Why is my Christian child being taught Sharia law in public school but Christianity is not being taught to the Muslim school children?

When I received this question I reached out to the questioner:“I would really like to know what school your child attends that teaches Sharia law. Please let me know the city and country and the school. Thank you.”The reply included several media citations:Muslims’ faith is stronger than Christians’, school worksheet claimsU.S. school fails Christian student for refusing Islamic prayer - WNDSchool Apologizes After Students Pray to Allah on Field Trip to MosqueThis is a multifaceted issue and I will do my best to offer some thoughts on each one.TEACHING OF RELIGION VS. SOCIAL STUDIESPublic schools in the United States are not supposed to favor one religion over another in instruction, or to give government sanction to any religion. In reality schools often implicitly favor one religion over another. In spite of court cases and parental protests, many schools include prayers at events and include local churches and clergy in many activities. The scope of this type of activity varies considerably from one place to another, including schools that are closed for Jewish holidays in areas with high Jewish student population, and lots of church involvement in schools in the part of the country where I live. Honestly, I am surprised at how much my children know about certain Christian denominations solely from attending public school. By and large, the Christian elements of public school are not noticed by most people because those elements seem normal. Indeed, it would seem as if there is very little Christian content.I give this all as background. The real dilemmas involve what is to be included in the curriculum. It is generally agreed that students should learn social studies, and any authentic study of society includes religions because they are a key component of how human societies function. The problem is that curricula are often overly simplified. All of the questions and answers quoted in the media articles above are perfect examples of over simplification. Islam, like Christianity, is a religion with a diversity of practice. To have to present Islam in a simplified manner is to gloss over this diversity and the complications that exist within Islam. Most Christians I know would face a dilemma: do they want the complications and disagreements of Christianity to be taught in school, or would they like them glossed over? Perhaps they would prefer that the whole thing be left unmentioned. The problem is that in the United States, even if Christianity is left out of the curriculum, most people are going to learn about it anyway because it is the dominant religion. On the other hand, most students will learn very little about Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and so on unless they learn about it in social studies classes. Why should they learn anything about these religions? They are in the news everyday. Buddhists in Burma are forcing Muslims to become refugees in Bangladesh. The Hindu majority party in India just won national elections. The US government wants to ban refugees from Muslim majority countries. Jewish settlers want Israel to annex land into Israel proper. Religion is in the news every day, but the news is a terrible way to learn about what proponents of the world’s religions actually feel about their faith.INTERFAITH RELATIONS AND THE TEACHING OF RELIGIONThe problem as I see it is that schools approach teaching piecemeal. There is rarely any integrated plan about what should be taught. Rather there are mandates, mandates at the state level, mandates at the local level, de facto mandates because something is going to be on a standardized test. To try to keep up with all these mandates teachers reach out to companies that produce classroom modules and worksheets. Nobody is mandated to make sure that the curriculum modules are accurate and the teachers are not experts in every facet of the subjects they teach. To top it off, almost everyone in education feels awkward about the subject of religion. Therefore nobody who has expertise in how to teach about religions that are not our own is involved in creating the classroom materials. There is an enormous difference between teaching about one’s own religion to those who are among its adherents, vs. teaching about various religions as a way of fostering general understanding. The experts in this field are those who are involved in interfaith relations or interfaith dialogue. Alas, many would view the entire enterprise of interfaith relations as suspect. But the purpose of interfaith relations is not to convert anyone, but to help us truly understand the point of view of those practicing different religions. We do have to live together on this planet, whether we like it or not! Those who have spent decades facilitating communication between those of different faiths have discovered that there are ways of explaining religions that do not over simplify, and that confer respect while still articulating differences and disagreements. Furthermore, it is possible to present a religion in the best possible light, and to follow up with the main disagreements among followers of that religion and the challenges that religion is facing. Finally, it is important, as the original questioner pointed out, that the same level of respect and attention to detail be given to each religion discussed.Of course, in order to put such teaching into our schools we need to admit that teaching about religions is important and to help people understand that learning about a religion is not the same as promoting it. It is my opinion that in an increasingly diverse society we all need to learn about one another. There are many people who would love to learn something about what goes on inside a Baptist or Catholic or Presbyterian church, just as there are those who have no idea what is involved in being a Baha’i, a Sikh or a Zoroastrian.

