From here[1].Didn’t understand? Ok. No problem. A lil bit of background information is needed to make this out.Let’s start with the history, shall we? Well, it all started during 1970’s. The buses were given codes using the letters T, R, A, N, S and P. Yes. You guessed it right. The letters were taken from the word ‘TRANSPORT’.Putting aside the last three letters, every other letters (read series) contain 1000 buses. Every 1,000th bus of each series is numbered with the multiples of thousand without the letter. This indicated the number of buses introduced by KSRTC till date.Eg., T1, T2, T3,…..T998, T999, 1000. That is where the T series ended. In the next R series, R1, R2, R3….. R998, R999, 2000.T series : 1970R series : 1976A series : 1980N series : 1984S series : 1987P series : 1989Later, a combination of two letters was started when the P series ended.TR series : 1990TA series : 1993TN series : 1995TS series : 1997TP series : 1999Along with this series, during the period 1994 - 1999, 144 more were added to the fleet of KSRTC from their own Edappal Regional Workshop and body building unit with a special code TE.Apart from these there is a D series given for the depot vans of KSRTC, and there are few tanker lorries for KSRTC with a special series TT. KSRTC has one Central workshop, situated at Pappanamcode in Trivandrum and four regional workshops in Mavelikara, Aluva, Edappal and Kozhikode.Later KSRTC started adding an additional letter to the series of buses viz., C, M, A, E, and K. These denoted the name of the workshop where the body was built. The corporation purchases chassis from Ashley, Tata, and Eichu (Ashley and Eichu are nicknames given to Ashok Leyland and Eicher. Ashok Leyland is also called Unddakkannan and Ashokan :P :D ). The chassis are then sent to the workshops for bodybuilding. When the 55th bus of RR series was built in Kozhikode, they added the workshop code to it. Then it became RRK55. Then onward Buses were built in these workshops adding their respective codes to each series. The 1000th bus of RR series was numbered 14000.The codes given for the workshop are.The Central Workshop at Pappanamcode has a capacity to build 70 buses per month. This may lead to different spellings of some words. I don't see that being a huge problem, we currently have the jail/gaol pair, and folks accept the other as an alternate spelling, and the same for other British vs. American spellings.I gave some example words to point this out, because I think whether or not you have gone through the father/bother merger, or the cot/caught merger, those similar sounds can still be spelled the same way.
