I arrived in Canada two years ago, looking to get a job in the field of IT. I had 12 years of experience in IT Service Management, I was ITIL certified and PMP certified.I got 3 job offers in two weeks from the day I landed in Canada and started applying for jobs.Now you might be thinking that it was my credentials that got me the job. Nope! It was the fact that for one year before I made the moved, I studied about Canadian culture and more importantly, how to take an active approach to your job search strategy.According to this report from Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), Canada will need 218,000 IT professionals by 2020, with the majority of the demand being in Ontario.Moreover, the report showed that in 2015, only 12,800 students graduated from Canadian universities with degrees in information and communications technology.So there is a clear shortage of supply and demand for IT in the near future - enter the new Canadian immigrant.But! Before you start packing your bags and your Alienware laptop, you have to consider the following challenges.Challenge 1: Canadian ExperienceThe Canadian Experience dilemma that new immigrants face is very real. “Unconcious bias”, as it’s called, results in the reader of your resume making assumptions, not about your technical skills, but your soft skills.Your school of education, country of experience, even your ethnic name can work against you.The victims of the Canadian experience problem, the immigrants, assume that it’s pride or ego of the recruiter. Or, they feel that they lack the education and qualifications needed and they go out and seek more education.According to OHRC who conducted a survey to find out what hiring manager’s mean by Canadian experience, the major issues (for an IT person) would relate to communication skills and knowledge of the Canadian workplace.(Fortunately, IT is a non regulated job, else that would be a factor too)Challenge 2: The competitionAlthough the statistics above show that there is only a shortage of IT graduates, it excluded other immigrants and graduates from other fields who may have decided to take up IT as a career.At the company I work for in the IT department, only a handful of people graduated with IT certifications.Getting a job in Canada is a race, pure and simple. You have to beat the competition by standing out from the crowd. That’s what I did to land those job offers.For one of them, I literally snail mail posted my resume to the recruiter. She called me only because my resume ended up on her desk, telling me that it was very unorthodox to do so, but it worked!The solutionThere are many ways to get around the Canadian experience challenge.IT is technically practiced the same way globally as we all pretty much use a standard set of products - Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco…….But “Canadian Experience” does not refer to your technical skills. In Canada, one of the biggest cultural differences in the workplace as compared to, say, India, is that there is as much importance placed on soft skills than technical skills.I can literally see the difference in some Quora questions - “How do I get a job in Canada with two years experience in Service Now.”I got my job in IT where Service Now was the primary tool, and I didn’t even know what Service Now was at the time.Canadian employees value soft skills and communication, because they accept the fact that technical skills can be taught. If you want to get past the Canadian experience problems, you can:Do volunteering in your field and make sure it’s mentioned in your resumeFind a mentorAttend local education courses in Canada.Professionally network network networkAnd many more…..Any of the above will help you gain Canadian experience in the eyes of the recruiter or hiring manager. Remember, this dilemma is based on perception not facts, and it’s up to you to control that perception.As for your competition, taking an active approach to your IT job search strategy is the way to go. In the IT field, there is no shortage of networking events. All the global companies I mentioned above have strong presence in Canada and host public events.I successfully found a great job with a great company in IT, but I understand that a lot of new immigrants in the IT field still struggle. They may have the technical strengths and skills, but lack knowledge on how to get noticed in this highly competitive field.When you’re applying for a job in IT, you are competing with an average of ~250 other applicants for the same job.
