Who are some people who turned down knighthoods or other honors of the British empire, such as Order or Member, and why did they decline?

Peter O’TooleThe legendary actor, who twice portrayed Henry II, was offered a knighthood in 1987. He declined, citing personal and political reasons, but did not elaborate. In the 50s he had been active in protesting the UK’s involvement in the Korean War. He also strongly opposed the Vietnam War. (Although the UK wasn’t directly involved in the fighting, they did support the United States.)Alan Rickman with Natasha Richardson in Blow DryMany news sources report that Alan Rickman turned down a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) during his career. This may have occurred in 2008, when advance reports listed him as a recipient of this “Queen’s Honour”. He never stated his reasons for not accepting the award.Howard GayleHoward Gayle was the first black player for Liverpool. He was offered an MBE (Member of the British Empire) in 2016 for his work with the program “Show Racism the Red Card”.However, Howard felt he could not accept the award.“I had to decline the nomination for the reason that my ancestors would be turning in their graves after how Empire and Colonialism had enslaved them…it would be a betrayal to all of the Africans who have lost their lives, or who have suffered as a result of Empire.”John CleeseThe writer and actor from Monty Python has opined that Honours from the British Empire are “something a Python shouldn’t accept.” He first rejected a CBE in 1996, calling them "silly", and three years later when he was offered a knighthood, he said he couldn’t accept, because “staying in England in the winter was too much of a price to pay" to sit in the House of Lords. He later told The Sunday Telegraph that it had been offered "not because I was such a wonderful human being, and because I'd helped them [Lib Dems] a lot". (Michael Palin disagreed and became Sir Michael in 2019.)Honor BlackmanHonor Blackman was beloved for her roles in The Avengers, Goldfinger, and many TV roles in the UK. She declined a CBE in 2002.“‘They ring you beforehand to ask if you’d like to accept, and I think they were quite shocked when I declined,’ she says. ‘But since I’m a republican I thought it would be somewhat hypocritical to pop up to the Palace.’”She had a few words about her former co-star, Sir Sean Connery:“Not like Sean, who accepts a knighthood but never comes here, doesn’t pay tax here and supported a yes vote in the referendum.”C.S. LewisThe Christian philosopher and author of the classic Chronicles of Narnia declined a CBE in 1952. A letter published after his death explained that Lewis worried the honour might be misunderstood, because it came at the recommendation of a Conservative government. He felt many believed that Christianity is "covert anti-Leftist propaganda, and my appearance in the Honours List would of course strengthen their hands. It is therefore better that I should not appear there."Dawn French and Jennifer SaundersThe actresses both rejected OBEs for services to comedy drama back in 2001. Saunders said: "If I felt I deserved a Damehood I'd accept it."“At the time, we felt that we were being paid very well to have a lot of fun. It didn't seem right somehow."We didn't deserve a pat on the back. It felt a bit fake to stand alongside people who devoted their lives to truly worthy causes."Paul WellerThe frontman for The Jam preferred to forego an MBE some years ago. His spokeswoman released a statement in 2007, saying simply: "Paul was surprised and flattered, but it wasn't really for him."George Bernard ShawThe famous playwright was thought of as egotistical, yet he disliked honors in general . He rejected a knighthood, but later, his wife persuaded him to accept the Nobel Prize for Literature.Albert FinneyThe actor who began his career in the classic Tom Jones rejected offers of a CBE in 1980 and a knighthood in 2000. He slammed the honors system as “a disease which perpetuates snobbery.”Doris LessingWinner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Lessing had been politically outspoken in her youth, and like many artists of the time, considered herself a communist. After Stalin’s crimes became known in the fifties, she rejected communism. However, when offered both an OBE and a damehood, she declined, saying, “Surely, there is something unlikable about a person, when old, accepting honors from an institution she attacked when young?” A few years later, she did accept a Companion of Honor (CH), because, she explained, “you’re not called anything."Michael SheenThe actor, best known for his role as Tony Blair in The Queen, accepted an OBE in 2009 — then quietly returned it in 2017.Sheen, who was born in Wales, agreed to give the 2017 Raymond Williams lecture. The title of his lecture was “Who speaks for Wales now?”