PDF Editor FAQ

Doctors, what is something a patient didn’t mention that turned out to be important?

I’m going anonymous for this one.I’m not a doctor and this is a bit of a different scenario as it was regarding a surgeon. My husband works on a cruise ship and I travel with him as his wife on board. The ship was anchored off Hamilton Island. Guests, some staff and I had the opportunity to go swimming and snorkelling from a pontoon somewhere in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef a few kilometres away from the ship.I decided to do a taster scuba dive with a dive master, having a lovely time and enjoying myself.Suddenly the dive master let me go and swam away at speed. He was immediately replaced by the under water photographer (on a taster scuba dive the instructor is not allowed to leave you alone let alone let go of you). Later on, when I surfaced, I found out what had happened. The surgeon (a certified open water diver) had gone through the briefing and pre-dive paperwork. In the dive medical questionnaire he gave false answers and false declaration that he was healthy. The result nearly cost him his life.He got into difficulties during a scuba dive and had to surface in a hurry. My dive master had seen what had been happening and had gone to his aid.If he had mentioned his condition and the meds he was on, in the medical questionnaire, he would not have been allowed to dive. How do I know the chap was a surgeon? He was a guest on the cruise ship.

How risky is scuba diving for someone who has asthma?

Asthma isn't a black/white issue. The disorder itself can have different causes - including allergies, exercise, and stress - and varied severity of symptoms, which may go away on their own in time or may require pharmaceutical intervention. For my own part, I really was not aware of how prevalent asthma is amongst the general population until I became trained as a scuba instructor and had to make risk assessment decisions based on a self-declaration medical questionnaires. When assessing medical fitness to dive responsible parties must take into account a) how likely something is to happen and b) how severe the consequences will be if it does. It helps to understand the nature of the problem, which is two-fold:Someone suffering an asthma attack under the water will have trouble breathing (of course!) and due to the nature of the activity will be less able to administer treatment - i.e. you can't puff on a bronchodilator under the water with a regulator in your mouth. One can't breathe inDue to the effects of Boyle's Law, once underwater and returning to the surface, air trapped in the lungs (which it is - bronchioles contracted == trouble inhaling AND exhaling) may cause some form of lung over-expansion injury. One can't breathe outSo, essentially - you might not be able to breathe in and your lungs might pop on the way up because you can't breathe out either.Going back to the causal factors: allergies, exercise, stress:Highly-filtered compressed air comes out cold and dry, where you dive it is likely to be hot and humid.Scuba diving involves bursts of intense exercise (donning wetsuit, gearing up, swimming to downline)First experiences of learning to dive can be extremely stressfulAnswer: Pretty Risky. If you have asthma you must seek out professional advice from a Diving Physician (speak to DAN - the Divers Alert Network) - most doctors that don't dive don't know anything about the sport or hyperbaric medicine (and in my experience are not open to reading the literature they are sent in order to make an informed decision and are extremely blaze about telling people; "You'll be fine" and signing them off). I have been in many many uncomfortable situations where someone who clearly should not be allowed to dive has got "medical approval". Suffice to say: not on my watch.

What do I need to know as a beginner scuba diver?

The first thing you need to know is that you are medically fit as per the medical questionnaire you will need to fill out before engaging in any scuba diving activities. The PADI teaching system is performance based and the entry level Open Water course is structured in a way that is progressive and in 3 parts. Knowledge Development, Confined Water training (Pool, ideally), Open Water training dives x 4.The knowledge development is classroom based with videos and review based questions, with quizzes and a final exam all facilitated by an Instructor. You will then progress to equipment familiarisation and set ups, followed by skill training in confined water with an instructor.Once you have demonstrated competency (mastery) with the pool skills, you then move onto the Open Water training dives phase. Its important to know that as well as passing the exam, you will need to demonstrate mastery of the practical skills demonstrated to you in order to gain your certification.
