Q: How would the world be affected if global warming was a thing?It the 1980’s, because of actions by OPEC in the 60’s and 70’s, several countries started to have concerns over their energy consumption, the escalating cost of oil, and the security of their supply of oil.Many of these countries had experienced energy crises in 1973 and again in 1979.All of these countries had experienced heavy inflation as the price of oil went from $3 per barrel to $42 per barrel. And they were all experiencing surges in demand for oil, as cars were rolling off assembly lines by the millions and everybody wanted one.The primary affected countries were UK, USA, Japan, Canada, Netherlands (who had gotten on the opposite side of the Arab countries by helping defend Israel against them) and so were punished by embargoes imposed by OPEC. But all countries that needed more and more oil suffered from the price increases.In 1977 Carter talked to the American people and claimed “peak oil” was just around the corner, and that they, the American people must take this seriously and make hard choices that would seriously curb their need for oil from OPEC. He wanted the US to reduce it’s imports from 16 million barrels per day down to 6 million barrels per day. But consumption was instead increasing.In the early 1980’s the inflation caused by the jacking up of oil price by OPEC caused a global recession. Interest went through the roof, people lost homes, factories had trouble staying open, there were large layoffs. It was a bad time. And oil consumption, oil prices, and OPEC were the primary cause.Money, starting with Carter, got pumped into climate research. Carter increased the EPA budget in 1977–78 by $4.5 billion dollars. An increase of 800% in funding while the staffing increased by only 25%. This provided them an annual funding of $4 billion dollars to give out to universities to do research to support the narrative that was being created.“Using energy is bad, we need to use less energy, less oil”It was during these times the various climate alarmisms started rolling out. (It is not a coincidence).Acid Rain.Global Cooling.The Ozone “Hole”.Global Warming.Climate Change. Climate Disruption. Extreme Weather Events.Melting Ice Caps. Sea Level Rise.Coral Bleaching.Ocean Acidification.And the answer to all of them, was the same answer needed to handle OPEC. And the rising price of oil. And security of the oil supply.“USE LESS OIL”.But now the message had changed. It wasn’t any longer “use less oil because of economics, politics, production, and OPEC”.It had become “use less oil to save the world”.The funding of research of the climate and environmental changes alleged caused by humans grew into different departments. The CDC now gave out grants. As did the NSF. NASA-GISS. And several others.But you can only employ a limited number of people taking temperatures and selecting, adjusting, homogenizing, and assembling data. And there was so much money flowing available for research. So all sorts of things started getting studied and claimed related to fossil fuel use.People started counting insects and comparing populations year to year. Leaf sizes. Flowering schedules. Migration patterns. The intensity of the colour of butterfly wings. You name it. If they could make a claim that fossil fuel use might be affecting something on a grant proposal, there was a good chance they could get some cash to study it.And so you started getting really ridiculous claims being made.
