If you are a US citizen or US resident and yet somehow do not know your own Social Security number, you should ask your parents, as they most likely have that information somewhere, if nothing else in order to file tax returns. If they cannot (or will not, for some reason) tell you, your options are:File Form SS-5 with the Social Security Administration to request a new Social Security card. The SSA will review your application, determine your SSN (or if you don’t have one and are eligible, issue one to you), and mail you a new card, which will reveal to you what your number is; orGo to a Social Security Administration office and request assistance.There is no fee to apply for a Social Security card.You must have government-issued identification that clearly identifies who you are in order to obtain your own Social Security number. Additional documentation will likely be required (although what that documentation will be will vary by circumstance). Review the instructions for Form SS-5. Note that using false or fraudulent documents in connection with a SS-5 filing constitutes several serious federal offenses, and the SSA is extremely willing to refer individuals it suspects of attempting to commit identity fraud to federal prosecutors.There is absolutely no means whatsoever to obtain the Social Security number of a person other than yourself, if that person is over the age of 18, still alive, and not declared incompetent by a court of competent jurisdiction, other than asking that person to provide it to you. The Social Security Administration does not permit requests to be filed by a representative, except in cases of infancy or legal incapacity. For persons under 18, you must provide proof that that you are the parent or legal guardian of the individual in question; the only acceptable documentation for this purpose is a certified birth certificate (or equivalent document, such as a Consular Report of Birth Abroad) naming you as the child’s parent or a certified court order naming you as the person’s legal guardian or (adoptive) parent. For persons declared incapacitated, you will need a certified copy of the order of the court naming you as that person’s legal guardian.If you need to know someone else’s Social Security Number for a legitimate purpose and you are not that person’s legal guardian, the only way you can learn it is to ask them to provide it. There is no other lawful way to obtain that information.

Why can’t the homeless get welfare?Some homeless people do get welfare. I’m one of them. I receive monthly food stamps (currently known as SNAP via EBT).The leading reason many homeless people do not receive any welfare is because of the frustration caused by the bureaucracy of the processes one must follow to apply for welfare.Of the more than 200 other homeless people with whom I’ve become acquainted, fewer than 20 of them have computer skills that are good enough to navigate to a government website and then find the correct webpage and then fill out an online application for welfare services.Why don’t they just fill out a hard copy application??? Unfortunately, many homeless people simply cannot understand the instructions on government applications which contain too much jargon. Also, believe it or not, there are some homeless people who cannot legibly write down rudimentary information such as, name, date of birth, social security number, etc.Why don’t they just go to a government welfare office and let one of the employees provide assistance with the application process???Some do, but let’s not forget, you can NOT apply for anything from any government organization if you can’t show evidence of your identity. That’s right folks; you might be surprised to learn there are some homeless people who have absolutely no form of identification at all; no passport, no driver’s license, no social security card, no birth certificate, no health insurance card, no voter registration card, no school ID… nothing, zip, zilch, nada. If they ever had an ID, it was lost long, long, long ago.Why don’t they just tell the welfare caseworker to call a ‘Collateral Contact’ to verify identification?Collateral Contact??? What the heck is that? You see? We have just taken a dive into the abyss of government jargon.A collateral contact would be anyone employed with any organization recognized by our government that provides services to homeless people and who can verify the identity of the applicant. It could be someone employed at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen or any one of the many religious organizations that provide services to the homeless community.I’ve tried to help a lot of my homeless friends navigate their way through the mazes of the welfare application processes and I’ve succeeded with a lot of them.Helping my homeless friends is fun and rewarding. After all, they are my friends and in many ways, they feel like my family.
