PDF Editor FAQ

How shall I score a CGPA of 10 in IITKGP with a focused study plan?

FIRST OF ALL CONGRATULATIONS ON HAVING MADE IT TO THE OLDEST AND ONE OF THE GREATEST IITs IN INDIA.Well, it’s good to see students like you who aim to score a very high CG (that’s what u say here in KGP). Do visit this page which is a must for all freshers: Fresher's guide - Metakgp Wiki. Unfortunately, there are certain luck based factors that make it almost next to impossible to get a perfect CG in 1st year (although only one student has been able to do it this year and that too in this decade or atleast 5 years).I can give you some subjectwise tips as follows:ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY: As time passes by, the syllabus keeps on decreasing with the increasing number of failures and the need for DepC Ex's and A's. As far as the session of 2017-18 is concerned, the overall syllabus is as follows:1.DC Circuits(Certain topics like Non linear elements have been removed)2. Circuits3.3 Phase Circuits (Unbalanced load not in syllabus)4.Transients (Only 1st order transients in DC and AC circuits)In most cases the midsem syllabus is upto this portion.5.Magnetic Circuits (hysteresis and eddy current losses(only qualtitaive), relays, an application of magnetic force, basic principles of stepper motor- these topics are not in syllabus)6.Single Phase transformers7.3 Phase Induction Motor(Squirrel cage only)The entire syllabus comes in the Endsem paper. From the session of 2017-18, worksheet type question papers were started for this subject, implying limited space for solving a particular question. In both midsem and endsem papers, there are a total of 6 questions out of which 5 are to be attempted. If someone attempts all 6, then the best 5 will be taken for marking. Each question has several subparts. This is one of the most dreaded subjects in the 1st year curricula. First of all the paper will be completely numerical based, so get ready for hectic calculations(in my endsem paper, my calculator showed 'STACK ERROR' while solving a magnetic circuit ;] ). Nobody can assure you about the quality of professors you can get in your class. So the best thing is to study for yourself. Focus more on numericals rather than only reading theory. As far as grading is concerned, if the coordinator and the profs teaching the subject are peaceful, then each student gets 3-5 Ex's. In 2016-17 when the cooordinator prof was a loaded one, each section had only one Ex. The subject has relative grading. In midsems(comparatively easy) marks cross 50 (for those who have practised damn well may get 60) out of 60. However endsem is the biggest bouncer where even the best students get atmost 82 or 84, after which there is a big gap and marks get down from 70s.Attendance in classes and tutorials plays a very role in your TA marks. The tutorials are of 3 hours and are taken in a alternate manner with the lab. Infact EE19001 Lab marks has 40% weightage of your tutorial test marks and attendance. Try to take maximum help from the TAs by asking them to help you with each and every concept. However be careful, sometimes they might tell you a longer method. So verify it from your professor. The biggest question is 'Where should I practise the numericals from?'. The only answer to this is 'Previous Year Question Papers' and Tutorial Sheets (http://www.ee.iitkgp.ac.in/faci_et.php) on the library website and DC++. There is no book that will ever reach the level of problems given in the paper. However this book might help you a lot : http://www.engineeringbookspdf.com/download/?file=2925. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0uVd31B7zGEWjRQNlJlX05vdms/edit this book also helps a lot. Also pay attention to your tutorial classes and those moments of time when your prof starts solving sums. I can recommend the pdf version of Thareja for some good questions, but dont rely on the answers.Infact for an idea of those complex AC DC circuit problems you can search for IES/ESE Conventional Papers for ECE and EE branches. Surprisingly they are very similar to the questions asked in exams.Generally class tests are not taken. Be ready for a 30 minute 10 marks test in the beginning of the tutorial class. Do prepare well for it because it is the only thing to save you when your midsem and endsem marks go down.PHYSICS: This is a one semester course on Waves, Oscillations and Basic Quantum Mechanics. The course structure is as follows:1. Basic equation of SHM without damping2. Oscillations with damping, their parameters and analysis3. Resonance and forced oscillations with and without damping4. Coupled Oscillations with and without damping5. Wave equation, Group and Phase Velocity6. Interference and various interferometers and resolving power7. Diffraction- Fraunhoffer (and Fresnel-It was last taught on 2010 and once again introduced in Spring 2017-18)8. Polarisation9. Basic Quantum Mechanics upto 1D Potential WEll and Quantum TunnelingMain study material- Slides(Do follow them carefully as that's the actual syllabus)(http://www.cts.iitkgp.ac.in/home/pratik/teaching.html)Books- Saraswat