PDF Editor FAQ

What is your review of Avengers: Endgame (2019 movie)?

What follows is a review of Avengers: Endgame. I will begin with a spoiler-free section, and then move into a mild spoiler section with my customary warning and a little extra safeguard. No big twists will be discussed, but to discuss anything about Endgame at all is to spoil it. This is, after all, a review, and I’ve got to talk about something in the movie in order to lay out what its goals are and evaluate it.But for everybody who wants to know if they should just go see it, if you’ve been watching the MCU movies up to this point, if you enjoyed Infinity War, then stop reading this. Go out and see Endgame. Just do it. Everything will be okay. See it with a full theater, and see it as early as you can. It is very likely that you will only experience a movie like this one time, ever, and you owe it to yourself to see it with the freshest set of eyes that you can. If you have not been following along with the MCU, or have been selective about it … see it anyway. See it with the freshest eyes you can, see it with the biggest crowd you can, and see it with the biggest fans in your circle of friends. You will only experience a movie like this once. No, this spoiler-free section will not include a rating. It does not require one. If you care enough to read this at all, chances are you either already know what you have to go do, or you have already gone and seen the movie. If for whatever reason you’re worried, don’t. Just go.[SPOILER ALERT: ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE]──────────────▐█████─────────────▄▄████████████▄──────────▄██▀▀────▐███▐████▄──────▄██▀───────███▌▐██─▀██▄───▐██────────▐███─▐██───██▌──██▌────────███▌─▐██───▐██─▐██────────▐███──▐██────██▌██▌────────███▌──▐██────▐████▌───────▐███───▐██────▐████▌───────███▌──▄─▀█────▐████▌──────▐████████▄─────▐████▌──────█████████▀─────▐██▐██─────▐██▌────▀─▄█────██▌─██▌────███─────▄███───▐██──▐██▄──▐██▌───────────▄██▌───▀███─███─────────▄▄███▀────────▐██▌─▀█████████▀▀──────────███──────────────────[SPOILER ALERT: ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE]Avengers: Endgame is the 22nd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, continuing from the events of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. It is the capstone and conclusion of what Marvel Studios is now collectively dubbing the Infinity Saga, and the end of the era they began 11 years ago with Iron Man. I’ve heard people refer to Infinity War as their victory lap; if that’s the case, then Endgame is a rocket ship swinging around the rings of Saturn at the speed of light, with engines powered by pure fan-service.Infinity War saw the Avengers defeated after the mad Titan Thanos secured all six Infinity Stones; the mystic gems that each control a fundamental aspect of the universe, and all together control every aspect of the entire universe. With them, Thanos snapped his fingers, and half the life in the universe was wiped from existence, all in service of his narcissistic vision of a “better” universe. Many lost in “the Snap” include members of the Avengers themselves and their loved ones, including the heartbreaking loss of Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man. Endgame follows immediately thereafter, with the remaining Avengers, chiefly made up of the original team from the first Avengers plus a few other supporters, coming together one last time to cope with their failure and, most importantly, find a way to reverse this devastating turn of events and get back what was lost.Something I’ve gone into this saying is that it’s the biggest foregone conclusion in Hollywood blockbuster history; that we all essentially know what the story entails, because there’s only one direction it can possibly go in. The real question is how they can make the inevitable undoing of the Snap into something that’s thrilling and interesting enough to warrant a whole other three-hour movie and not feel like a predictable slog. How do the Avengers do this, what kind of obstacles show up, and how can they make this feel even remotely like a self-contained or focused film? The answers will surprise you. About every five minutes.Believe it or not, there is an Act 1 to Endgame. You would think that after Infinity War, a movie whose Act 1 is all of maybe five minutes with no establishment, it wouldn’t feel the need to slow down, but that’s dead wrong. The reason Endgame is three hours long is because after the prologue detailing the immediate aftermath of the Avengers’ encounter with Thanos in the last movie, which goes the worst way humanly possible, the Avengers are faced with years of existence in a post-Snap universe. The world from before Infinity War, just as the world from before The Winter Soldier was after that movie, is effectively erased, and the movie rolls with it completely. Nobody is in their comfort zone, and everybody who survived gets a re-establishment as Steve Rogers, Scott Lang, and Natasha Romanoff try to get the band back together for one last giant gamble to thwart the purgatory that Thanos has doomed them to. Some of the characters go exactly the way you’d think, but most of them are surprising. All of them have great character development; not all of them cope all that well. The fact that there is an Act 1 this robust is only the beginning of the surprises, because the plan they eventually go with is so completely bonkers that I would never have thought anyone would actually write it. But when the world as we knew it is already ashes slipping between our fingers, who even cares! While I will not reveal details about the Avengers’ plan or any of the things that happen from here on, suffice it to say this is not Marvel’s answer to Return of the Jedi as many would have liked to believe. It’s Marvel’s answer to CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, with a dose of Rick and Morty to spike the punch. What ensues is a heartfelt exploration into the heaviest of the regrets that have shaped the Avengers thus far, consistent with the emotional gravity you’d expect of the Russos. At the same time, it’s also the looniest collision of scenes the MCU has ever seen, as Endgame hits the gas through every opportunity that it makes available to itself with its premise, crashes into immovable objects that should ordinarily derail any other story, and then hits the gas harder to power straight through them without even a second thought. I have never seen a movie pivot so quickly from a place so sorrowful, into a tornado of fun and laughter, and then back again the way that this does. Part of what makes it work is that Endgame establishes rules for itself that guide what could be a horribly shallow plot device towards narratively meaningful material, and then recognizes the loopholes that said rules leave and dives headlong into them instead of avoiding them. What does that leave for the climax? One final, gratuitous showdown over the hottest potato in the universe, beset on all sides with cannons full of unadulterated fan-service. And that’s where I’ll leave that summary. No expense is spared, and while we all know there’s only one way it can end for the world at large, the stakes ratchet themselves up high enough that it’s anyone’s guess what it will cost for the Avengers to take the happy ending that should be impossible.Like the Avengers, Endgame knew that it had just one shot to deliver the biggest, ballsiest, most surprising magic show to bid farewell to a solid decade, and it took the Hell out of that shot without the slightest restraint. Color me impressed, Russos. I said I’d never call Endgame by its title, but through gloriously, gratuitously comic book-y quantum schenanigans that literally no other movie franchise could possibly pull off, you have managed to snatch said title from the grasp of Highlander’s disgrace and make it into something that you have completely and utterly earned. Whether or not years from now I consider this to be a good movie outside its original context is a question that I’m still weighing as I finish writing this review, but I’m never going to forget the day I went into this magic show thinking I knew how all the tricks would be done, only to fall under its spell and shout and cheer with the rest of this crowd like a big kid. One thing is certain: where I felt Infinity War was essentially a glorified sample platter, Endgame definitely feels to me more like a movie that properly stands on its own. I guess that’s what 3 hours buys you — which is another thing I suppose I’ve got to learn to respect.Any movie that can be both such a unique event and teach me something, nay, school me on something, is worth 4.5 stars out of 5, or 90%. There are definitely other movies that I’ll sooner watch again owing to the fact that they’re more succinct; movies that are more consistently artful, or that feel more meaningful to me on a personal level. But what a show!

