I didn't receive ANY child support until after my youngest child turned 18. Then, over time, I received over three time the original amount ordered, due to the compound interest accumulated over fifteen years. It's really a shame, that my ex chose to spend more money fighting payment of child support than he actually paid.I stopped actively pursuing payment for several years, until my youngest was approaching sixteen. I called my ex, explaining that he hadn't seen his son in around ten years, yet, should anything happen to me, he would be my son's guardian (my youngest has Downs). I suggested my son visit him in Florida, during Christmas or summer break. He was adamant that this was impossible. I then explained that our son attended school and summer school, but still had several weeks off during which he required supervision or activities, and requested he contribute financially for Adam to attend a summer camp. Again, he insisted he was unable to contribute towards the $600 cost. I offered him the option of making monthly payments of $50. No, he couldn't afford that. I then offered him the option of paying $12.50/week. Nope, he still couldn't afford it. This made me MAD!At this time, my ex smoked, was married to a woman who never worked, and had a German shepherd which probably ate $12.50 worth of food per week, but he couldn't contribute this measly amount towards his son.So, I'm forewarning everyone, it's not a good idea to invoke my anger. Not only did I pursue him for the arrearages, I successfully pursued payment for additional child support after my son became a legal adult and eligible for SSDI, Pro Se, AND in an unusual motion, since Pro Se litigants are never allowed to pursue attorney fees, I successfully argued a motion to be awarded an additional $1500 in expenses due to his prolonged refusal to pay and the excessive number of court appearances I was required to attend over fifteen years.

There seems to be the widespread assumption that you owe child support to the other parent.You don’t.You owe it to the child. The other parent is “just” the legal guardian, fiscally responsible for the child and thus the receiver of those benefits.The other party can opt out however much they want, it doesn’t mean squat - because the child is legally entitled to those payments.
