★★★★I will write in brief:Learning Curve: Steep. It combines the concepts of system programming languages like C, with high level languages like Scala and Haskell. So whichever side you come from, it takes time.Complexity: On the higher side. You have static typing, several types of pointers, pattern matching (better version of switch case), templates, two types of strings, three types of arrays, not-so-plain enum types (tagged unions) etc.But really smart type inference (which can infer types not just on the basis of declaration, but also based on how the variable is used after declaration), smart pattern matching, simple user defined types etc make it much less verbose than Java.Productivity: this has to be considered at multiple levelsA. Writing Code: On the lower side. Yes, despite all cool stuff like pattern matching, closures, automatic memory management, speed of writing code would not be as high as python. This is because you will spend the highest amount of time getting your program to compile (compared to other languages). Compiler features like automatic lifetime and ownership checking will not let you write (I mean compile) code that will give you run time surprises.B. Testing: High. Built in support for testing saves you time and brings consistency.C. Maintenance: Very High! What are the issues the crop up once the code is shipped? invalid index, dangling pointer, memory corruption, resource leak. Rust eliminates almost all of these, and more. So in most cases the bugs you would need to fix would be related to actual business logic.Speed: Very High. Goal of Rust is to be as fast as C++. While not quite there yet, it is now faster than C++ in many benchmarks: Rust vs C++ g++ - Which programs are fastest?Build system: Good. Cargo does a good job of building.Community: Small but good. Being a very new language, the community is small (but very helpful!). No books written yet. Very few libraries available. Qualify for the challenge: CollaborateMany Business games start with an online challenge in order to limit the amount of participants. Only the 20 to 30% of the students will qualify. Nothing prevents you from teaming up with other candidates or team to compare your answers and challenge them collectively. Another important point to take into consideration are the qualification quotas of the games. If many participants are coming from your school or country, be prepared for a huge competition and differentiate yourself.Enjoy the moment : Take pleasureIf you are stressed, tired and too ambitious, you will shortly lose your mind under the intense pressure and have a negative impact on your group or team. But how do you enjoy a business game? Take breaks when needed, don’t hesitate to engage with other participants as much as possible, laugh, rest during the night. From the moment you are not in a challenge, you’d better enjoy these moments and take full advantage of it (do not try to overwork…)Make new friends: Get to know deeply your teammatesAs mentioned by former winner Denisty at Solvay Business Game 2016 during his “advice” speech, getting to know your teammates is key. Don’t limit yourself to your “professional” skills. Speak about your passions, your weaknesses, your strengths and build a consensus on the different roles based on these strengths. You surely want the best designer to take care of the slides! Only a few participants have a passion for Net Present Value or Marketing strategy building. But you experience (Analysis grid, theoretical fundamentals such as a SWOT, etc…) has always to be put at good use. Your passions are always easier to communicate and bring enthusiasm to your performance.Prepare presentation templatesFor many challenges, you’ll have to perform oral presentations: be ready with some beautiful lean templates. A good start would be a structure such as: Problem statement – Solution – Strategy. It is up to you to broaden your preparation. I would recommend you to use only keywords and visuals, as the projecting material is not so efficient and slides are not printed and handed out.Go the extra mile by being creativeThere are high stakes that the individuals that are going to judge you will screen more than 20 groups. You will keep their attention by being professional but you will distinct yourself from the crowd by being “outside of the box”, by being able to pull the right emotional strings that will make you worth remembering. Creativity is my personal favorite to do so.Focus AND rest (allow yourself to breath, take breaks, eat, sleep, party)Business cases are long and stressful, sometimes during more than 48 hours. Be gentle with your body and your mind.You don’t want to winI do believe that many of the participants that come with the aim of winning a business case competition won’t even make it close to winning. Also, it is the best way to have a bad experience, because there is only one team winning and surely many experienced competitors. My advice would be to focus on actively learning (take notes, synthesize, write a blog post or an answer on Quora about your experience).
