germans could only have military control over France where it is occupied during the war because after signing the armistice to end the war in January 28th 1871, further military aggression was impossible (except for the front around Dijon and Amiens). It was only the north east of France that directly saw military actions and many rural French men living in the south was indifferent with the wars outcome. It is far better to let these southerners indifferent rather than provoke them with occupation and let them join the war as well. In fact, the Germans were already suffering from francs-tireurs attacks from the east, destruction of towns and railroads by both sides.#2. How would they maintain tight control?Let’s say Prussia did take over entire France. The entire deployment of German forces in the war was 1.5 million. Right before the sign of the armistice, there were 730,000 German troops in France. A further 200,000 were Landwehr-a German second-line reserve unit-and when occupying entire France, they would be called up. But, you still can’t contain Europe’s biggest and the most populated power (excluding Russia) with just 1 million troops. In fact, France right after war time was extremely unstable. There were violent rebellions like the Paris Commune, not just the socialists and communists, but the commoners also felt betrayed by the new government which failed to save France from defeat. Bismarck was smart. Instead of sacrificing German lives suppressing these anti-government rebellions, he released captured French troops which was lead by MacMahon to suppress the Communards. It worked.French government troops#3. Would Germans like that? The war was for the German unification. To successfully maintain unification, you need the German people to support it. The Franco-Prussian war was an expensive war.Unlike the Austro-Prussian War, the Germans pushed a harsh term against their foe. Naturally, their foe fought to the death and it took a total seven months to end it.Not only did the continuance of the war require massive amount of supplies for food and fodder, it also sacrificed the convenience of the German people. For Prussia, it was possible for the government to take over private railroads in times of war. War materials such as heavy siege guns, ammunition, reinforcements were always a priority and so many young men had to be mobilized away from civilian life. The occupation of entire France would be equivalent to the continuance of the war both requiring heavy supplies and sacrifice. The only thing that is not equivalent is that there is no combat, but others would remain exactly the same.1870 Prussian railway#4. ExhaustionNot just the civilians, but the direct victims of war would be the actual soldiers. The I Bavarian Corps which joined the war in 35,000 strength in August 1870 was depleted less than half strength by December. The Siege of Paris is now continuing awfully long. During the siege, every officer should stay in 24 hour duty and at the following day a one day rest. When this type of life continues, naturally would human beings feel fatigue. The rankers in the trenches were even more exhausted. Even though there were no problems in supplies, the weather got cold since November. By December, the ground froze and it snowed. The soldiers in the 1st parallel which would be the closest trench to the enemy could be reached by the Chassepot rifle, therefore under constant threat of getting shot. Besides that, the French frequently opened bombardments against the entrenched Germans.Exhaustion was a major element. Moltke initially planned to send these boys to their home by Christmas, but it continued on and on. Bismarck had to lessen the terms for peace (5 billion francs indemnity from 6 billion, excluding Belfort from annexation) to finally get the French to talk. The war was ended in haste by February 1871 with a quick victory march in March 1st.To occupy entire France would mean let these troops to stay away from their homes even longer. An unnecessary waste of youth to occupy France which was juiceless? That was never acceptable.-Jihoon Seo-

What innocent-seeming picture is actually heartbreaking?