and Sastry, Physics-1 (by Somnath Bharadwaj and Saraswat Sastry)Be ready for class tests (total 2) in your tutorial class. You will be informed about the dates from before. Moreover, each section will have a different paper set up by the TAs. So be ready to see a complete level of difference in all the sections' papers. Some will be damn easy and some will be a hard nut to crack.Attendance in tutorials is counted in TA marks (it depends on the group of professors teaching the subject in a particular semester)Physics WAS(special emphasis) considered to be one of the subjects which could get you good grades if you are thorough with the slides and practised the problems of Somnath BHaradwaj book (till Autmun 2017). Several students could get EX grades and most of the questions were simply formula based and involved very little concept. It was the Spring Semester in 2018 that turned the table around. The grading scheme was changed from relative to absolute.Till 2017 Autumn it was- BOOKLET TYPE QUESTION CUM ANSWER SCRIPT: Enough space is provided so don't be worried except if you have the habit of cutting the entire answer and doing it again and again. But in Spring Sem it changed backed to full length answer script giving you scope for extra pages. The standard of the paper went very high. The questions were abstract and conceptual and required you to think very deep and apply concept at each and every point from scratch. Almost 121 students received F in Spring semester compared to only 8 in the Autumn Semester. Here are some tips to crack the paper: 1. Be thorough with your concepts such that you can start things right from the scratch.2. Don't rely fully on slides, read good study material like Saraswat and Sastry and Physics-1 by Somnath Bharadwaj to get hold of the basic concepts.3. Do solve all the sums in Somnath and SAraswat Sastry (They are directly copied from IE Irodov except some problems of Polarisation and Entire QM). Get hold of the solutions of Irodov [1] .4. If you want to really do good, read AP French book [2] for oscillations and waves portion and it would be awesome to read Ajoy Ghatak's book on Optics [3]. They will safeguard you from losing marks. Also solve sums from both the books.5. If you have time, you can go through MIT OCW lecture[4] (but make sure you don't sacrifice other subjects as well).MATHS 1 AND 2: BOOKLET TYPE QUESTION CUM ANSWER SCRIPT: Enough space is provided so don't be worried except if you have the habit of cutting the entire answer and doing it again and again.1 online class test and attendance for TA marks. Attend classes regularly, understand concepts, see problem solving methods in tutorials, attempt Previous Year Papers and most important practise from Kreyzig (http://instructor.sdu.edu.kz/~merey/Advanced%20Engineering%20Mathematics%2010th%20Edition.pdf) Jain and Iyengar or BS Grewal (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByWcF5oBacJEV3BfZzljdGh2YVU/view?usp=sharing). more than enough.ENGLISH FOR COMMUNICATION: As far as theory is concerned you will be basically taught a set of poems and proses with a very deep analysis. There is no grammar or writing component in the theory component of the course. So dont let the ERP syllabus divert you.The lab classes are concerned with your communication skills and the teaching style and content varies from class to class. Some sections had more emphasis on phonetics and pronunciation for a longer time while other sections would focus on professional speaking skills and some basic skills used in Group Discussion and some advanced concepts like Non Verbal Communication and the development of Music and Art. It will be a nice experience and you will get to know your friends better.Relative GradingThe midsem and endsem tests are common for all sections. What varies is the lab class evaluation. In some sections, professors do take class tests in pen and paper mode for the Theory component. If Prof. Seema Singh is your Theory teacher, then you are most likely to have 2 movie tests in Vikramshila where you will be shown a one hour movie and then do a critical analysis of it. It was an open internet and resource test. And at the end of the semester she takes a theory test where each student gets a random poem and he/she has to answer the MCQs in it. One can use internet (but its not that easy, the questions are designed ina way that you analyse through the internet and then develop an understanding.)In labs too, evaluation and activities vary.Be careful about attendance because several students get deregistered on account of their attendance. One can't give proxy as some profs take attendance themselves.Well let me clearly define the steps needed to do so:http://1.As soon as the semester starts, jot down the syllabus of the midsem and endsem as per timing.(Both are different and they might be mailed to you).If not then prompt your teacher to do so.2. The question paper structure is as follows: a. Unseen passage with MCQs (Passages are almost of the same level that you encounter in CBSE class 12 English).  b. MCQ questions from poems and proses taught in the class.  