PDF Editor FAQ

As a police officer, do you have a great ‘not in my job description’ story?

Dispatch sent me to an elderly lady’s house to catch a snake. Got there and a 4’ rat snake was wrapped around her bird cage trying to get at a terrified parakeet that was flailing all over the cage. Rat snakes are not poisonous so I grabbed him behind the head and he quickly wrapped himself around the length of my arm. I then got in my patrol car and drove a few miles out in the country and let him go.Another time some geese were attacking patrons at McDonald’s. Had to go run them off.Another time I lit an elderly lady’s pilot light on her heater that went out.I’ve talked to a lot of mothers wanting advice on their delinquent children.I sat outside a terrified wife’s house all night so she could sleep after her husband beat her and fled the scene.I’ve unlocked a slew of car doors.I’ve got gas for stranded motorist.I’ve been shot at 3 times, run over twice and beat with an axe handle and I’m going to stop writing because I really can’t think of a time that wasn’t in my Job description as a police officer.

What is your most memorable "that’s not in my job description" experience at work?

The Movie Theater restroom “Poop-caso”.When I worked in a local, chain movie theater, one of the floor staff duties was to check on the restrooms and do light cleaning/restocking as necessary. Things like empty the trash, refill soap and paper items, tape off clogged toilets. Minor stuff. One day when I was working concession, someone came up and said there was an issue with the ladies restroom. Okay, no big, probably out of toilet paper or something. I went to check it out.I opened the door to walk in, didn’t even step all of the way into the restroom and turned around and left. Someone had smeared shit, literal poop, all over everything. The walls, the floors, the mirrors, the sinks. EVERYWHERE. It was like something out of a horror movie.I went to the janitor closet and got the “Closed” tape and taped an X over the door. I told my manager about the issue and that I absolutely refused to clean it and they could fire me over it if they wanted to. They didn’t believe it was as bad as I said. So they went to check on it, and yeah, it was as bad as I said. About the only place they hadn’t gotten shit on appeared to be the ceiling. It was not in my job description to clean up biohazards.

Have you ever told a boss, "that isn't in my job description." What happened?

Been there. Did that. Got the t-shirt.Had a supervisor who really disliked me. She was an ex-nun. She loved the work I managed to move, but every time we had to interact, a muscle twitch in her jaw told me that she really disliked me.During an annual performance review, she said: “And you will be taking over this task going forward.” The task was one that would have added many hours of work to my already-over scheduled task list.“Unless things have changed, that isn’t in my job description,” I noted.Without missing a beat, she took my job description and wrote the new task in the appropriate place.“Now it is.”That very afternoon I applied for and got a new job in the same company, with a new (to me) and much better supervisor. Win-win.