. In preparing for this lecture, he researched the history of Wales and its relationship with Britain. The actor says “By the time I’d written that lecture…I remember sitting there going ‘I have a choice, either I don’t give this lecture and hold onto my OBE or I give this lecture and I have to give my OBE back.”"I wanted to still give the lecture so I gave my OBE back," he said.“I just realised I'd be a hypocrite if I said the things I was going to say in the lecture about the nature of the relationship between Wales and the British state and the history of it."John Oliver“I got a call from the British consulate here in New York out of nowhere saying ‘The British consulate wishes you to return the call immediately’ – which sounds like a wartime telegraph. ‘Please. Stop. Call. Stop,’” Oliver stated. “He said, ‘Would you like an OBE?’, which is like the Queen’s Honours List.“There was a moment of thinking, ‘I get to go Buckingham Palace, that would be an experience.’ Then what kicks in is, ‘Oh no I don’t want that at all. I don’t want an Order Of The British Empire. Why on earth would I want that? Then I looked up all the people who rejected it. I think the Beatles gave it back in the end.”And finally —I bet France would have made him a chevalierGeorge HarrisonBeatles fans know he and his bandmates were awarded MBEs in 1965. One of them later knelt before Queen Elizabeth as she bestowed a knighthood upon Paul McCartney in 1997. In 2018, Ringo Starr did the same before Prince William. So what happened to George?Well, in 2000, someone in the Home Office had the brilliant idea of awarding George Harrison the Order of the British Empire. That would have been a step up from the MBE, but two levels below a knighthood.George preferred to remain a Member. I hope he’d given the medal to his mum long ago.Journalist Ray Connolly, who was a friend of the Beatles, said: "Whoever it was who decided to offer him the OBE and not the knighthood was extraordinarily insensitive. George would have felt insulted - and with very good reason."George being silly with people who appreciated him.He really just wanted to be a pirate, anyway.Disabled Olympic gold medal winner Eleanor Simmonds, 14, to become youngest ever MBE (and Alan Rickman)The stars who snubbed British honours (Albert Finney, Paul Weller)Michael Sheen reveals he handed back his OBE to avoid being 'hypocrite'26 Famous People Who Surprisingly Turned Down a Knighthood (Peter O’Toole, G.B. Who was the first Irish rock star?

The earliest commercially successful & Internationally known Irish Rock Star is probaly Van Morrison who is from Belfast, Northern Ireland whose fame started with Them’s first hit in 1964. Guitarist Rory Gallagher from Cork, Ireland (via Donegal) was on the cusp of International fame in the late 60s, playing the Isle of Wight festival and having his first UK Top 20 album with Taste in 1970.Van Morrison from Belfast, Northern Ireland who had hits with Them as early as 1964 UK #10 Baby Please Don’t Go (with Gloria on the B-Side) 1965 UK #2/US #24 Here Comes the Night and 1965 US #33 Mystic Eyes solo hits from 1967 with US #10 Brown Eyed Girl, 1970 U.S. #39 Come Running, 1970 U.S. #9 Domino & 1971 U.S. #23 Blue Money. His other best known tracks from this era Gloria and Moondance were not hits for him but a 1966 sanitized cover of Gloria was a U.S. hit for the Shadows of Knight. He is currently 5th biggest selling Irish act of all time after U2, Enya, Westlife (cough) & the Cranberries with reputed sales of 50m.Them - Baby Please Don’t GoGuitarist Rory Gallagher born in Donegal , Ireland and raised from young age in Cork City had a UK #18 Album On the Boards in 1970 with rock trio Taste, this was their second album. A long solo career would follow. 