What does the Chinese English accent sound like?

Here I'm going to talk about Mandarin speakers (supposing s/he speaks unaccented Mandarin) who has an accent when reading, I'm not accented so I'm going to call them "they". And by Chinese I mean Mandarin.1. ConsonantsChinese doesn't have /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /tr/, /dr/, /dz/.They don't know the different between /v/ and /w/, therefore they pronounce "survive" /səˈwaɪw/. Of course, they don't distinguish between "west" and "vest"./θ/ and /ð/ are pronounced /s/ and /z/ respectively. So "the" will sound like /zə/. Few people can pronounce these two well. They don't distinguish between /ʒ/, /dʒ/ and /dr/ (see below)./ʃ/ and /ʒ/ (or /dʒ/ or /dr/, since they don't distinguish between the three) are pronounced like x and j in pinyin (or in IPA /x/ and /t͡ɕ/) respectively./tʃ/ is pronounced like q in pinyin (or in IPA /t͡ɕʰ/).They don't distinguish between /z/ and /dz/ so they're both pronounced /z/.Few people have trouble with /tr/.Technically speaking, the b, d, g, z in Chinese aren't the same as those of English. But no one distinguish between them (as they're unaspirated and voiceless, whereas those of English are unaspirated and voiced). I myself have trouble with this (in French) so I won't talk about that. Also, Chinese only has /ŋ/ as a final. So "sinner", "thinner", "singer" sounds exactly the same to them!Plus, they often add a vowel after many final consonants. So:There is an /ə/ after /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/.There is an /ʊ/ after /f/, /v/, /m/.There is an /ɯ/ or /ɨ/ after /s/, /z/, /θ/, /ð/, /ts/, /dz/.There is an /y/ (or pinyin ü) after /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/."The" is always pronounced /ðə/ regardless of its following sound.2. Single VowelsChinese doesn't have /ɪ/, /æ/.In Chinese, the i is pronounced like a long "ee" so they pronounce the short i (i.e. /ɪ/) just a shortened "ee", which is obviously incorrect. (In fact, most people don't distinguish between long and short vowels.)Few people have trouble with /æ/, though they don't distinguish between /e/ and /æ/ (which doesn't seem to be a great problem, since that happens for many native speakers too). Also, Chinese u is "rounder" than that of English.3. DiphthongsChinese doesn't have /ɔɪ/, /ɪə/, /əʊ/, /eə/, /ʊə/.Few people have problem with /ɔɪ/, /ʊə/ and /ɪə/.The Chinese ou is pronounced /oʊ/ instead of /əʊ/. I haven't seen anyone who can correctly pronounce this.Speaking of /eə/, I'll add something else. Chinese people learn British English in primary school, American English in junior high, and again British English in senior high. Teachers and students speak a mix of the American English and British English. (What's funny is that whereas British English is used in textbooks in senior high, American English is tested!) There's hardly anyone who can distinguish between these two accents. Now for /eə/ many people say /er/. This should be fine, but...They don't distinguish between /el/, /eə/ (or /er/) and /eil/! That is, these pairs of words sound exactly the same for them:fell - fair - failpell - pear - palebell - bearOf the three, they usually choose /el/ (as in "fell").4. The Whole SentencesRemember that in Chinese no liaison takes place. They would read word by word (with extra vowels attached to consonantal finals). See some examples (supposing s/he has no problem with consonants or vowels, just focus on liaison):I can't even imagine it.(correct) /aɪ-ka:n-tɪ-v(ə)-nɪ-mæ-dʒɪ-nɪ(t)/(Chinese) /aɪ-ka:n-tə-ɪ-v(ə)n-ɪ-mæ-dʒɪn-ɪ-tə/Yeah, phrases like "in it" is pronounced in-it instead of i-nit.5. More examples (supposing s/he has problems with consonants or vowels, and "full" liaison, including some changes that I haven't inroduced, no reduction, no stress markings)Accents. What does the Chinese English accent sound like?(correct) /æk-s(ə)nts-wɒ(t)-dʌz-ðə-tʃaɪ-ni:-zɪŋ-glɪ-ʃæk-s(ə)n-tsaʊn(d)-laɪk/(Chinese) /ækə-sən-tsɯ-wɒ-tə-dʌ-zɯ-zə-traɪ-ni:-zɯ-i:ŋ-gə-li:-xy-ækə-sən-tə-saŋ-də-lai:-kə//tʃ/ is pronounced /tr/ as in "Chinese". /aʊn/ becomes /aŋ/.The following table shows typical examples of the occurrence of the above consonant phonemes in words.(correct) /ðə-fɒ-ləʊ-ɪŋ-teɪ-b(ə)l-ʃəʊz-tɪ-pɪ-k(ə)-lɪg-zɑ:m-p(ə)l-zə(v)-ðɪ-ə-kʌ-rən-sə(v)-ðɪ-ə-bʌv-kɒn-sə-nənt-fəʊ-ni:m-zɪ-nwɜ:dz/(Chinese) /zə-fɒ-loʊ-i:ŋ-teɪ-bl-xoʊ-sɯ-ti:-pi:-kl-i:-gə-zæ:-mʊ-pls-ɒf-zə-ə-kʌ-rən-sɯ-ɒf-zə-ə-bʌw-kɒn-sə-nən-tə-foʊ-ni:-mʊ-sɯ-i:n-wɜ:-dzɯ/The ending s in "shows" is pronounced /s/ rather than /z/. People read example as /ɪgzæ:mpl/ (yeah that's a long æ) and still think they're pronouncing in the British accent. I've never seen anyone who insist that s/he speak the British English that actually can pronounce it correctly.6. Something More...Note that all these are based on the assumption that the person knows the correct pronunciation of the words. If they don't, I can't predict how they speak.I sincerely hope someone can come to correct my mistakes (especially on the IPA part, I'm not expert on that). Thanks!