Seeking out and nurturing healthy relationships with others is important because that sense of community helps to keep you accountable, it puts learning opportunities within reach, and it allows you to better the lives of others. Each of these rewards is a great motivator on its own, but when you have all three you will never be in need of additional motivation.Go To ChurchWhen I say go to Church I’m not saying you need to practice a particular religion to stay motivated. What I am saying is that just like people who practice a particular faith, getting plugged into a community of like-minded people can help you stay grounded and on course until arriving at your predetermined destination. When I decided I was going to pay off my student debt because it was something that was holding me back from bigger and better things, I knew that there weren’t many people in my inner circle who saw debt as a detriment. Most of my friends and even some of my family members saw debt as a normal part of life. The idea of living a minimalist lifestyle in order to pay off a loan 15 years ahead of schedule was silly to them.It became very apparent to me that I wasn’t going to get much helpful advice or encouragement from my friends and loved ones, not because they aren’t great people, but because they didn’t see the world as I did. They weren’t sold on the same mission as I was.As I started to educate myself on how I could better my financial situation I stumbled on to different communities based around the common goals of financial independence and debt-free living. In time, the personal success stories of people who had been in my shoes and achieved their goal of being debt-free became more than just practical advice on how to get where I wanted to go. These stories fueled me and inspired me to pay off my debt even faster.Through the communities built around Dave Ramsey, Deacon Hayes’ blog, Well Kept Wallet, and others, I found stories of success affirming that the goals I had set for myself were achievable. Better yet, these communities kept me steadfast in the belief that what I was doing was worthwhile.Going to Church through MediaOn my journey to pay of my student debt I found community through media. I was connected to like-minded and insightful people through radio programming, podcast, blogs, books, and social media. While we often think of some of these media channels to be purely one directional, podcasts and blogs allow for comments, radio shows allow people to call in, and social media is meant to be social. If you truly seek the benefits of community in pursuing your goals and staying motivated, today’s technology gives everyone an outlet to do just that. For people whose goals lie in a very niche area, media and technology can help you get out of what might be a negative group-think environment of your current circle. By connecting with people across the county or across the globe you can get the moral and practical support you need to stay motivated and stay on track. If you are surrounded by people on a daily basis who haven’t accomplished what you want to accomplish, or simply don’t want to, it can be easy to slip into a mind-set that makes your goals seem unattainable.Jim Rohn is famous for having said that “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” and I think my experience speaks to that wisdom. When I was surrounded only by people with car payments and student loans, my debt seemed normal. At the point when I decided to do something about being in debt myself, my progress was slow until I started to surround myself with the influence of like-minded people; people that were disgusted by the thought of being in debt themselves. It wasn’t until I plugged myself into these communities through different forms of media that my financial literacy sky rocketed and my progress in paying off my debt became measurable.Going to Church in the FleshI’ve always been a proponent of getting out into the world and mixing with people who know more than me.Professionally, there are all kinds of organizations that make good outlets for that. Industry specific organization that put an emphasis on learning and best practices, over just networking, have always interested me more. These settings give the folks that you want to connect with and learn from the forum to demonstrate and share their professional mastery. This is often done through panel discussions or presentations as part of the organization’s programming. In an organization or happy-hour event that has been established purely for the purpose of networking, exchanges that promote professional development can sometimes be over shadowed by small talk.Mastermind groups are another way to establish a sense of community in-person. Sometimes they are facilitated through telecommunications (conference calls, Skype, Google hangouts, ect.), but typically they are still more intimate than a media based community. If you’re interested in learning more about what a mastermind is or how you might start and structure your own I suggest listening to the episode of Mitch Mathews’ Dream. Think. Do. Podcast entitled, Masterminds, Juntos, and the Fine Art of Not Going it Alone.Don’t be a SuperchickenBeing a part of a community is great for the health of your human spirit and fostering high levels of motivation over time, but only if you truly participate in the community. In her TED Talk, Why it’s Time to Forget the Pecking Order at Work, Margaret Heffernan uses a study by William Muir of Purdue University to illustrate that cooperative communities will typically outperform the ability of ultra-productive individuals, or teams comprised of ultra-productive individuals. In her presentation, Heffernan refers to Muir’s study of the productivity among chickens as measured by eggs produced over six generations.Muir’s study examined the differences in egg laying productivity between two flocks of chickens. The control group was a typical flock of chickens that were left to do what chickens do over 6 generations. The second group was comprised of chickens that regularly produced an above average number of eggs; you could call these superchickens.Over the course of the experiment Muir would select among the group of superchicken, only the most productive for breeding.Six generations later, the first flock had significantly increased their egg production and the chickens themselves were fully feathered and otherwise healthy. Meanwhile, the flock of superchickens had dwindled to only three surviving birds. The remaining chickens had survived by pecking the others to death. As it turned out the superchickens were only capable of producing more eggs at the expense of other chickens in their flock. When placed in an ultra-competitive flock on which competitiveness was heightened through breeding, competition lead to the demise of the flock.Similarly, you will benefit less from the communities you plug into if you only take from the group and never give back. You could even contribute to its demise by operating at the expense of other community members. You’ll burn bridges as you go by doing this and you’re likely to find yourself in a situation with no community to foster the long-term motivation needed to propel yourself forward.[ This answer was adapted from Staying Motivated in Pursuit of Career Success ]

What do you do to motivate yourself when you are about to give up?

[SHORT ANSWER: If your on the verge of giving up you've already made your decision to stop trying. There is seldom a way to come back from that. It's like what people say about the end of relationship. 'if you were together for 4 years, your were breaking up for 2.' The wheels are already in motion and the end can't be prevented.]Motivation and the Human SpiritMotivation is something that affects us on a deeper level. The Cocodoc worked great. I only used it once and since I had no occasion to use it again, I cancelled. There were no issues with the cancellation. The charge was removed from my credit card. I am very happy with this product. I will order it again when I need it.