At first glance, this image seems harmless enough. A little girl sitting on a lifeboat. But the story behind it is tragic. The little girl in the photo escaped death twice in the space of a week.Eleven year old Terry Jo Duperrault was left to die on a ship after her whole family was murdered. On November 12, 1961, Terry Jo, her parents, and two siblings traveled back from The Bahamas where they spent the week snorkeling and collecting shells on the beach. The Duperrault familyThe ship they traveled on was named Bluebelle, and it was captained by Julian Harvey, a former Air Force fighter pilot and an experienced sailor.Harvey was accompanied by his sixth wife, whom he had married in July earlier that year. That night, Harvey drowned his wife. He was caught in the act by Mr Duperrault (Terry Jo's father). Since Harvey couldn't just let Mr D. go since Mr. D was a witness to a murder, Harvey killed him. Harvey also killed Mrs. Duperrault and both of Terry Jo's siblings, her brother Brian (who was 14), and sister Renee (7).It is believed Harvey planned to kill his wife to collect on her $20,000 double indemnity insurance policy but was observed by Dr. Duperrault, and then had to kill him, his wife, and two of his children, who may have witnessed his murder. It was later found that Harvey had survived a car accident that claimed another of his six wives and her mother, and that his yacht Torbatross and his powerboat Valiant had sunk under suspicious circumstances, yielding large insurance settlements. [1][1][1][1]Before the horrific murders began, Terry Jo was sleeping below deck while her family stayed in the cockpit. She was startled awake when she heard her brother yelling, "Help, Daddy! Help!"She also heard brief running and stamping noises, followed by a deathly silence. She laid in her bed, scared out of her wits, too scared to go up to see what was happening.Later, she slowly left her room to see what had happened. She saw her mother and brother lying crumpled in a pool of blood in the main cabin. She instantly knew they were dead. She climbed up the stairs and stuck her head out of the hatch. Harvey suddenly lunged at her, and shoved her down the stairs."Get back down there!" he growled.Terry Jo didn't have time to deal with what she had just found out, that her whole family was probably dead and the murderer was still on the ship.Because around that same time, the ship started sinking. Harvey orchestrated this so he could abandon the bodies of his victims at sea. That was why he told Terry Jo to stay down in the cabin, because he wanted her to go down with the ship.He underestimated the eleven year old girl's will to survive.Terry Jo watched from her cabin in the sinking ship as Harvey sailed away in a small dinghy. When Harvey was gone, Terry Jo quickly took a cork life boat and launched herself on it. The ship carrying her dead family sank.Terry Jo went on to spend four days at sea on that flimsy plastic raft, without food, change of clothes, or water. Her throat burned from thirst, and her stomach ached from hunger, she had no cover from the sun's merciless heat; it's a wonder the girl survived at all.On the fourth day since the ship sank, Terry Jo was rescued by a passing ship. This haunting picture was taken just before she was rescued.Terry at the hospital after being rescuedHarvey thought he had it all figured out. He went to the authorities and reported that he was the only survivor in a tragic sinking, and that he barely escaped with his life.Things took a very different turn when it was revealed the ship had another survivor. The following day, Harvey was found dead in his hotel room, in an apparent suicide. He knew he would be convicted of those murders, and didn't see the point in living anymore. His ashes were scattered at sea, per his request in his suicide note.As for Terry Jo, her family's gruesome murders and her days drifting alone at sea affected her deeply, but she is a survivor. She went on to live a full life; she got married, had children and grandchildren, and found work as a Water Management Specialist.Maybe it's ironic, but she’s made it her life's mission to protect bodies of water. She wrote a book about her ordeal, which she titled Alone: Orphaned on the Ocean. [2][2][2][2]Terry in 2018She told CBS News, “I always believed I was saved for a reason. If one person heals from a life tragedy [after reading my story], my journey will have been worth it.” [3][3][3][3]Footnotes[1] Bluebelle (ship) - Wikipedia[1] Bluebelle (ship) - Wikipedia[1] Bluebelle (ship) - Wikipedia[1] Bluebelle (ship) - Wikipedia[2] The Sea Waif: A Murder on the Ocean and the Little Girl Who Stayed Alive[2] The Sea Waif: A Murder on the Ocean and the Little Girl Who Stayed Alive[2] The Sea Waif: A Murder on the Ocean and the Little Girl Who Stayed Alive[2] The Sea Waif: A Murder on the Ocean and the Little Girl Who Stayed Alive[3] Orphaned on the Ocean: The Unbelievable Story of Terry Jo Duperrault[3] Orphaned on the Ocean: The Unbelievable Story of Terry Jo Duperrault[3] Orphaned on the Ocean: The Unbelievable Story of Terry Jo Duperrault[3] Orphaned on the Ocean: The Unbelievable Story of Terry Jo Duperrault
