What do you think about the fire at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris?

Frankly, I weep more for media hysteria that developed, than for actual damage done to this world heritage. I can understand many people got emotional when they saw the venerable church a blaze, and were affraid that the worst would come to pass. I myself remained blissfully unaware of the disaster as it was unfolding (as it’s usually the case with me), only to read about it the next morning, when the colleague at work informed me. But even a cursory search on google images quickly revealed that, all things considered, Notre-Dame was fine. Parts that burned down were the roof and the central spire added in 19th century. The actual Gothic architecture beneath them, together with almost all of its medieval inventory, remained mostly unharmed. Here, from the corresponding wiki page:Some paintings appear to have been damaged by smoke but not by fire. These paintings are expected to be transported to the Louvre for restoration work.Stone, copper, and bronze statues, including statues of the twelve Apostles that surrounded the base of the spire, had been removed from the site as part of the renovations; work on the statues was finished on 11 April, and the rooster reliquary atop the spire was due to be removed within weeks. The reliquary was believed to have been lost when the spire fell, but it was found among the debris the day after, damaged but not destroyed.Other than the statues, which had been removed from the spire for renovations four days before the fire, the first artefacts to be confirmed as rescued from the blaze – shortly before midnight on the night of the fire – were the crown of thorns and the Tunic of St. Louis. Some lead holding stained glass windows together melted in the heat of the fire. The day after the fire, a spokesperson for the cathedral reported that the three major rose windows, dating to the 12th and 13th centuries, had not been damaged. However, the cathedral's rector later indicated that one of the rose windows may have become unstable and may have to be dismantled for safekeeping. Damage to the cathedral's stained glass appeared restricted to 19th-century windows, which are of much less historical value.According to Laurent Prades, steward of the cathedral's interior patrimony, the two pipe organs were not significantly damaged … The cathedral bells that hung in the towers during the fire have mostly been preserved, including the bourdon. The liturgical treasury of the cathedral and the "grands Mays" monumental tablets were evacuated during the fire. The main structural damage, as seen above, is the collapse of vaults in several spots: along the central nave, above the crossing, and at the northern end of transept (not visible in the photo). But that’s hardly unrepairable, and I get a feeling that most people crying “Oh, but it’ll never be the same again!” couldn’t tell authentic Gothic architecture from a McDonald’s restaurant. In fact, I think we should all stop and think for a moment just how well this ancien Dame was built. Its medieval stone structure withstood the entire weight of the burning roof (+ 19th century molten lead plating), it held fast without any serious damage, and shielded its interior from almost all harm. That’s what should be making the news: the laudations of medieval builders, whose designs in retrospect seem to have been made particularly resistant to fire damage; and not histrionic platitudes about death of civilization or unrecoverable destruction. The way many of the media pundits and politicians talk about it, you’d think they’re almost disappointed that Notre Dame didn’t all crumble to ashes, and that no greater scandal could be made from this misfortune. And a temple is comprised of stones. One stone crumbles and another takes its place. And the temple holds its form, for 1,000 years or more.Tywin Lannister

Why aren't there as many black scientists?

This is Lee Lorch. He’s the guy who taught me first year calculusHe got his PhD in mathematics at the University of Cincinnati in 1941. After serving in the U.S. Army, he got a job at City College of New York.He was fired for his work in the civil rights movement. He joined that when he learned that blacks weren’t allowed in his housing development.Undeterred, he found a job at Fisk College, a historically black college in Tennessee. The year after he started, he went to a mathematics conference in Nashville, where he found that black mathematicians weren’t allowed to attend because the facility was “whites only”.A few years later, he was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee where he refused to answer questions about his political activity prior to 1941. Fisk fired him.He moved to another all black college, Philander Smith in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had to resign after getting involved shielding black high school students who were trying to attend the all-white high school. Then he smartened up and moved to Canada where he worked at the University of Alberta for nine uneventful years before moving to York University in 1968, where he remained until his death in 2014.On the way, he trained 3 of the first 20 black women every to get a Ph.D. in mathematics in the United States, and the first three black men to get doctorates in mathematics in the United States. Before that, there weren’t any black Ph.D’s.Now, if you think things were tough for him just because he helped black people, imagine what things would be for someone who actually was a black person.Lorch with Etta Falconer, the fifth black woman to get a Ph.D. in mathematics. Lorch was her supervisor.

What are some beautiful images of death (as a concept or idea)?

This answer may contain sensitive images. Click on an image to unblur it.This Photo Of Two Engineers Hugging Atop A Burning TurbineA crew of four was conducting routine maintenance to the 67 meterhigh turbine. They were in a gondola next to the turbine when a firebroke out. The fire quickly engulfed the only escape route (the stairsin the shaft), trapping two of the maintenance crew on top of theturbine. This photograph tugs at your heartstrings. Two engineers hug and cling to each other as fire and smoke creeps toward them. What happened? One of them jumped down and was found dead in a field next to theturbine. The other victim was found by a special firefighter team thatascended the turbine when the fire died down a bit. The cause of thefire is unknown, but is believed to be a short circuit. What makes this more heartbreaking is that the two engineers are just aged 19 and 21.Edit :It is not exactly beautiful per say but I really found myself empathizing with this image , this made me realize the dangers that wind mill engineers face that I knew nothing about, so I wanted to bring this to the attention of people. None of us realize that things like electricity that we take for granted all the time , has been made available to us because of the efforts of these brave people that regularly put their life in peril. Hats off to them. Some additional information :This incident happened in Ooltgensplaat, Netherlands on 29th October 2013.Their safety gear (repelling equipment) was on the other side of the room when the fire started and they weren't able to get to it.Firefighters are fairly powerless to do anything to fight fires on wind turbines, and due to high costs maintenance crews have limited means and training to escape an emergency situation. Thanks Tirthankar Dam , Lushabh Saxena , Manoj Patankar , Sumit Verma (सुमित वर्मा), Dinesh Babu for promoting my answer.
