PDF Editor FAQ
How many years of college does it take to become a psychologist?
It depends on how you define the word “psychologist.” If you mean someone with a doctorate degree in psychology, then the number varies significantly. If you mean someone licensed to practice as a doctor, in psychology, that’s a lot more consistent. My answer is based on the U.S. model.Undergraduate Degree: 4 Years. Most folks take about four years to earn their undergraduate degree. Some can do it in two if they start in high school. Some can do it in three taking accelerated courses. Most do it in four. Some might take five if they goof around and party too much. Some might take six, if they have families to raise. I did it in about three, while my partner did his in like - omg, idk, seven? lol. You can technically get your undergrad degree in anything, but you stand a MUCH better chance of getting into good graduate programs if you have either clinical experience or research experience - better if you have both. So ideally, you should study mental health in some capacity.Masters Degree: 2 Years.Keep in mind that some (most actually) doctoral program include a master’s degree “en route.” But not all do. I’m including this because a lot of people applying to doctoral programs already have masters degrees. Usually these are in psychology, counseling, school counseling, neuroscience, etc. There are some accelerated programs that you can cram into a year, and some folks working full time might take three years, but let’s go with two. Also note that having a master’s degree isn’t always a bonus to admissions committees. Particularly if the degree is in counseling, marriage/family, it might be viewed as an obstacle because those training models can differ (sometimes a lot) from how a psychologist is trained. If the master’s degree is in research, experimental psychology, biology, neuroscience, etc., then it will probably be viewed as helpful. This is just my opinion, however.Doctoral Degree: 4–6 Years. (some folks take 7–8)This is highly dependent on the format of the program. Most Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) programs are a wee bit shorter. They often don’t require that the student teach undergraduate courses. They also jump you in on clinical practica very quickly. Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology (Ph.D.) programs might be on the longer end because they require a bit more research, often some student teaching, you don’t usually jump into clinical practice right off the bat (most programs I’ve surveyed in my research, which is on training differences/similarities, PhD programs start clinical work in the second or third year). Note that this is not a hard-and-fast rule. It can vary considerably. While this time frame generally gets you the academic requirements for your degree (courses, practicum, dissertation or doctoral project), often the degree isn’t officially awarded until the next section, pre-doc internship.Pre-Doctoral Internship: 1 Year. Most pre-doc internships or residencies are a year. However, they can sometimes be two, part time. This is required (a) of most clinical doctoral programs, and (b) of all states that license you to practice. The internship can often be (should often be) in the student’s field of interest. So you should know by the time you finish your doctoral degree, where your interests lie: forensic? neuro? pediatrics? evaluation? therapy? college counseling? expressive arts therapy? You generally find and apply to programs to which you are a good fit/match. APA internships are the preferred (and required for certain jobs, like the VA), and APPIC internships are the next best. Most states do, however, have options available for students who want to create their own (with very strict requirements).Congratulations! At this point, you might be a psychologist.Generally to get to this stage you have spent around 10 or so years in school. For many people, it’s much longer than that. Case-in-point, it took me 11 years to finally have my Ph.D. in hand.Note, that this only gets you permission to take the board exam (EPPP) and any other jurisprudence exam requirements, and send in your application. It is at this stage that the state will go through your application, transcripts, experience, letters of recommendation, exam results, etc., with a fine-toothed comb to make sure they accept every thing you’ve done - down to the signatures on your practicum forms!Post-Doctoral Fellowship: 1 Year. Most states also require ANOTHER year, at a minimum, of post-doc work before you can be fully licensed. While the state may grant you a provision license after you pas the EPPP and complete your pre-doc internship, they make you wait another year, or two, before they give your full license.SPECIALIZATIONS: 1–5 More Years. Some of the more nuanced specializations cannot be ethically practiced without additional training. The three that come to mind are neuro (for sure), forensics (not regulated, but try practicing in forensics without training and see how long that lasts lol), and psychopharm (for sure).Neuro: Most states require anyone practicing under the title of “neuropsychologist” to have two years of formal supervised training under a neuropsychology, or a degree’d specialization in neuropsychology. States vary on whether some of that experience can be pre-doc, or if the entire two years must be post-doc. If it must be post-doc then that means your two year clock doesn’t start ticking until you have your degree. In most cases, expect that a neuropsychologist spent about 13 years training.Forensic: Most states don’t regulate forensic practice the way that they do neuro. However, given that doctoral programs do not include any “real” training in law/forensics, you’d be eaten alive to try and practice in forensic settings without specialized training… either by going through a forensic program, finding a mentor with decades of forensic experience, or getting a damn law degree (the option I elected for). You can obtain the status of board certification in forensic psychology in one of three ways: (1) going to a board-approved post-doctoral fellowship program - there are only a handful, (2) getting a law degree, plus two additional years of documented experience, (3) demonstrating five additional years of documented experience. All three avenues work, but you still have to take the board’s specialty exam, and be verbally tested. Therefore, safe to say that forensic psychologists spend about 14–15 years training.Prescription/Medical Psychology: If prescribing medication (or un-prescribing in some cases) is your goal, then plan for a long road. After completing your doctoral degree, and your pre-doctoral internship, you must be fully licensed before you can apply to the post-doctoral masters’ degree programs in the US. That’s right, to prescribe medication in one of the state’s that permit such, you must go back to school and spend another 2 years obtaining a Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology. There are about a half-dozen training programs in the country, and I suspect more will pop up through medical schools, pharmacy schools, and clinical psych programs. After you do the two-year program, in most cases you must also do a year or so of preceptorship (working to get hours with a psychiatrist or prescribing psychologist, then spend a fourth year prescribing under the supervision of a psychiatrist or prescribing psychologist. So this tacks on another 3 or 4 years to the ultimate path. Meaning that in most cases a prescribing psychologist spends about 15 years training.Long time, eh?
