I recently posted on Facebook my disappointment with the amount of bashing that goes on. Someone has, at least symbolically, linked to someone as a friend, then they go to the trouble to condemn their opinion in a semi-public/public forum. I have no problem with friends telling me I’m an idiot to my face. If it bothered me, I wouldn’t have any friends. Most of them have the grace to do it privately or in a closed circle of other friends. Usually they can give me a valid reason for doing so by rationally refuting a comment I made. When they can’t, they generally respond with, “OK, I’m an idiot! You’re right!”The point is that Facebook is not Quora or a forum dedicated to answering questions or debating issues in a knowledgeable way. It’s stated purpose is to give people an opportunity to link up with friends and share their opinions and ideas.It’s actual purpose (or it wouldn’t be free) is to get as much information about you as it possibly can harvest, that of your friends and that of anyone else who might visit your page or access a public post so they can sell it to those who want to manipulate you or, in a more positive light, provide you with services and goods you don’t know you want yet.The fact is that Facebook is a black hole for security. Limits you set on your own posts don’t have to be adhered to by “friends” re-posting your comments. The simple click on “Like” can mean “you have permission to look at the details in my profile as well as access every picture, word, song, contact, etc. that I am linked to”. This is especially true if you like a commercial application, service or product. Again, despite what you establish in your settings, let’s assume you limit your posts to friends, anything they access can be seen by their friends either through a slip up or a re-post. I noticed one day that I was reported as being in a city that was quite a distance from my actual location. It wasn’t confusion with my IP address, my wife had my account open and everything in it had assumed HER security settings.Have you ever noticed how it seems like every other word you type provokes a pop-up? It takes an awful lot of resource to do that. If you’re using Facebook on your phone, try this:Turn “data” off for every other user app and system app that will allow it.Turn off your wifi.Check your data usage. If it’s convenient, reset your storage and data usage for Facebook.Don’t touch your phone except for messages and calls (i.e., use it like a phone)After an hour, check your data usage. If you know how, see how much of that was just Facebook. Raise your lower jaw, people are staring. What in the world was Facebook looking at and sharing? You’ll never know unless you’re a hacker. If you’re a hacker, you won’t be happy. I never, NEVER use the Facebook app or Messenger. I certainly don’t give them rights to my storage, contacts, photos, media, firstborn, etc. As Facebook has made it impossible to message others without their app, I disable it between uses. Facebook on my phone is restricted to browser access where I have an add-on that limits the site’s ability to bog down my phone with its pop-ups and snooping.If you carry a smartphone you have already decided “I am willing to share everywhere I go, everything I say, everything I do and a lot of what I think with people unknown to me. Whenever you install an app from iTunes or Play or anywhere else it tells you, “I need access to: “ and it gives you a list. I’m never going to have children, but if I did these would be my rules:Ages 0–5No access to any electronic devices whatsoever. Not even limited play time.You will be raised on a healthy diet which will not include any occasional lollies or chocolate until after five years of age.You will be raised amongst pet animals (namely dogs and cats) and you will be taught to respect and honor them, as well as how to feed and water them.You will go to daycare while I work, and school as soon as you’re old enough.You will be taught that respect is earned, not given outright.You will have access to watch TV occasionally, but there’ll be no ‘kiddie’ programmes. Of course you will be watching age appropriate shows though.I will set up a college fund for you, which I will contribute $5 into weekly.If you make friends, that is fine. But I won’t allow sleep overs or visits. You can hang out with your friends at school.You will be taught how to clean your room, and be expected to at least attempt to do so regularly by age 5.Birthday parties will be small. You can invite a maximum of four friends, and they’ll have to be on their best behavior. The party will be somewhere like MacDonald’s or a park, not at home. You’ll get one present of high value, and food and drink will be provided to you and guests.Bed time will be no earlier than 7 and no later than 9. Unless unforeseen circumstances arise in which case they will be dealt with as soon as possible.Once you are old enough to start school, if the school is within walking distance and I have the time to, I will walk you to the gates at school, and pick you up after school. If it isn’t within walking distance and/or I don’t have the time to walk you, I’ll drop you off by car at the gates and pick you up.You will be left to develop your walking skill naturally. If there is some kind of physical or mental disability which hinders this, you will be seen by a doctor asap to sort the problem.You’ll be taught to swim, tie your shoelaces, read, write, brush your teeth, wash yourself etc.You’ll be taught that it’s OK to say no if you feel threatened, or feel as though you are wrongly being forced to do something against your will (this does not include me asking you to do something).You’ll be taught not to go off with any stranger, no matter what.You will be allowed to watch the news on TV to learn about current affairs (so long as I deem it appropriate for you to watch).I will encourage you to find some kind of hobby. If you don’t at this stage, that’s OK, I’m not going to force you.I don’t really believe in toys unless they are educational and enriching, i.e. puzzles, Jenga blocks, card