c. 2 or 3 long answer type analysis questions. You have to fill atleast 2-3 pages. 3. For part a. practise of sample papers and paragraphs would be enough.4. For part b. read all the poems and proses taught in the class line by line (not depth and with deep meaning). Have a surface reading and also take special care of new and special words mentioned behind the chapter. They ask those meanings sometimes.5. Part c. is the major mark deciding area. You will have a choice to select 1 or 2 from all poems and proses taught seperately. When your semester starts decide the chapter on which you will write the long answer. Draft a 2 or 2 .5 page answer which will include a general analysis of the poem or prose involved by seeing some good sites in Google.Don't forget to write Author's name, place and date of birth, year of publication of poem or prose. If you attatch some movies or songs(dont forget to mention band or singer name) based on the theme of the chapter. The remaining half page will be based on what the question wants or the specification of the question, which you have to develop on your own in the exam hall.MECHANICS: Absolute grading2 class tests for TA marksYou get answer scripts to write answers.Pre-Midsem portion doesn't come in Endsem.Pre-Midsem portion:1. Coordinate Systems2. 2D and 3D equilibrium problems involving: Force systems : Moment of a force about a point and about an axis; couple moment; reduction of a force system to a force and a couple. Equilibrium : Free body diagram; equations of equilibrium;3. Plane frames and Trusses4. Coulomb Friction (JEE TYPE includes rolling, slipping) and Belt frictionPost-Midsem Portion:1. Polar moment of inertia, principal axes and principal moments of inertia2.Concept of stress and strain : Normal stress, shear stress, state of stress at a point, ultimate strength, allowable stress, factor of safety; normal strain, shear strain, Hooke’s law, Poisson’s ratio, generalized Hooke’s law; analysis of axially loaded members.3.Torsion : Torsion of cylindrical bars, torsional stress, modulus of rigidity and deformation4. Flexural loading : Shear and moment in beams; load, shear and moment relationship; shear and moment diagrams5.Transformation of stress and strain : Transformation of stress and strain, principal stresses, principal strains, Mohr’s circle for stress and strain, Thin pressure vesselS.An easy subject where you can secure high grades with little practise and good understanding of concepts. Generally good professors are assigned in this course, so they explain you much nicely that the only thing you need to do back in hostel is solve a selected number of problems and the Previous Year Papers. If thats not the case with you I would recommend you to watch JEFF HANSON videos on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/1234jhansonBe ready for step marking, so even if your answer is wrong you get credits for your procedure. And do solve problems from books: Merriem Kraige Statics http://aghababaie.usc.ac.ir/files/1506464236211.pdf and Beer Johnston Material MEchanics: http://www.hljp.edu.cn/attachment/20120820084627006.pdf and Statics : https://mechzoneblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/statics-and-mechanics-of-materials.pdfPDS (C programming): It is basically equivalent to the C++ course taught in CBSE Class 11-12 with the implication that concepts related to Classes and Objects are not in C programming with some extra topics of Algorithm Analysis basics and Number Systems.Relative GradingWorksheet type papers2 class tests for TA marksIf you have studied any programming language like Java in ICSE and ISC, C++(Highest adavantage), Python and NetBeans in CBSE or anything else, then the basic concepts of programming like loops, conditionals, pointers, structures will remain the same. Only the syntactical part will change. If you haven't, it is high time that you learn C programming in your vacations (Winter and Summer). The following channels may help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWliApDc61w&list=PL2_aWCzGMAwLSqGsERZGXGkA5AfMhcknE , https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLS8ACsmFCpmSZQv44y56AviLUbvyriVYh .The course is high paced because it's quite natural that a 2 year course is compressed into a 40 hour lecture series. However , the question paper is not that easy (even for experienced students because of certain nitty-gritties involved). So practise as much as you can. And there is a PDS Doubt Session orgainised by SWG IIT Kharagpur. Do attend them.CHEMISTRY: The course is divided into 3 parts: Physical, Inorganic,Organic. Physical chemistry is taught before midsem and doesnt come in the endsem exam. The rest 2 comes in endsem.Relative grading. As per session 2017-18:Physical Chemistry Syllabus:[edit]1. Thermodynamics 2. Electrochemistry (may be excluded depending upon time left; excluded in Spring Sem) 3. Kinetics (may be excluded depending upon time left; excluded in this entire session)Inorganic Chemistry Syllabus:[edit]1. Atomic Orbitals and Molecular Orbital Theory 2. Coordination