Does fracking harm the environment?
Hydraulic fracturing itself should not necessarily be really harmful for the environment. However, well failures and accidents in the process can have hazardous consequences. This is what primarily causes public concerns about the environment---and rightfully so!Yet still, the prevention of hazards appears to be greatly lacking in the natural gas industry. I have personally looked into the ins and outs of hydraulic fracturing for a long time, while being motivated by the [persistence of my] disagreement with one of my mentors.Gas well failuresThe Pennsylvania Marcellus formation has become famous for its high frequency of gas well hazards. Taken from this report is this image, containing the data of well failures in the Marcellus play based on violations issued by the DEP, I present you this figure [1].Violations are identified as a well failure if one or more of the following is the case.Violation Codes Used to Identify Wells with Violations for Figure 7 (figure above).78.73A - Operator shall prevent gas and other fluids from lower formations from entering fresh groundwater.78.81D2 - Failure to case and cement properly through storage reservoir or storage horizon78.83A - Diameter of bore hole not 1 inch greater than casing/casing collar diameter78.73B - Excessive casing seat pressure78.83GRNDWTR - Improper casing to protect fresh groundwater78.83COALCSG - Improper coal protective casing and cementing procedures78.85 - Inadequate, insufficient, and/or improperly installed cement78.86 - Failure to report defective, insufficient, or improperly cemented casing207B - Failure to case and cement to prevent migrations into fresh groundwaterWhat the data above means is that serious defects in gas wells, that may cause hazards, occur in a pretty big rate.It is also often presumed that gas well leaks are a problem of the past, due to the advance of technology and chemistry of cement and in cementing throughout time. Incidents are occurring more frequently only because today a much larger number of gas wells are operational, so is said. But it is not true---even in percentages gas wells exhibit an increasing trend of occurrences of gas leaks (sustained casing vent flow (SCVF) and gas migration (GM)) [2].So, I have made the point that there exists a great threat of hazard under the current insecure fashion that hydraulic fracturing takes place. Now let us look at the risks it bears.Climate impactThere exists a major clash of conflicting studies on the effect of unconventional gas extraction on climate change. On the one hand, the emissions of greenhouse gasses from shale gas are lower than that of other sources, such as coal [3]. However, according to other research scientists, these lower CO2-emissions are offset by the unintended methane emissions on the extraction sites or transport routes [4][5][6]. Indeed, methane is roughly 30 times more potent as a heat-trapping gas than CO2 [7]. In reaction to this dispute, further research has suggested that if the cumulative leakage of methane gas remains under 3.2% of the extracted gas, energy transition from coal to gas would not lead to increased effects on climate change. Fortunately, by comparison, according to the EPA the American gas wells leak no more than 2,4% on average, which also has a potential of being decreased more [8]. Hughes (2011) [9], however, dismissed the data from the EPA as being largely underestimated, stating that the leakage rates will most likely be about 40% higher.Disclaimer: Perhaps it is unfair that I did not take sustainable energy (solar, wind) into consideration here. I didn't, because it would distract the reader from the actual question.Gas leakingMethane gas leaks usually occur steadily---and for a long time if remaining undetected or untreated. Cement, the material of the casing around the well, may shrink slightly. This causes shallow empty space around the annulus to form, disbonded from the soil or rock around it. If the wells passes shallow underground gassy zones, methane may escape through the spaces our the annulus. You can see this in the next figure [10].Gasses may, usually under high pressure, also escape through the casing and cement walls. This may be caused by cracks or pores in the cement casing and fill. This can lead to the excretion of gasses in ground layers where it does not naturally occur. When combined with the phenomenon named above, it may lead to serious hazards, as the high pressure of the well may exacerbate gas leaking. Various potential leaking pathways were identified [10].The mechanics of how liquids and gasses may migrate their way up to freshwater aquifers or reach the surface are, unfortunately, still largely unknown. Causes of migration may vary in different soils and research of the exact causes requires large research investments. Nevertheless, there is evidence of amounts of methane from gas wells appearing in private water wells as far as 1 km away from the nearest gas well [11], or migrating to shallow aquifers in the