PDF Editor FAQ

What is the meaning of fleet owner?

“Fleet Owner”, meaning they have a “fleet” of vehicles leased on to various carriersFleet vehicles are groups of motor vehicles owned or leased by a business, government agency or other organization rather than by an individual or family.

How many cars does Hertz own? Interested in its US and Global fleets. Also, what do they do with the cars when they reach the end of their (short) rental life?

The Hertz fleet consists of a wide majority of vehicle manufacturers, with the majority being GM products. Luxury cars are provided by Mercedes, Infiniti, and Cadillac. Previously, due to Hertz's affiliation with Ford, the rental fleet of most locations consisted of Ford and its brands, such as Mazda, Volvo, Mercury and Lincoln, along with various others (mostly Korean and Japanese). In 2012 (the latest year that data is available for), Hertz had approximately 366,000 cars in service in the U.S. as estimated by Auto Rental News across it's 2,700 locations. Keep in mind that this data includes Advantage Rent-A-Car which was a part of Hertz until earlier this year when Hertz had to sell them off in order to acquire Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group which itself had approximately 122,000 cars in the U.S. on 2012.Data is not available for non-U.S. locations. Many of these international locations are franchises which are independently owned. The short answer to what they do with the cars at the end of their rental life is that they are either sold or returned to the manufacturer. Car rental companies operate by purchasing or leasing a number of fleet vehicles and renting them to their customers for a fee. Rental fleets can be structured in several ways – they can be owned outright (these are known as ‘risk vehicles’ because the car rental operator is taking a risk on how much the vehicle will be sold for when it is removed from service), they can be leased, or they can be owned under a guaranteed buy-back program arranged directly through a manufacturer or manufacturer’s financial arm (these are known as ‘repurchase vehicles’ because the manufacturer outlines the exact price of original sale and of repurchase at the end of a defined term).

Now that Land Rover Defender production has ended, what will be the British army's replacement?

The Defender is classified as a Light Utility Vehicle or GS (General Service) and as such, there is no "direct replacement".The defender has been shoe-horned into many roles, from the general run around canvas backed 90's used around camp, to Ambulances, recce, Snatch, WIMIK and a multitude of other variants. For general duties, the army is going "white fleet". In other words, it is using leased, non-military vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Warrior, Ford Rangers and even crew buses. In the long run, this is a far cheaper option. They don't need vast warehouses full of spares etc. The vehicles arrive, are used, and returned after a set period of time. they are not painted in olive drab :)For "protected patrol vehicles" which would have been the Snatch and a few other variants, we now have Husky, Mastiff, Panther, Wolfhound, Ridgeback and a few Defender 110 RWIMIKs and Landrover "Battlefield" ambulances. We also have the Jackal 2 and Coyote as Recce vehicles.Of the above vehicles (excluding the Defender based RWMIK and Ambulance), the Panther is "closest" to a defender 110. trouble is, it is longer (over a meter), wider (20cm) and heavier (over 1700kg more) with a lower top speed. (Who would have thought anything was slower than a Defender). Strangely, it also only carries a driver plus 3 troops. This is due to it having "proper" seats rather than bench seats. It is, however, designated as a Command and Liaison Vehicle, so not really for general use.In its favour, it does have a higher Gross weight, 6500kg V's 3000kg of the 110.Unfortunately, the weight is a disadvantage and it's offroad capability is not a patch on the Defender. I seem to recall it was not available as a 4x4 variant.I have no idea what the RAF and RN plan to do, but you do see lots of white fleet vehicles around. So, in direct answer to your question, the Defender will be replaced by a large number of vehicles, some leased, some bought, with a complex chain of supply for spares, servicing and general maintenance, some costing considerably more than a Defender, some being leased.Landrover have said the Defender replacement (D100) will NOT come as a military variant. It appears Landrover have washed their hands of their huge military market in preference to people needing to park on the grass when they go shopping. The end of an era.