Complexes: Crystal Field Theory and Ligands 3. Chelate effect 4. Redox Reactions 5. OrganometallicsOrganic Chemistry Syllabus:[edit]1. Stereochemistry 2. Conformational Chemistry 3. Pericyclic Reactions 4. Nucleophilic Substitution of saturated C (SN1, SN2) , Elimination (E1,E2, E1CB)Student Opinion[edit]BOOKLET TYPE QUESTION CUM ANSWER SCRIPT: Enough space is provided so don't be worried except if you have the habit of cutting the entire answer and doing it again and again.Majority of the course content is quite simple as it has been covered in IITJEE syllabus. Some topics and modules are completely new. However the approach is quite different from JEE and looks at the subject in a very different perspective. The basic and complete syllabus is defined by the slides provided by the Profs and is your main study materials. Do attend classes if attendance is taken especially Organic and Inorganic because the questions asked in exams are quite different and requires the skills and concepts taught in class.Previous years practice papers are a must as questions are repeated quite often but don't expect anything about the paper as it might turn the other way round which had happened in Autumn Sem where quite lengthy and involving numericals were asked which required application of multiple formulae and concepts. No theory based descriptive questions are asked except 1-2 from Inorganic section.Online and offline class tests will be taken: 6 marks Physical, 7+7 marks for Inorganic and Organic.Must attend tutorials of Organic (you will realise the reason quite soon :) )ELECTRICAL TECH. LAB: Lab experiments:1.Characteristics of Fluorescent and Incandescent Lamp http://www.ee.iitkgp.ac.in/TeachingLabs/ElectricalTech/ET_LAB/Expt_1.pdf2.Verification of Network Theorems http://www.ee.iitkgp.ac.in/TeachingLabs/ElectricalTech/ET_LAB/et2.pdf3.R-L-C Series Circuit http://www.ee.iitkgp.ac.in/TeachingLabs/ElectricalTech/ET_LAB/et3.pdf4.Three phase power measurement by two Wattmeter method http://www.ee.iitkgp.ac.in/TeachingLabs/ElectricalTech/ET_LAB/et4.pdf5.Open-Circuit and Short-Circuit Test of Single Phase Transformer http://www.ee.iitkgp.ac.in/TeachingLabs/ElectricalTech/ET_LAB/et6.pdf6.Load test of Three Phase Induction Motor http://www.ee.iitkgp.ac.in/TeachingLabs/ElectricalTech/ET_LAB/et8.pdfStudent Opinion[edit]Although its a lab course, the lab class is held in alternation (every alternate week) with the EE11001 Tutorial 3 hour class (accounts for 40% grade of your total lab grade)-https://wiki.metakgp.org/w/EE11001:_Electrical_Technology. Although this lab course has no final practical lab test, there are certain features that make this lab a hard nut to crack as only 3-4 students per section get Ex (the number depends on your professor taking the lab). You will be guided by the TAs about the experiement, however you have to setup the entire circuit on your own (TAs and Lab assistants can only help you with some connections). You have to take the readings in the fair PT sheets on the spot and get it signed by the TA then and there. Officially, you have to get the circuit diagram signed by the TA before starting the experiment. Since the TAs check your regular practical assignment, they look for the signatures and do penalise you for their absence. However the best plan for this lab assignment is as follows: 1.Get sufficient PT sheets for all 6 assignments in the beginning of the semester from TechMarket. 2.Write the Aim, Apparatus Used (from circuit diagram), Theory (from Internet or book 1-2 pages), related circuit diagram, Observation tables (leave them blank and keep sufficient space for them),Result page (with expt data portions empty) and the discussion questions along with answers(you can get them on http://notehub.in/). No need to write procedure. http://3.Do these in your free and peace time and you will reap it's benefits very soon. 4.However bring only the circuit diagram and observation sheets of that particular day's experiment only. 5.Further details regarding format and submission will be explained by your Prof on the first lab day.Your lab professor will have no role to play in this lab except your final viva. Depending on the kind of professor you have, the pattern of the test will vary. You may have a complete oral viva or a written-cum-oral viva. And in most cases, the viva goes on for 2-3 weeks. So you might get to know some of the questions from yours friends as they might be repeated quite often. Same goes for the written. The best material to prepare for these Lab Vivas is the book Thareja. If possible read those extra portion which is not in your theory sylabus but might be asked in labs like working principle of various instruments, related calculations and some other extra stuff. But stress on the basic syllabus more strongly. For better idea do go through this page: https://wiki.metakgp.org/w/Electrical_Technology_Viva_QuestionsAs far as labs are concerned especially ManPro Lab, they are luck based and give full grades to 2–3 students per section. This is where every good student gets stuck in getting a perfect 10.PEACE
