We weren't geniuses, just persistent.We used books[1] , binders[2] , manuals, user guides[3] and made phone calls[4] .I had stuff just like in the photos below on my desk for years and years. I read them until they were dog-eared, and had stacks of them on my lap for hours at a time. I’d bring them home and read them on my couch. I read them like love letters. I used post-it notes, fingers, and a white board to organize thoughts.I wrote many thousands of lines of code on a 15″ monochrome computer terminal[5] with a line editor[6], years before IDE was an acronym or stack exchange was a thing. I also did a couple of years of keypunch[7][8] coding in college. You don’t need a lot of equipment to write code.In the 80s, we used email[9] Usenet[10] , gopher[11] and fidonet[12] . We went to the library[13] of local Universities, or book stores[14].Later on, about the time most Quorans were born, we used the internet.We used Knuth[15] and Kernighan and Ritchie[16] and Sedgwick[17][18] .We went to user group meetings[19] and had convos[20] .
