How does one go about getting representation for one's feet? I have rather, well, perfect feet but I don't know where to go from here.

If you mean you’d like to be a foot model, what you need to do is contact various agents that represent models. Send in your portfolio to garner interviews with said modelling agents, and they will tell you if you really have something special as regards your feet. If you do, they’ll take it from there. If you do not, don’t be too offended — their standards of “perfection” are difficult for most people to live up to. Nevertheless, don’t accept the first rejection. And apply to multiple agencies — when you are new, it pays to diversify. Don’t neglect to keep an eye on open audition notices for modelling gigs, either. You’ll have to be tenacious. Some agencies you contact won’t be taking on new models, you’ll probably have to travel to most of them on your own dime if you don’t live in a big(more)

What are the things to consider when starting a new pageant system?

First, let’s look at the major elements of nearly any pageant system.Notice that I said ‘nearly.’ This is because no two pageant systems are the same.Getting StartedCongratulations on deciding to start a new pageant system. There are many reasons to begin a new system versus becoming involved in an existing system. By becoming an all new director in the industry, you have a unique opportunity to write your own story, but you will need to create your own identity.NamingThat said, the first job of any new director is to name the system. When you have a name, it is then and only then that you can begin to lay the ground work with a logo image, contract/documentation and a plan of action.LogoYour logo coincide with your name of your new pageant system. This should be made available to your printer. This could be created by you or you could assign it out to a graphic designer. The logo should be able to be enlarged without the image getting blurred. In the real world…I have designed several logos for all type of competitions. It is always a good idea to be a ‘stand out’ with your logo - simple, yet elegant always WINS!Contract/DocumentationThe contract is the document sent to all prospective contestants. It should give all the rules, such as the rules for conduct, preparation guidelines, non-compete clause and more.Plan of ActionPart of your plan of action or roadmap might include applying for 501c3 status. That is, if you will be a non-profit entity, this may be the route to go. It is good to know what type of business you will become so that others see you as a leader in terms of business and skills. Any good leader lays out clearly how he or she wants to be viewed by their peers.Have you made a ‘name’ for yourself and your system?ClassificationsIn terms of what I will refer to as classifications, there are tons of details in this category. Let’s first look at the titles.TitlesYou must determine how many title you want to give out to the earning recipients. For example, if you have three main categories, then the titles might look something like this:1. Mrs. American Way2. Mrs. – First Runner Up3. Mrs. – Second Runner Up4. Ms. American WayMUST DEFINE QUALIFICATIONS…do you accept those that are divorced, single and is there an age cap?5. Ms. – First Runner Up6. Ms. – Second Runner Up7. Ms. Teen American Way8. Ms. Teen – First Runner Up9. Ms. Teen – Second Runner UpAdditional Named TitlesIn addition to the categories/divisions and titles, the director might also decide to give away additional titles. These titles may or may not include the following choices:1. Director’s Choice2. People’s Choice3. Volunteerism4. Sprit of Pageantry, and morePersonalized AwardsFor each of the titles in each of the divisions, it is crucial to have the appropriate rewards. For instance, the title-worthy awards might include any one or more of the following options:1. Trophy – personalized with the title2. Crown and sash3. Plaque4. Flowers – freshly-cut5. Nice pageant pin or jewelry6. Modeling Contract7. Makeup8. Vacation9. Entry paid to the next level (e.g., if the contestant won the title or crown at the city lev, then their entry to the Tate competition might be paid by the system)10. Photography sessions with a renowned photographer11. Other prizes that you have solicited from local business ownersRoundsAn additional classification would be to decide on which rounds you system will include. Each round needs to be clearly defined with all the right requirements. Here are a few examples of rounds that I have seen based on my own experiences:1. Fashion – Pretty in Pink, 50s and 60s2. Bikini or Swimsuit3. Athletic Attire4. Off-Stage Interview5. On-Stage Interview6. Introductions7. Formal Gown8. Headshot9. Community Service Judgement or WeightingAfter you have selected your rounds for your pageant system, be sure to stick with these rounds – at least until the next season. Never, NEVER…change the rules of the game mid-season. If you change the rules of the game in the middle of the season, you will be sure to make a name for you as a director, but it will not come with a very good reputation. Each round needs to have rules. For instance, will you set parameters around how long the gowns must be for the formal round? Will you need to determine which age groups, if any, will need to wear a wrap around