PDF Editor FAQ

With the IR-1 spousal visa, how soon can one work after entering the US?

Once you’ve arrived and your immigrant visa has been counterstamped by an immigration officer, you can apply for work immediately and can begin working as soon as you have applied for a Social Security Number. If you submitted an advance application for a SSN at your consular appointment (which is usually an option), you can start working immediately. You do not have to wait for your green card or Social Security card to actually arrive before you can start working. An unexpired foreign passport with unexpired I-551 stamp is a List A document and serves, for I-9 purposes, as both of proof of identity and proof of employment eligibility. This is true for all immigrant visas, and is not specific to the IR-1 spousal visa.

What happens if my permanent resident card expires?

If we’re talking about a US “green card”, it means that you can no longer use that card as proof of identity. You will no longer be able to use it to prove work eligibility when starting a new job or to prove your identity to TSA or when entering a secured federal facility. And you will not be able to use it to reenter the United States although if you try to reenter with an expired green card, the CBP inspector (if you are otherwise admissible) will usually allow you to file an I-90 while in secondary processing and may actually give you a temporary validity sticker at that time, which will revive your card’s validity for several months while you wait for your renewal to be processed. You may also have problems renewing your state-issued driver’s license or identification card. That is basically all the consequences of letting a green card expire. Your status does not expire; you remain a lawful permanent resident indefinitely as long as you don’t breach any of the conditions of residency. There is, at the present time at least, no legal requirement to keep your card from expiring or to promptly renew it when it does, at least to the extent that failing to do so would impact your status as a lawful permanent resident.Note also that, if your green card is expired, you can still use an unexpired state-issued driver’s license or identification card (provided that your state issued ID is REAL ID compliant), or your foreign passport (if unexpired) as a valid form of ID at TSA screenings or to enter a secured federal facility. And you can use your state ID plus your Social Security Card to satisfy the I-9 requirements to start a new job. You are not limited to only using your green card for these purposes. If you still have a valid state ID and your Social Security Card, about the only impact of letting your green card expire is that you can’t travel out of the US and then back in again. Also, note very well that you do not have to renew an expired or expiring green card in order to apply for naturalization. If your green card is expired or will soon expire when you appear for your naturalization interview, the USCIS officer is supposed to evaluate whether you would be eligible to renew your card if you were to apply, and if he or she concludes that you would be (which is always the case if the officer determines that you are eligible to naturalize), the officer will, in addition to adjudicating your application for naturalization, attach a temporary validity sticker to your green card so that you have a valid green card to tide you over until your naturalization ceremony. So if your card is expiring or about to expire, but you are about to apply for or have already applied for naturalization, don’t blow the $540 on renewing it; you don’t have to.

Comments from Our Customers

I was in need of this service and it worked seamlessly and has a lot of options during the free trial that I had access to. I was not in need of the 1-year subscription that I was charged for. I reached out to their support team when I saw the charge come through and they canceled my subscription as well as fully reversed the charge with no hassle at all. This is a very useful service for those who need to edit pdfs frequently! Anna from their support team did a wonderful job and was very pleasant to work with.