games or board games etc.You will be drinking water 90% of the time. Fizzy drinks, cordial, and fruit juices are strictly treats to be enjoyed in moderation , i.e. birthdays or other special occasions.You will be taught to use common sense.You will be taught not to thieve. You will also be taught the emergency helpline number, so that you never forget it.Ages 5–10I will provide you with a cellphone to use. However, there will be a limit as to how much time you will be allowed to spend on it. Most likely half an hour at most. You will not have internet access or credit to make calls though. You can tell me what age appropriate game you’d like to play and I’ll download it for you.After age 5 I’ll let you have the occasional lollies or chocolate as a treat only.If you require an electronic device for school work at home, then I will provide one for you if I can. However, it will be for strictly homework only. I will monitor your use on it and it will be taken away once you’ve done your homework.If you want to hang out with friends outside of school, I’d like to meet them first. Then, we can organise for you to go out somewhere and hang out with my supervision. I don’t want any friends in my house.You need to clean your room regularly, that is, every other day at least. If you do, you may or may not be rewarded with a treat of some kind. If you don’t, you’ll be asked to stop whatever you’re doing and go and clean up your room.You will be expected to help in caring for the pets, that is feeding, watering and exercising the dogs. If you can prove you are able to properly care for the existing pets, I may provide you with your own one. But ONLY once I am completely convinced, and you are convinced, that you can care for an animal properly.You will not be allowed to have your hair dyed or stylized in an extreme way. No exceptions.You will be given pocket money weekly, the amount will not exceed $5. If you misbehave, neglect to help care for the pets or don’t clean your room, I’ll stop the payments until I see an improvement.You’ll still be raised on a healthy (but tasty) diet. Your lunches will consist of healthy and varied foods. And don’t try to throw away food because I’ll know if you have (I used to do it).If you have any questions about anything, you are only allowed to ask either myself or a teacher at school.I want you to try your best academically. I don’t care about grades, but if I get a tip from one of your teachers that concerns me, I will be helping you as best I can with your work and sending you to a tutor if I can afford it. I’m not expecting top grades, but I expect you not to be slack with your school work. You need to do all the homework that has been set for you before you can do anything else after school. No exceptions.I’m not made of money, so don’t be asking me for the latest whatever. You don’t have full use of a cellphone yet anyway. If you need clothes, it will be a case of function over form. Of course I want you to look presentable, but I’m not buying expensive clothes that don’t serve a purpose which justifies the price.I don’t want to hear rumors from school, nor do I want you buying into any of them. If you are being bullied or teased in any way, or if you’re being pressured into doing something, you need to talk to a teacher first, then me once you get home if I haven’t heard about it already.Birthdays will be the same as I stated earlier. You can, however, invite a maximum of six friends now.If you really want something, you’ll need to talk with me first. If I decide it’s OK to get it, you’ll need to start saving your pennies. I’ll pay the difference of what you haven’t saved up, but I’m not paying for it outright.If I decide to, I may allow you to have the occasional energy drink (V, Monster, Red Bull, Mother etc.) as a treat.Absolutely no alcohol whatsoever. Yes you are legally allowed to try a bit, with my supervision, but at this stage I will not permit it.Your pocket money will be increased from $5 weekly to $10 weekly. Again, if your behavior slips, I will stop making the payments.If I feel you are safe enough and school is within walking distance, I may let you walk to school and back home if you wish. If I feel it is not safe, or the school is too far away to walk to, I’ll continue to drive you to school and pick you up.You will now have credit on your phone so that you can ring me or the emergency services in an emergency. The only numbers you’ll be permitted to have on your phone at this stage will be mine and your father’s (if he’s in the picture and willing to make contact with you appropriately).You won’t have strict chores. However I do expect you, out of respect for me, to pitch in and help with cleaning up the dishes, doing washing, vacuuming the house, taking the rubbish out etc.If you feel as though you need to talk about anything at all, know that you have my full support. I am here whenever you need me, always. I’ll respect your trust in me if you choose to confide in me about something.All I ask in turn is that you respect me, talk to me respectfully, say please and thank you etc.Bedtime no later than 9 at absolute latest.Swearing or offensive language will not be tolerated at your age.I will be slightly more lenient on the drinks rule, but you will still be drinking water the majority of the time. You are too young for this.I expect you to keep good personal hygiene, i.e. brush your teeth properly, shower regularly, wear your clothes tidely and appropriately etc.If you are a girl (whether or not you’ve had your first period) you’ll be tought about periods and shown how to use sanitary products. If you’re a boy you’ll be tought about erections (not a joke, some boys start getting erections at night when they hit puberty).Thieving of any kind will not be tolerated. If I find out you have stolen something I’ll have an officer put you in a cell for a night, maybe even convict you if it’s bad enough. I will not tolerate it.Ages 10–15You now have full control over your cellphone, that includes internet, games, calls and texts. However, I do expect that you use the