7 of his first 8 solo albums would hit the UK Top 40 with 1972’s UK#9 Live in Europe and 1973,’s #12 Blueprint the most commercially successful but Irish Tour ’74 and Tattoo are maybe the classics. He was possibly even more popular on Continental Europe esp. France, Netherlands, Germany & (l believe) Greece, 30 million albums sold.Taste - Blister on the Moon (Single version)A few other commercially successful early Irish rockers include;Northern Ireland Guitarist Henry McCullough from Portstewart was on Joe Cocker’s first two 1969 albums U.S. #35 With a Little Help from my Friends*, appeared with him at Woodstock which buoyed his second album Joe Cocker to US #11. He later joined Paul Mc Cartney’s Wings leaving before the Band on the Run Album. [Note: (*) Jimmy Page plays lead on half of With a Little Help.. Henry McC on the other half].Dublin born John “Sean” Byrne was the lead singer with American Garage band the Count Five who had a massive U.S. Top 5 with Psychotic Reaction in late 1966. San Jose Rocks. Sean wrote the song and was 18 when it was released, having immigrated from Ireland to California in 1964. This track featured on Lenny Kaye’s influential Nuggets collection, was loved by gonzo music journalist Lester Bangs and would be covered by the Cramps and 70′s Dublin Punks the Radiators from Space amongst others.Another Irishman who emigrated when he was 16 and is also somewhat forgotten in his home country is Jazz Bassist Rick Laird who was born in Dublin in 1941. He emigrated with his family to New Zealand and learned to play the guitar then the upright bass. After touring in Australia he would become at 25, the house bassist in Ronnie Scott’s club from 1962 and backing the likes of Wes Montgomery and Sonny Rollins. He played with the Brian Auger Trinity circa ‘63 to ’64 Later he attended Berklee in Boston and joined John McLaughlin in the Jazz Rock Mahavishnu Orchestra.Members of Irish Beat group Bluesville had one of the earliest Irish connected US hits backing Trinity College student Ian Whitcomb (from England) on You Turn Me On which was a US #8 hit in 1965. The band Bluesville featured Mick Molloy on lead guitar, Deke O'Brien on Rhythm Guitar, Brian Lynch on bass, Ian McGarry on drums and Pete Adler and Barry Richardson on saxophones. Historic yes but mild compared to tracks above.Other Irish Beat groups included the earlier Carvelles who changed their name to the Greenbeats to play the Cavern Club in Liverpool and cut 6 singles circa ’64 to ’67 but Irish Showbands who mainly played covers were the mainstay in 60s Ireland.Live music in Ireland was dominated by the Showbands from the mid 1950s. These were versatile Irish dance bands who could play covers of the latest pop hits, rock ’n’ roll standards, country & western and even some Irish Céilí if required. Strabane’s Clipper Carlton, Brendan Bowyer & the Royal Showband, The Freshmen who were known for Beach Boy & Jan & Dean covers and Dickie Rock and the Miami Showband (7 Irish #1s) were some of the most popular. Some groups focused more on their Country & Western repetoire like Big Tom and the Main Liners. Most played in Ireland but they also played Irish Clubs in the UK, USA & Canada, some of the more soul and R&B focused showbands played Germany and some of the U.S. bases there. One showband veteran was Brendan Bowyer who joined the Royal Showband in 1957. He was an energetic performer and played the Rock ’n’ Roll hits of the day in a way that was enjoyable to Irish audiences. He was a noted Elvis impersonator and watched by Elvis in the 70s when he was based in Las Vegas. By 1962 he was a 5 year veteran of the industry and often supported by newer bands including infamously the Beatles on 2 April 1962 who opened for the Royal Showband at a concert on 2 April 1962 at the Pavilion Theatre, Liverpool, this was 6 months before their debut single Love Me Do. Brendan had 5 Irish #1s including his energetic version of the Hucklebuck in 1964 which although not a UK hit was a Top 10 in Australia on several regional charts. Hucklebuck may therefore be the first Irish Rock song to chart on any international chart.Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, Horslips and others would emerge in the early 70s but some later international stars were active in the late 60s, Brian Downey with Sugarshack & other bands, his friend Phil Lynott with Brush Shiel’s band Skid Row, Gary Moore played his debut on some of the tracks of the Johnny Duhan led Grannie’s Intentions and was also a member of Skid Row.Sugarshack hit the Irish Top 20 with Morning Dew in 1968 featuring future Thin Lizzy sticks man Brian Downey.Grannies Intentions (1969)Hozier becomes the fourth Irish artist to reach No. 1 in US | Hotpress——New Jersey’s Royal Teens - the Sham Rock, a 1958 B-Side
