What makes kids give up on math?

They give up because too many math teachers (subconsciously) engineer math class to promote a fixed mindset (math talent is inherited, hard work doesn't pay off, if you're not born math-smart you're doomed so don't even bother).Mindset: The New Psychology of Success: Carol Dweck.Mindset Poster by Nigel Holmes:How do they do this?By calculating the final grade using an average of earlier tests--so if you start off slowly with some poor tests, you may reach a point where you have no chance of getting an A or even a B, so you give up.By counting incomplete homework against your final grade even if you demonstrated mastery on the tests.By using curves, or needlessly obscure tests, to create false, invidious distinctions between math students (pre-med, etc. to weed people out or create a class ranking).By using Grades to put an end to learning. If you give a grade on a math test (B- or 82) that is often the end of the experience for a student. The test goes in the trash, the coaching opportunity is lost, and they move on none-the-wiser.Solutions... to creating a Growth Mindset Math Class?Use a cumulative exams and continuous/spiraling review sets so every test is a final. If you get an A on the last test of the quarter, we'll drop all your earlier tests and you get an A. Congratulations, you didn't give up!Tell kids this parable to teach them that we don't care how fast you learn the math, just that you do learn it. It's a tool that gives you power: Two twins, a boy and a girl, are learning to ride their bikes. The girl gets it the first day and takes off riding. Her brother has a bad crash the first time he tries to ride, and it takes him three days to get back on track and master the bike. In a month no one remembers how long it took either child. They can ride a bike! They now have the freedom to explore the neighborhood, a greater world. That was the goal, not to learn to ride before your sibling.Use homework for what it supposed to be: a tool to create fluency and identify problem concepts so a student can get help, not a hammer to punish students for not doing your make-work. Give kids as much time as possible to finish it in school, while the teacher is there to help them.Teach kids SmartPractice techniques (as others have mentioned, Math Teachers, learn your trade! Every thing is hard by the yard, but a cinch by the inch. Break complex algorithms into simple steps and help students master them, one-by-one. Don't assume they get it just cause you do.Use Computer Software for Repetition and Fluency: in a math lab you can have every student practice at the correct level of difficulty, with instant feedback, isolation of error, thousands of reps, no fear to ask for help... and you're using paper and pencil math materials!? • Thomas Donahue's answer to What is the best math teaching software? • ... answer to What apps are good for teaching math to my 14 year old? • ... answer to What are some resources I can use to practice math?Put the math goals and the sample mastery tests up in public. Math isn't that mysterious. Criterion referenced math courses are the most ethical and effective way to get the greatest number or children to mastery--not mysterious, last minute, try to figure out what this particular teacher wants nonsense! Math teachers should aim for B- or A-level teaching: 80 - 100% of their students achieving mastery. That's not grade inflation, that's excellent coaching.Use Pass/Try Again (Achievement Based) Grading. Set mastery goals on each test and turn yourself into a math COACH. If you make each math test Pass/Try Again (minimum score 85 to pass, e.g.) then students will come to you to get help if they don't pass. See Carol Dweck TED talk below on then power of "Not Yet".Carol Dweck TED Talk: The power of believing that you can improveNote: I don't mention making math class exciting. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do that--you should-- or that boring, humorless math classes aren't part of the reason kids give up in math (beware the fallacy of the single cause!).Thomas Donahue's answer to How can I like math?... answer to I want to learn more math, especially ancient geometry, but would like to find a unique method. Can you recommend an unusual or alternative method?... answer to How come I hated maths in High School but now, studying a degree in Classics, I love them? But success is its own reward, even if you haven't got time (school pushing you to finish the book, raised math scores, etc.) your students will start to like math if they succeed at math.

In a chemistry graduate school (specifically organic), studying is 5 years. So why do people describe Med school as the longest type of schooling?

I feel qualified to answer because I have both a graduate degree in chemistry and have attended medical school. Typically, in graduate school in chemistry, one only takes courses the first year. Depending on the field of specialization in chemistry and the department, you also choose an advisor and take monthly exams that our department called cumulative exams or a comprehensive written and oral exam at the end of the year. It wasn’t at my time considered typical to take more than 4 years for a PhD. Some students finished in 3. It was frowned upon to take 5 or more. After the first year, a gradstudent usually doesn’t take courses, unless they need remediation. My field was physical chemistry which typically took longer than organic. Our department was good at spitting them out within 4 years.Med school had two preclinical years and two clinical years (24 months). A student in the independent study program could theoretically complete the two preclinical years in less time. We had a couple students who transferred from other med schools who did so, but usually med school is solid 4 years with no breaks. I won’t even comment on coursework difficult other than to say it was pass-fail and less 85% was failing. The National Board Exam was a three part exam. We took part 1 between preclinical and clinical, part 2 in order to graduate and part 3 after intern year. That’s right, you need to finish intern year before you can get a license to practice medicine at all. So, it’s a minimum of 5 years before a med student can become licensed as a physician . Then there is the2–7 years of residency, then board certification exams,Most of the licensing exams are 2 day exams. At the time I took them, they were given once or twice a year in few locations scattered around the country. Sometimes the closest location was full, and you could be assigned one that requiresd staying in a hotel out of state.Board exams are 1–2 8 hour days long. When I started out, board certification was for 7 years. About 15years ago it was changed to every 10 years for the 8 hour long test, but we have something called “maintenance of certification “, which requires a 15 hour or so activity and an online exam that once again, we need to score 85% or higher to pass.Imagine if chemistry professors or even lab chemists had to retake the pchem/physics/differential equations final with an 85% or better every 7–10 years for the rest of their life. I think I had classmates who didn’t do that the first time around!
