I was on a jury for a car accident case. The young lady had already admitted guilt, so responsibility was not in question, only how much the guy she hit was due for his supposed injuries.The guy was asking for a lot of money.As we listened to his testimony about how he was in severe pain, especially with debilitating migraines, we were told he couldn't hold down a job because of the frequent headaches that put him out of commission.His wife and grown son testified to missed vacations, ruined holidays, a complete downward spiral in quality of life for all three of them, and inability to cover bills, etc. All supposedly from the accident.Then we learned that the only treatment the guy sought for his injuries was weekly or twice weekly chiropractic appointments. For over a year. He didn't go to a regular doctor, and only got an MRI after filing his case, again after a year.We learned that he had been in business with the chiropractor in the past, and that someone connected with their business had done time for selling steroids. And that his wife had been convicted of lying to authorities about all if it.We also learned that this wasn’t his first lawsuit of this nature, and that his lawyer had represented him in that other lawsuit, too!So, it is starting to sound like the whole group of them are shady, making a living suing people, and are proven criminals and liars. Especially when the guy didn't seek medical treatment for such a long time.Upon deliberation, we asked ourselves “what is reasonable?” Asking the young lady who admitted her fault in the accident to pay for 96 chiropractic visits, an MRI, and enough other money to compensate for not working did not seem reasonable to us.In his position, any reasonable person would have sought medical treatment in a timely fashion. Anyone would have had an MRI done. None of us bought his story.We did rule in his favor, though. We awarded him the exact amount stated for the MRI.

Like many mediaeval rulers, Henry V of England had portraits painted of him, in order to portray him as being powerful, regal, wise and otherwise possessing all the attributes of a king. However, only one contemporary portrait survives.It's a bit unusual in that we only see the king in profile. The right side of his face is not shown, and there's likely a good reason for this. He probably had a terrible scar there, because when he was just sixteen years old, he fought at the battle of Shrewsbury and was injured. It wasn't any common-or-garden sort of injury, however. He was hit in the face by an arrow from a longbow, which entered his face just below the right eye and penetrated six inches into his head.Just think about that for a minute.The story of how the arrow was removed and the wound was treated is a fascinating one. It hints at the skill and sophistication of medical treatment available at the time, provided you were deemed to be valuable enough to be worth the effort.