internet appropriately, especially social media. I will be monitoring your internet usage at home, as well as asking regarding your internet usage at school. You will be solely responsible for topping up your phone and repairing/replacing it.Your school device is still only to be used for school work, nothing else.The no friends at home rule still applies. I’m sorry but I just don’t really want a bunch of people going through my house, even if I know the friends. You are free to hang out with them elsewhere, within reasonable constraints. You still need to check with me and get my permission first. I won’t give you permission until you tell me where you’re going, how long you’ll be there, who’s going with you and what time you are arriving/leaving. Even then I may still refuse if I feel the need to.No going out anywhere without my permission. Kind of ties in with the last rule. Sorry. I am your legal guardian and you are not of majority age therefore I am responsible for you.I’ll let the occasional swear word slide if it’s by accident, but I won’t tolerate regular swearing and/or use of offensive language. I expect to be spoken to with respect , and I will do so in return.Your pocket money will be increased to $30 a fortnight (mine used to be this).You are allowed to buy your own lollies and chocolate, or energy drinks as you wish, but I would really prefer you do this in moderation. Don’t spend all your money on this.Again, if you really want something, save up for it and buy it yourself. I will no longer be contributing money towards helping you buy something. You will also now have to start making your own payments into your college fund.I expect you to continue to do your absolute best in school. Like I said, grades aren’t everything, but when you are at school I expect you to be focused on work. If you are struggling and need help, it will be provided to you.I still expect you to pitch in with household chores. Moreso now that you’re older.You still have the responsibility of helping to care for the pets, no exceptions.Not really keen on you having a boyfriend even at this stage, but if you do, I’d like to meet him first before anything gets serious. If I don’t approve of him for genuine reasons, he’s gone. No exceptions.I would prefer you make your own way to school, if it is within walking distance. If not, I’ll put you on a bus.I’d like you to start looking for part time work. Even if you can’t find any, I’d like you to show me that you’re willing to put in the effort and earn your own money. If you do find work, I’d like to meet with the boss and manager before anything’s finalized.No tattoos, piercings of any kind. I don’t like the look of them and you are not of the age I deem appropriate to be wearing them. You may dye your hair so long as I’ve checked the color first and determined it is of a natural enough shade (to meet school regulations). Still no extreme hairstyles thanks (again, in order to meet school regulations).I’m not even sure if you’d still even be interested in birthday parties at this stage. If you are though, you’ll have to arrange it with your friends, then have it approved by me. Absolutely no alcohol, drugs or smoking will be allowed.No alcohol, drugs or smoking. If I find you are involved in the usage of any of these substances, severe punishment will given, that is, the law will get involved. I will organise for a police officer to come and have a chat with you. If it happens again, I’ll have them lock you in a cell for a while to scare you. You are not of legal age to be smoking, drinking without my permission or taking any kind of drugs.No sex, whatsoever. You are not yet of legal age to consent to having sex, so don’t do it. If you do, I’ll have the partner convicted of having sex with a minor.You need to keep your personal hygiene in good nick. That means you need to do all of the basics (teeth brushing, showering etc) as well as shaving (if you’re a boy) and using sanitary items (if you’re a girl).You are not of a legal age to drive yet, or get a license, but you can prepare for the initial theory test by studying.Thieving of any kind will not be tolerated, as I stated earlier.I’ll teach you how to cook basic meals. I’ll allow you to cook dinner every now and then.Ages 16–18You’l need to stay in school, doing your absolute best and trying your hardest until you’re 18. You still need to make your own way to school as well.You can apply for your learner’s licence, and start getting driving lessons (I will pay for these). As for a car to practice in, I’ll pay one half and you can pay the other. You’ll have to pay for gas though.You can have sex with your partner (if you have one, and ONLY if you have one), provided you use protection in the form of a condom (if you’re a boy) or birth control (if you’re a girl). If you’re going to do it, do it away from my house thanks.You can come and go as you please, provided you let me know where you are going, roughly when you’ll be back and what you are going to be doing.You can’t drink alcohol, or buy it legally, until you’re 18. You can’t smoke either until you’re 18.No drugs at all, under my roof or elsewhere.By now you should have a paying part-time job. In which case I’ll no longer be giving you pocket money.I’ll allow you to cook your own meals.If I find out you’ve been thieving I’ll have you convicted. You need to take respobsibility for this.I still expect you to have good personal hygiene and presentation.I expect you to be respectful of me and I will respect you in turn.I don’t mind swearing as long as it isn’t directed at anyone in particular and isn’t used offensively. I will not tolerate directly offensive language though.I expect you to help out a lot more regarding household chores.If you ever need to talk about anything, or need help in any way, consult with me. I’ll do my absolute best to show my support.I expect that you will be thinking about your future after you have left school. I would prefer if you went to university or polytechnic, but if this isn’t for you, please let me know what you’d prefer to do instead.
