PDF Editor FAQ

Multiple MAGA protesters chanted ‘destroy the GOP’ at the pro-Trump "Freedom" rally in DC on Saturday. Are they serious?

I’ve spoken with many Trump supporters, and there were several factors that were different, but one common trait that was shared by practically all of them.A complete and utter distrust of the government. To them, the problem was “career politicians” who were only looking out for themselves and not the people, which… yeah, I get that. Not sure why they decided they’d instead put their faith in the one guy even less trustworthy than a politician, but whatever.Anyway, this distrust in government does not exempt Republicans. Many of them had little faith in them and only tolerated them if they went along with them on the Trump bandwagon. Those who refused to join were shunned, along with those who did not properly demonstrate their faith. And now, as they believe that the election was rigged, and yet the GOP does nothing (due to lack of factual evidence), the conclusion they reach is that the republican lawmakers are either cowards or part of the conspiracy.

Back then, what did you think of the Jimmy Carter "malaise" speech, and what do you think about it now?

At the time, I thought it was weak and uninspiring, and revealed a leader that did not know how to lead.Today I think it’s possibly the most honest speech made by a U.S. president since Lincoln’s second inaugural address. Here are key excerpts from the 1979 address:All the legislation in the world can’t fix what’s wrong with America. So, I want to speak to you first tonight about a subject even more serious than energy or inflation. I want to talk to you right now about a fundamental threat to American democracy. In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities, and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption. Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns. We’ve discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning. We’ve learned that piling up material goods cannot fill the emptiness of lives which have no confidence or purpose. The symptoms of this crisis of the American spirit are all around us. The willingness of Americans to save for the future has fallen below that of all other people in the Western world. There is a growing disrespect for government and for churches and for schools, the news media, and other institutions. These changes did not happen overnight. They’ve come upon us gradually over the last generation, years that were filled with shocks and tragedy. These wounds are still very deep. They have never been healed. We are at a turning point in our history. There are two paths to choose. One is a path I’ve warned about tonight, the path that leads to fragmentation and self-interest. Down that road lies a mistaken idea of freedom, the right to grasp for ourselves some advantage over others. That path would be one of constant conflict between narrow interests ending in chaos and immobility. It is a certain route to failure. All the traditions of our past, all the lessons of our heritage, all the promises of our future point to another path -- the path of common purpose and the restoration of American values.I will do my best, but I will not do it alone. Let your voice be heard. Whenever you have a chance, say something good about our country. With God’s help and for the sake of our nation, it is time for us to join hands in America. Working together with our common faith we cannot fail.More prescient words have rarely been spoken. Unfortunately, America did not listen. It ridiculed Carter — and chose the other path.

How do Northern Irish Protestants view Republic of Ireland Protestants?

As a Northern Irish Protestant I view them pretty much the same way as I view anyone from the Republic of Ireland. Similar to brothers - get on well with them, will stick with them against most other nations but love getting one over them, especially in sport. For me personally, it’s not such a big deal whether someone is a Protestant or Catholic (or whatever) in the Republic of Ireland or in mainland Britain where I now live. Maybe I have more in common faith-wise if you’re a Protestant but it’s not that big a deal what flavour of Christianity you practise. I’ll admit in Northern Ireland someone’s “culture” is something that does stand out a bit more but it is more or less irrelevant anywhere else.Boring answer but true!
