The one thing that the sub-par Deep Space Nine episode “Let He Who Is Without Sin...” does well is clearly establish that, in many ways, Worf does not act like a Klingon. The reasons for this become clear in an extended exchange that he has with Jadzia Dax, his partner who has had decades of experience with Klingons in the form of the current Dax host as well as in the form of Jadzia’s predecessor Curzon. Quoting the dialogue seems worthwhile. WORF  A Klingon woman would never even   give me grounds for suspicion.   DAX  How would you know? Curzon spent   more time around Klingons than you   ever did.   WORF  You may have lived among my   people, but you are not a Klingon.   I am.    DAX  Maybe so. But you're not like any   other Klingon I've ever met.   Dax calms down a little. She wants to make sure Worf   knows she's not there just to browbeat him. She's   trying to deal with an important issue in their   relationship.   DAX  What happened to you, Worf?   You're a paragon of Klingon honor   and discipline, but when it comes   to the Klingon passion for life,   the exuberance, the enjoyment of   the moment, you're constantly   holding yourself back. Why?   DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... These   are some of his most private and closely guarded   feelings.   WORF  (simply)  I do not wish to lose you,   Jadzia.   DAX  Then talk to me. Please.   Worf goes inside himself for a moment, then...   WORF  (a rhetorical question)  You know that from the age of   seven I was raised by humans on   the farmworld of Gault?   Dax nods.   WORF  It was a sparsely populated world   of not more than twenty thousand   inhabitants. It often seemed as   if everyone knew everyone else.   But one thing was for certain...  everyone knew me.  (a beat)  I was the Klingon child. The   "uncontrollable" one. I was the   biggest, strongest, most fearless   child on the entire planet. I   fought hard, I played hard, I did   as I pleased.   DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He... We made   it to the championships, and I was   determined to win. Near the end   of the second half, with the score   tied, my team got a corner kick.   The ball sailed up high. Both I   and one of my opponents, a human   boy named Mikel, leaped up to head   the ball. He had position, but I   was determined to score. I   remember laughing with excitement   as I threw myself at him.   This is a difficult memory for Worf. He stops,   overcome by emotion.   DAX  Go on.   WORF  The next thing I knew, the ball   was sailing into their goal. I   roared in triumph and turned to   Mikel, to gloat, only to find him   lying on the grass bleeding. Our   heads had collided when we went up   for the ball. I didn't even feel   the impact, but I'd broken his   neck. He died the next day.   DAX  It was an accident.   WORF  Which only makes it worse.   Compared to Klingons, humans are   fragile creatures. I realized at   that moment that to live among   them I would have to practice...  restraint.   DEEP SPACE NINE: "Let He ... But in time, it became   part of who I was, who I am.” I would argue that, if there is one thing we know about Worf, it is that he does not act like Klingons. Orphaned at a very young age and apparently lacking most memories of his family, Worf was raised by a human couple in the Federation in a non-Klingon environment. His first significant engagement with Klingon culture seems to have been as an adult, when in “Sins of the Father” he was introduced to his brother for the first time and faced with the challenge of defending the honour of his father and his house. Later appearances demonstrated the extent to which Worf was either unaware or uninterested in followong the norms of Klingon culture, perhaps most obviously when on the eve of the Klingon invasion of Cardassia he chose to break with Gowron even if though doing so meant the liquidation of the House of Worf. Opposing the invasion of Cardassia on the grounds of it being unjustifiable to that extent was a very un-Klingon thing to do. Worf is clearly biologically Klingon and is deeply marked by Klingon culture, but his experience growing up in the Federation among other species—more fragile species, ones with different ethics—has clearly marked Worf.Worf is certainly well-educated in the norms of Klingon culture, but he is a Klingon who is either unpracticed in the actual lived experience of Klingons or unwilling to follow their ways. Worf might have become a powerful and influential Klingon, one who could even have become Chancellor had he chosen not to give the position to Martok, but he did so as an outsider, someone whose knowledge of Klingon culture was something he had learned as an adult and never felt comfortable with. Worf’s exchange with Ezri Dax in “Tacking Into the Wind”, in which this latest host of the Dax symbiont with less investment in the Klingons than earlier hosts makes his status as a relative outsider among Klingons who are not who he would like them to be clear, is worth seeing. Worf had a completely unrealistic understanding of what Klingon civilization actually was, ultimately condemning it (mostly fairly, I think) for its failure to live up to its ideals without understanding that its cultural norms were to not to live up to those ideals.Worf might not act like a human, but neither does he act like a normal Klingon. He fits in, but only barely, and even then (I would argue) substantially on account of his many notable connections with powerful Klingons. He may not act like a human, but he surely does not act like a traditionalist Klingon. Worf remained very restrained no matter what culture he was active in, and while among Klingons Worf stood out.
