PDF Editor FAQ

Where would vibranium be in the periodic table?

As previously mentioned by other posters, Vibranium is a form of Unobtainium that only exists in the realms of fantasy; however, if you wanted to find a comparable location on the periodic table, that would be Titanium (22).Vibranium is described as fairly light, but requiring specialized forges to shape. It is described as resistant to all force (“reducing the applied force to zero”). Vibranium is also clearly described as a metal (High value for Compression, Stiffness, Toughness, Hardness but with low Plasticity and Elasticity). The low Malleability (as well as Plasticity and Elasticity) suggests Alkaline Earth Metals. The ease in which the material is carried/worn and used for aircraft suggests a lower atomic number. Thus, this would place it near its real world equivalent of Titanium. But, the reality is: Titanium isn’t as awe inspiring as Vibranium. Sure, maybe Vibranium is some sort of superscience alloy that uses Titanium / Zirconium fiber weaves … or some other form of technobable. But if that is the case, then it is an alloy and would not directly be found on the periodic table either. Also, it could be manufactured on Earth, once the precise ratio is known. According to Marvel lore, Wakanda is the only source of Vibranium on Earth because it was in the cargo hold of an alien spaceship that crashed into Wakanda centuries ago. If it was really an alloy, I’m sure someone from Wakanda (or Tony Stark) would have figured it out by now.

What is so great about the Periodic Table?

Imagine you are a Baby God, and you have just been given a Build-a-Universe kit. The protons look interesting, so you start sticking them together to form nuclei, but because like charges repel, the nuclei start to blow themselves apart after a bit. That's okay -- you reach over and mix in some neutrons, with all of the stickiness and none of the charge. Now you can make stable nuclei. The nuclei are all positively charged, and to finish them off and create elements, you dunk them into a pool of electrons, which cling to the nuclei and make them neutral. Now you have atoms, and your first elements. You start trying to make atoms with more and more protons, the number of which you denote by Z.Soon you see some interesting patterns. As Z gets bigger, the atoms start to get bigger and bigger -- but no, wait, then they start to shrink again. Some of the atoms are dull and inert, some are shiny and metallic. Some are quite reactive, pulling electrons off other atoms, or pushing electrons onto other atoms. At first these patterns seem random:But after some thought, you find a way to arrange the elements into a table, by increasing Z, snaking around in a certain way. Now the patterns are predictable. Atoms to the upper right are small, and like to suck up electrons; atoms to the lower left are large, and like to get rid of their electrons. Inert gases are all the way to the right. There is a broad swatch of metals in the center.Mendeleev, a Russian chemist, was the first to arrange the atoms in a table like this. Chemists had discovered a way, using X-rays, to measure the Z of different elements (K-edge spectroscopy) X-rays of the right energy could actually cause electrons from the innermost depths of the atom to be ejected, and because these electrons were so far inward, they provided a good way to measure the charge of the nucleus. But even knowing this important detail was still not enough to make sense of the different properties of the elements. Until, of course, the Table.Using the Table, Mendeleev predicted the existence of elements that had never before been observed. They were expected to have similar properties as Aluminum and Silicon, so he called them Eka-Aluminum and Eka-Silicon. A year later, his predictions were confirmed. The elements are known today as gallium and germanium.Modern day quantum mechanics provides a beautiful explanation of why the Periodic Table takes the form it does -- the spaces correspond directly to the solutions of an electron whirling around a single center of charge, with adjustments made to take into account the average field of all the other electrons. Using the mathematics, and some computation, we can understand how electrons fill up into shells (principal quantum number), how the way they bump and turn about the nucleus affects their energy (radial and angular nodes), and how they are able to be blocked by or burrow through other electrons (shielding and penetration). The Periodic Table is a symbol of our ability to make sense of the world; it is a triumph of inductive reasoning from experimental observations; and more recently, a success of the deductive power of mathematics and physics. It is the intersection of many disciplines, and is a powerful tool for chemists. If alien scientists came to visit Earth, the Periodic Table is an artifact they should find instantly familiar.

Could other alien civilizations develop completely different technology as we humans have?

Completely different… No.Followed different technological paths… Yes.Here's the thing. The periodic table is the same everywhere you go in the universe. So scientific development has to follow a certain established path. And not just the periodic table mind you. Math is also the same throughout the universe. In some alien world a wheel is still a wheel. So math as well needed to be followed. They couldn't simply bypass what we had to go through. What you can say is that they focused their technology in areas that we aren't even considering. For example… Biology!Unlike us they may have never put limitations in genetic engineering and they could've even arrived at a point where their technology is both cybernetic and biological.Maybe instead of building structures, they grow them. Maybe instead of assembling a vehicle they grow them.It isn't as far fetched as you might think it is.If we humans hadn't put so many limitations on genetic engineering and gene therapy, COVID might have never been a problem in the first place. But it was and it is a problem.Maybe their technology is both physical and mental. Which is something people also don't think about.Another possible scenario is that because they aren't as divided specie's like we are, they have come together as a species and have discovered new elements that aren't even part of the periodic table.Perhaps they are so advanced, that to them Quantum Physics is something they have already mastered. While we are still scratching our heads trying to understand it.In the end we should of course look first to ourselves. Seeing we are not heading down a good path.As a species we are divisive, conflictive, and sometimes downright lunatic.