their waist during the swimsuit round? Several existing systems are moving away from the swimsuit round. It is your pageant system, you make the rules.ExpensesStarting any type of business takes both time and money. Sometimes there are seemingly hidden expenses involved in the process. Oftentimes these things will almost sneak up on you. Here are some factors to research for your new system…1. Where will the pageant be held every year?2. Will it always be in the same venue?3. Do you need to rent or lease multiple rooms for dressing as well as the main stage or ballroom?4. What services are included in the facility?5. Will you need to hire a photographer or videographer for Pageant Day?6. Will this photographer person or team be needed for multiple days or an entire weekend?7. You will have internet-related expenses too. This could include paying for the domain name and website. Will you be designing your own website?8. Will you need someone to do your taxes for you annually?9. Will your Pageant Day or weekend include food that s brought in or catered?10. Which vendor will you use for your awards?11. Will you qualify for volume discounts when purchasing awards?12. Will you purchase awards for several years together or only the current year?13. Will you need to pay for media ad space – wither locally or online?14. How will you fund any scholarships, if applicable?15. How will you track website analytics?Remember that TIME IS MONEY!Social Media (Online Presence)When you have established how your pageant will be run from a day-to-day operation (and even if you are still trying to figure things out), I would recommend creating an account with every type of social media. For instance, on Facebook, this would mean that you would create a business profile. You wan to use each social media outlet as a means for recruitment. No system is ANYTHING without the participants. The idea is to create a sisterhood that lifts each other up while having fun competing.Who will be in charge of your postings on social media? How often will this happen?Media HandlingLeading up to Pageant Day, the director might want to contact the local media, such as the newspapers. Media outlets tend to love supporting local business. Perhaps they will send out a reporter or a writer will give you call to do an over-the-phone interview. In addition to the pre-pageant press, you might want to inform the same outlets of the names of the winners. This level of detail could be sent to a pageant-related magazine or the newspaper.SponsorshipThere are two types of sponsorship: one in which the system benefits and one in which the contestant directly benefits. For example, the director might gain sponsorships to defray the cost of the pageant-related events leading up to Pageant Day, the day itself and even for afterwards. In ideal contestants might seek sponsorship to defray their entry fees. Sometimes sponsorship is not solely monetary. For instance, a contestant might become sponsored in the form of her formal gown. That is, a local gown shop might provide the dress to the contestant as a means of support.AppearancesSome pageants require a specific number of appearances or reward for greater numbers of appearances. What is an appearance? An appearance is when a contestant or winner goes into the community and is seen sporting the crown and sash. This is the part where people tend to thing that pageantry is pompous. However, what girl does not like to feel pretty?Oftentimes, appearances are done at business or organizations that are in the realm of the contestant’s platform or topic for which the contestant supports. I will talk about platform a little later…Sometimes, a director will keep a schedule of event that includes all of her contestants and all of her queens. For other directors, they leave this up to the individual contestant. Once you win a title, you are considered royalty amongst the system. Your photo is often posted online on the system website in the Hall of Fame. What does ‘platform’ mean?Platform allows a pageant girl to truly make a difference in the world. That is, it is a change to ‘shake off’ the negative thoughts that people may hav about the pageant industry. In the real world…In my case, since my son is adopted, my pageant platform is ALWAYS Child Advocacy & Adoption. Therefore, most of my appearances were centered around events or activities that supported single moms or adoptees. That meant spending time at adoption agencies, collecting backpacks for students and more. That doesn’t mean that I steered away from events that were not to the benefit of children, because there were times that I emceed 5k runs and her runs…but I never drank when wearing my crown and sash or put myself in a questionable situation. You will want to remind your girls to conduct themselves in the same manner. Here are just a few of the ways you can encourage your girls to get involved and to use their crown to help others:1. Ride in a parade while passing out candy2. Volunteer time at a children’s agency – this will require specific permissions and maybe a background check3. Create greeting cards for shut-ins or nursing home folks4. Become a speaker5. Be an announcerThese things and more will help you get started on your way to becoming an all-star, new director in the crazy and rewarding world of pageantry.