How do we study English effectively?

Many people in my acquaintance have asked me to suggest some ways of improving their English proficiency. While giving presentations or speeches, I generally stop when the moderators start getting all quirky and make ungraceful hieroglyphs all to remind me that I’ve far crossed the time limit. I don’t know why they do it even when the audience is not making any fuss and of course not sleeping. Well…I’ve seen numerous individuals trying to learn English. They sail, they flounder, some succeed and some capsize. There are many different books claiming to teach you English. They aren’t half bad. How then do we explain the fact that many of these enthusiastic personalities speak “properly” like “po-op-early” which seems somewhat funny and at times deplorable? In my school days we always had a subject called “English” which was divided further into “Grammar” and “Literature”. Looking back, it is hilarious how people manage to separate a battery from a cellphone and still aspire to make a call. I didn’t know what a clause is, was perplexed by gerunds and was disgusted by auxiliaries. Even so my literature answers were read out loud to the entire class and highly applauded. I’ve talked to many English speaking natives and showed them a few of my articles, but they couldn’t point out any natural grammatical errors, even when asked. This could be one of the beauties of this language. The point is that if you want to trim a “bushy bush”, you won’t cut it by an iterative measure of the standing length. You’ll simply mow it down, so it “appears” to be uniform. Though, I’m not a linguist, I can firmly say that English is the most haphazard language I’ve come across. However, the contradiction arises when the learners try to learn it in a way which is far more organized than the language deserves. This is why everything is ruined when you constrict the flow and correlate it with corresponding situations where you’re waiting for your brain to tell you whether “-ing” is to be added or the verb has to be “-ed”ded.“Umu…What was the rule number 13 for such verbs…”.This is also the reason why most of the speakers non-native to this language generate unnecessary stammer and lose confidence while speaking English.I do not remember how I learned the English language, maybe it’s a gift from my parents who chose the best available “statically” modern schooling for me where I was exposed to English notices, English hop races, English speaking, English books, English beetles, “Ee-nglish” knowing people, English “Oops” and “ouches”. Like, I was so bored that for my senior secondary I transferred to a school with similar academic prowess but a negligible English endorsing environment. So, I must say that for starters you might want to have an English environment around you with English “Ouches” and “Oops”, of course. And aah, how could I forget “Esq-use me” slowly becoming “squeeze-me”, much popular where I live.I also believe that reading novels are an essential part of the learning process. This is said considering the validity of the fact that states that most people enjoy reading works of fiction. One can read anything likable. Reading books turned upside down also helps(and this never ceases to baffle me) probably because it increases your reading speed when you come back to normal, and thus the concentration to learn new things. I’ve also seen grownup men reading articles with a dictionary by their side. But you know, I can look up any “abracadabra” word and include it in my writings to make them fancier; still what remains of significance is to understand the sense conveyed by the author in its pristine form. The mistake that most learners might commit is that they try to “study” English, just like a scientific text. They make notes, learn rules, and form sentences like machines designated for production lines. Discrete, grammatically perfect, perfect to the degree of perfection, and precise sentences lacking any sense of pulchritude or ingenuity. That isn’t the way languages ought to be used, is it? Language was invented to help us communicate. Until the time a sentence retains the meaning it intends to pass, it’s absolutely fine until it is possessed by a really poor grammatical core. The thing required the most is missed by most. It is “imagination”. Even self proclaimed experts sometimes struggle to convey a word they could have easily done in their own native language. After saying every few sentences in your native language, imagine how would they or their variations sound or look like in the English language and how would you say something else, related to those sentences. You’’ll probably face difficulties which will expose the grey areas and manifest themselves as opportunities of learning something new. Non-native speakers don’t need to anglicize themselves to learn English. It’s just a psychological hegemony granted at no cost from who-knows-where and who-knows-who.English is pretty weak, you know. It will submit to you in a very short time once you recognize it as a mere something made up of 26 alphabets and scattered punctuation marks(which are on the verge of extinction as the texting era progresses).“Hah! Such a measly ______ challenging me? Me who hosts more than 37 trillion cells all of which are fully coordinated? Don’t make me laugh”, might be one of your push-forward slogans,or“Rest in Peace, dear English. For it’s a carnage party of the demons. And, it is only me who can protect you.”.It’ll probably get scared and stick to you for the years ahead.

No stars! I wanted to chose no stars but it was not an option.. I have been working weeks, trying to figure out, communicate with company etc. on how to make this program work.. I asked for a refund days after downloading because it was not working and I thought it was me, and this program is just not for me... weeks into still trying and I realize its this program! I even updated.. why and update so soon IDK, I thought it would help.. After organizing and personalizing my slideshow in basic format (so that I could manage) I was able to sort my photos and music as I liked. I then went to "Create" and tried to burn onto DVD.. it does not carry on my personalized music and only 5 minutes of my photos.. no whys or how to no help from company.. I always told myself to never download program.. should have listened to myself!