Marcellus formation in Pennsylvania [12].Although methane emissions may have influence on climate change, its prevalence in research papers has, in my opinion, the tendency to obscure the significance of harm that other emitted volatile pollutants from hydraulic fracturing operations may have. These pollutants include: particulate matter, carbon mono-oxide (CO), NOx, volatile organic compounds (VOC), radon and secondary pollutants such as ozone (O3). Ozone is a ‘secondary’ pollutant, because it is not emitted by gas well activities per se, but is formed by the interaction of methane, VOCs, and NOx in the presence of sunlight, all of which are emitted at the site. Some researchers stressed the need for monitoring VOC and O3-emissions at gas wells, which according to them deserve to be considered a major public health concern regarding shale gas extraction activities. (Colborn, Kwiatowski, Schultz, & Bachran, 2011; Colborn, Schultz, Herrick, & Kwiatkowski, 2014; Kibble, Cabianca, Daraktchieva, Gooding, & Smithard, 2013; a list of docs I could refer to...)So, needless to say, the climate impact of hydraulic fracturing are probably greatly underestimated.Water pollutionLeakage of fracking fluid can have huge consequences on water ecosystems. Hydraulic fracturing fluids may be harmful for plant and animal life. A major concern is the toxicity of metals that are released in the ground water, such as selenium [13]. An excess of this trace element can be lethal for a plant. And in addition to that, ingestion of it by livestock causes health problems for the latter as well [14]. Another harmful metal that may be released is molybdenum [15].The problem of water pollution by hydraulic fracturing fluid is, I suppose, that you cannot easily identify its effects on particular ecosystems due to the presence of over 1000 chemicals (as documented by Colborn et al. [16]) in the mixture. Each ecosystem will be affected differently.Water pollution is a great concern about fracking. But let me stress it again, it doesn't have to be all this harmful---it just is in the way we frack in the current fashion.Other questions that you may want to ask is:Do, due to local fracking activity, our property values drop?Does fracking harm our health?I hope I have informed you well. I greatly welcome feedback and criticque.Sources:Ingraffea, A. R. (2012, october). How do I write a good Logline for my movie?
Writing loglines is essential. In fact, I think you should develop the logline before you even start writing your script. Why?Because the logline is the core concept of your story. You need to know it and know it well. But it’s no easy task. You need to condense your screenplay’s concept, genre, story, characters, and plot to into just one to two sentences using just twenty-five to fifty words.Anything below twenty-five words — with a few exceptions — is closer to a tagline, which is used as a marketing tool on posters and advertisements and is always written by the marketing staff of the producing studio, or a professional copywriter from an ad agency. Think of a tagline as a slogan for the film.In space, no one can hear you scream. (Alien)There are 3.7 trillion fish in the ocean. They’re looking for one. (Finding Nemo)The longer you wait, the harder it gets. (The 40-Year-Old Virgin)Just because they serve you doesn’t mean they like you. (Clerks)One dream. Four Jamaicans. Twenty below zero. (Cool Runnings)Those are all tag lines.Anything above fifty words is turning into a short synopsis.Writing a compelling and engaging logline is an art form unto itself, but there’s no secret formula to success. The best you can do is learn by reading and studying what has already proven to be successful — and then apply those lessons to your loglines and what fits well with your vision. Here’s a general formula to follow… just to get things going…When [INCITING INCIDENT OCCURS], a [SPECIFIC PROTAGONIST] must [OBJECTIVE], or else [STAKES].Example:When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, a local sheriff, marine biologist, and an old seafarer must hunt the beast down before it kills again. (Jaws)Now, this is just a starting point. Not all loglines need to follow that specific formula. But what that does is give you the key elements that you can work with. Then the next step is to look up similar types of movies on IMBD and read their loglines. Then you play around with it.Below are 101 loglines you can study. You’ll find different types of structures and formulas that you can use.Study loglines to similar movies to yours. Study the loglines below. And then create a Google Doc and write dozens of versions until you find something that sounds great.Again, your logline needs to capture your screenplay’s concept, genre, story, characters, and plot to into just one to two sentences using just twenty-five to fifty words.Enjoy the loglines below. Use that above formula to start. And then get over to IMDB and look up tons of similar movies that share the genre, themes, character types, etc.Have fun with it.1.
