Yes, me. She was a database administrator who could get away with ordering some of the subcontractors around because her husband was their manager. She would demand computer system configuration changes that helped her but hampered other applications and their users. I told the other subcontractors that no changes were to be made without prior discussion and my approval. She tried to get more changes made and complained to my manager that I was hampering her work. When he asked me about it, I explained the effects that her changes were causing and why I had blocked her. He told her that the systems were for numerous users and not just her and she would have to fix her application and not mess with the systems anymore. The other subcontractors thanked me.

While there are Republics all over the world, I think many of them failed to create « citizens ».A citizen is not having a citizenship of some state. « Subjects » also have that and it does not make of them citizens in a republican sense.A citizen is a member of society that permanently tries to be aware of what is going on, that thinks of the destiny of the whole nation individually and that calls out the government when it goes astray. Technically, it could also go as far as overthrowing the government violently. The Gilets jaunes even paraded with a guillotine, to remind people above that it was still in use just a few decades ago.A citizen has no automatic loyalty to the government. Loyalty is always conditional. It has to be earned by the government. The government is never due loyalty. Social stability is not paramount and it will totally be sacrificed without remorses if things don’t go like they want.Oh, so you corporation boss won’t treat us workers decently ? We’ll destroy one of your machines for each day you decided to ignore us. Oh, so you transit corporation want to take us bus drivers for a bunch of imbeciles ? We’ll paralyze all the transports of the country, and f**k you. Oh Macron, so you said you will drop that tax we found abusive? Good, we’ll keep occupying the streets to make sure you actually do it, because we will believe it when we will see it.French citizens are predators that devour the government when it goes astray. They watch. They watch mercilessly and are unforgiving. They are hyper-critical all the time. They debate all the time, even in school, even when they are kids. Being a citizen is a full-time job that requires active participation.If you don’t do any of that, you are not a citizen, you are a subject.Most people around the world are subjects, even when they live in a Republic and even when it’s not the actual term that is being used. Subjects do not have the habit of endorsing the responsabilities of a citizen, this is something they would need to learn or to learn to value.A typical attitude of subjects is to view elections in a typical capitalist fashion, like when you are looking for a corporation to perform a job, like, I don’t know, building a bridge. You get the applications of various corporations and you judge their merits and sell the contract to one of them. It’s the same with elections in capitalism : citizens do a public « appel d’offres » (call for tender ?), then they get the applications of various candidates, and pick one to do the job. AND THEY DON’T WATCH OVER HIS BACK. They expect their politician-subcontractor to do everything as they imagined, but at no moment want to get their hand dirty and start arguing the details of the policies, check if the contractant did a fraud, etc. Basically, they want a benevolent dictator, they do not want to do anything themselves and then they are surprised when they are being governed against their interests. How could you do that ! I trusted you ! Well, that’s exactly the problem : you trusted. You gave a contract to a subcontractor, never watched him, and so the subcontractor grew used to fraud you because you were too dumb to blindly trust him. In worst-case scenarios, you asked your subcontractor to not fraud while you frauded someone yourself and did not think that if everyone does that, then it goes back right at you. (Endemic corruption is a situation that happens when it’s the entire society that is corrupted and considers corruption normal. Everyone is guilty.)Citizens do not leave politicians alone, they annoy them with embarrassing questions all the time, they interfere in their job, they want to be posted about the latest developments. In such circumstances, it is terribly annoying for a technocrat. The technocrat thinks : « I am a professionnal, let me do my job, you ignorant plebs ». But citizens never « let » you do your job because they don’t trust you. You are required to justify everything and if citizens are not convinced, you are fired !Citizenship is earned by behaving like a citizen, and it is lost by failing to do so.

Douglas Prasher: a gifted scientist who could unarguably have won the Nobel Prize, ended up as a shuttle bus driver.He was the first scientist to successfully clone and sequence the genes for Green fluorescent protein (GFP) and shared his pioneering work with Martin Chalfie and Roger Y. Tsien. He was also the first to suggest that GFP could be used as a tracer for biochemical systems. Unfortunately, within a brief period, Prasher had to quit academia since he was denied further research funding, but the latter two went on to receive Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2008). Not to mention, his works led to the foundation of multi-million dollar industries.To emphasize the importance of his work, it can be said that, use of GFP as a biomarker or sensor has revolutionized the fields of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology, Medicine and several others. In layman's terms, GFP is used as a laser pointer to locate myriads of biomolecules. There is probably not a single lab working in Molecular Biology which does not use GFP.However, Prasher was probably not destined to share this glory. His fate betrayed him time and again.Following his rejection of funding application by National Institutes of Health, he was denied promotion from assistant professor to associate professor. Subsequently, he had to quit academia.He transferred to Plant Germplasm Quarantine & Biotechnology Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, but he had to leave from there since the working conditions deteriorated.He went on to work for AZ Technology - a subcontractor of NASA in Huntsville, Alabama. But after one and a half years, NASA canceled the project because of a decision to cut funding for biological research.Dejected and heartbroken, Prasher spent an year unemployed. Then he had no choice but to take up the job of a shuttle bus driver in Penney Toyota for $8.50 an hour. He even put a sticker at the back of his car saying "Scientist needs work" and wrote his phone number.Prasher was invited at the Nobel Prize ceremony by Roger Tsien, and both Chalfie and Tsien acknowledged him for his contribution. Prasher also expressed his pleasure by saying,I'm really happy for them. I was really surprised that particular topic carried that much weight.In 2012, Douglas Prasher joined the lab of Roger Tsien at University of California San Diego at his invitation.Edit: Thank you everyone for sharing your views. I am involved in active research too as a PhD student. That's why I can really imagine how much hardship Douglas Prasher had to go through. It's good though that he is at UCSD now (in the same department I am doing PhD). However, those two decades of his life that could have been his most prolific phase, can never be brought back. I wish that no bright aspiring young researcher like him should face such hardships simply because of lack of funds.
