PDF Editor FAQ

What is the most memorable mishap that's occurred in your chemistry lab (classroom or professional setting)?

As a teacher, only one odd thing has happened in my lab - otherwise, I run a very tight ship.A student was boiling some water in a beaker. The beaker shattered (as will happen). The water poured over the lab table directly above an electrical outlet. That outlet started crackling and sparking and making all sorts of odd noises. It stopped after a minute or so, but it was crazy to watch!

What is the strangest thing ever taught to you by a science teacher?

My favorite lesson was safety in the lab.My 7th grade science teacher poured ethanol on the black lab table and lit it on fire. She let it burn for a couple seconds and then threw a fire retardant apron over it.“And this is why we wear aprons and safety goggles”As a bonus:This wasn't exactly a lesson as much as my teacher being a smartass. We were talking about the animal kingdom, and one of my classmates for some reason asked my teacher how one would kill a cow.Her response?“Jump on its back and bite out its jugular.”

What is the coolest thing that a science teacher has done?

When I was in 8th grade, my teacher was demonstrating flammability. He lit a match, dropped it on the table in front of him, and said “This table is not flammable, but I can make it flammable.” He pulls out a bottle of oil and pours it on the table. This is a big table probably 4 feet high and 4x5 feet on top. He lights another match, drops it on the (now oil covered ) table, obviously lighting the surface. He lights another match and lights different areas of the table because the flame is not spreading that well. Here's the fun part. He leans over the table (which is of course on fire) to light an unlit area of the table. When he does his SILK, tie swings right through the flame and catches on fire. He doesn't notice and continues lighting unlit oil. After about 30 seconds of a bunch of 8th graders looking around at each other, my friend Kevin says “Uuuhhh… Mr. Thornal? Your tie’s on fire.” And Mr. Thornal looks down and lifts his tie and makes the greatest surprised face I have ever seen. After he puts it out, he says “Well kids, today we learned that lab tables aren't flammable, but silk sure is.”I know someone got a picture of the exact moment that he saw his flaming tie, but I'm not sure who. If I find it I will update this with it.
