You two will talk about the future (called future faking). Fantasizing about a special life together and having an amazing lifestyle. The relationship is born.THE LET DOWNBy the time you have said ‘I love you’ and exposed your vulnerabilities and secrets, you are securely and exclusively bonded. Now, the chase is over. The Narcissist has nowhere else to go with you. The plane has reached its cruising altitude. The Narcissist begins to relinquish. They expended all their energy during the love-bombing and now the uneasiness begins.The Narcissist diverts their attention to other things. They stay late at ‘the office’, they return texts more slowly, there are gaps of time with no explanation, they complain about YOUR dedication to the relationship, YOU seem less interested, and on and on.A normally adjusted person’s first response to change is always, always to question their actions and behavior. For example, if your boss does not say good morning as they always do, you wonder if you said/did something the day before to annoy them. Well…The Narcissist capitalizes on this response by making you believe you are the cause of their change in moods or their interest levels in spending time with you.So, you double down your efforts. You improve yourself to be more attractive or more interested in the Narcissist’s needs. YOU LOVE THEM. You naturally want to be a great partner. You don’t know what a Narcissist is or you convince yourself that any loving acts they have done are proof they can’t be a Narcissist.Depending on your tolerance, there is a point where you openly start questioning and pushing back. You demand they explain themselves. You demand apologies. You discover some deceptions and even cheating. As twisted as this sounds, you have now started the BUILD UP phase all over again. The plane has lost altitude and the Narcissist is ‘motivated’ to secure you again with the joys of love-bombing. They are only motivated to keep you secured. They get to experience ‘winning’ you over again. It is always for THEIR BENEFIT.RINSE AND REPEATThis cycle of BUILD UP and LET DOWN will continue over and over. My experiences are the BUILD UP cycles shorten and the LET DOWN cycles lengthen over time. You become so self-focused on your behavior and your actions (Being perfect - Also called, walking on eggshells) that you let the Narcissist operate with more and more freedoms. This is akin to how a cult conditions their followers. It is DIABOLICAL.Over time, you will breakdown - tired, sick, stressed. The worst part is you begin to dislike yourself as you see through the Narcissist’s eyes. All the things wrong with you. You hate that you did this to yourself. You feel through cycle after cycle that you are not the person you once were. You are the broken one. You are the one who needs therapy. You feel aged and you have likely done things that you never thought possible. You experienced drama, violence, incidents that never occurred in your previous life. You feel THE SHAME.This is the time when The Narcissist has no more use for you. You are the broken toy. As soon as they have the next ‘better’ option, you are discarded.These Narcissist are soul crushers. We must heal. Some of us were able to get out early or had friends and family step in to break the cycles. To those, you really did escape a house of horrors. Others were not so fortunate or did not have someone in their support system to break the cycles.The Narcissist’s ex’s are victims of abuse. Period. They believed in the Narcissist who never loved them and deceived for only their own gain. Yes, this is really dark but healing starts with acknowledgement that this is not your fault. Stop beating yourself up. Please find help. We cannot feel shame for loving the person they were not.