Do you continue to patronize restaurants that are too cheap to offer WiFi to customers?

“Too Cheap”, oh you are a RIOT! You must be a hoot at parties! - Let me put it to you this way. Would you rather visit a restaurant with nice ambiance and great food, or would you rather have the money that is being spent to help provide an exemplary dining experience be funneled off to satisfy your Candy Crush addiction? So yes.. I do patronize restaurants that are ‘too cheap to offer WiFi for customers.’ Do you know what else I do on the premises of those Internet hating skinflints? I leave my phone in my handbag. I interact with the people I am sharing the time with. I take the time to investigate the menu and maybe sample some wine. In short, I enjoy an experience that is devoid of screen staring zombies, where people actually converse and create memories that don’t REQUIRE a Tweet, a Facebook post or something snapped for Instagram. Also, WHO is TOO CHEAP to pay for a phone plan that does not offer them adequate data? If you are travelling on business and need that data then your company should be footing the bill. If you are on vacation I’d think actually EXPERIENCING your vacation is better than taking half an hour to write a two star Yelp review bashing the restaurant because the person who made your latte didn’t put a heart in the foam.Lastly… oh the schadenfreude.. how I am going to laugh my wrinkled butt off if there is ever a world wide disruption of Internet access- the panic when all of the screen obsessed masses realize they have to find other ways not only to entertain themselves, but to get work done- will be PRICELESS.

How do you manage reading newspapers and other subjects for the UPSC along with previous revision?

Firstly, let me point out that Mains 2020 was my 6th attempt. Having cleared the exam twice previously, I have already covered most basics books atleast 10 times if not more. So I’m able to manage time quite effectively because I know which subjects need more attention and which areas are my weak spots. Hence, what worked for me may not work for you. That said, let me share what I used to do in my earlier attempts, this is snap of my plan before prelims 2018 (I made it to the reserve list in that attempt). Now let’s talk about what’s happening here.PLANNING. This is a plan for the last 2/3 weeks before prelims. Safe to assume that I’ve covered most topics atleast twice by this time. YET I’m still planning about what needs to be done when. Make sure that you have monthly, weekly and daily targets to guide you along the way.Divide your day into parts. My day was divided into 3 slots (4 hours, 3 hours and 1 hour) to which I would allocate a subject based on the daily plan (sample shared above). As you can see, I have a set hour for reading the newspaper in the morning, a time for giving tests, a time for writing answers and then time slots for reading revision. This is a sample of what my day looked like during lockdown in 2020. Safe to say I was the one washing the bartan at home.KNOW YOURSELF! Now that we’ve dealt with the structural parts of planning your day and weeks lets come to this. Till the time you don’t understand yourself (in terms of strengths/weaknesses etc) and your grasp of each subject you will have a tough time allocating time.Don’t put two heavy subjects together. While reading or revising try to pair an easy subject with a hard subject so that you can be completely focused during one slot and slightly relaxed during the others.Don’t be too hard on yourself. You don’t really need to revise and read all in the same day. You can keep separate days for revision. As a general rule I kept Sundays free (as you can see above) and used them to review all that I had covered in the week. This was my STRUCTURAL framework for tackling newspaper, reading and revision.Hope this helps.
