Not… exactly.It was when I worked at CompUSA when my store was closing down. I was the returns manager. One of the first things that happens with a store when it’s closing is that it stops accepting returns. All sales become final. In this case we had signs up all over the place saying “All sales final. No return!” and we cashiers were writing in red magic marker on the receipts ‘All sales final. no returns’.I was the returns manager in a store that was no longer accepting returns. You can guess what my work load did. I mostly wandered around the store helping out where I could. At one point I was at customer service, dealing with a customer who wanted to return something. Well as I said, we were no longer accepting returns. His receipt even had it written in red on it. So the conversation went something like this:him: I want to return this.me: I’m sorry sir but we are not accepting returns any more.him: Why not?me: Because we are closing.him: But I want to return this.me: I’m sorry sir, but we are not accepting returns any more.him: But I drove down here to return this.me: I’m sorry sir, as it says on your receipt we are not accepting returns any more.him: But I need to return this.me: I’m sorry sir but we are not accepting returns any more.him: I want to return this.me: I’m sorry sir but we are not accepting returns.him: But I bought it last week so I’m with in the return period.me: I’m sorry sir but we are not accepting returns any more.him: Why not?me: because we are closing sir.him: But I need to return this.…This exchange actually went on for a full 20 minutes. Each time he’s getting more and more pissed off and he literally gearing up to try and strong-arm his way into a return.Finally he says “I want to see the manager right now!”I literally turned around right in front of him, clasped my hands behind my back, turned to face him with the most fake smile I could manage on my face, and said:“Hello sir, I’m the manager. How can I help you?”Dude turned tomato red and got really pissed off. He started cussing and swearing at me and said he was going to call corporate and get me fired. I reached for the phone, dialed the corporate number, put it on speaker and turned up the volume:“Hello and thank you for calling CompUSA. We regret to inform you that CompUSA will be closing its doors on [date]. But you can still cash in on some great deals. Be sure to check out our stores for closing deals on the latest hot tech. Be advised that all sales are final and we are not accepting any returns. Thank you for your business.” played over the speaker followed by a moment of silence before it repeated.

If I give you something and you want to return it or give it to someone else, that is your choice.The thing I gave you is now yours, for you to do with it whatever you want.My intention and my hope when I gave you that thing was that you would enjoy it. If it gives you pleasure to give it away, then you should.If instead you want to return it to get something closer to what you want, this act of returning it comes closer to my original intention - rather than you feeling obligated to keep something you neither want nor are interested in.Mostly, I understand the separation between what I gave you and me.You are not rejecting, giving away or returning me. What you do with it is not a reflection of us. It’s just a thing.I would like in the future to better understand how to give you the perfect gift, ideally something that not even you knew you wanted.To learn how, I need to know what you do with what I give you.If you pretend to like it or keep it to avoid hurting my feelings then I can never learn what it is you really want.
