Attorneys have their own attorneys if they are smart. After 30 years of practice I started taking only pro bono cases and I was bored so I became a high school Math teacher. In 2015 I had cancer. I only missed 8 days of work for chemo, 35 radiations and radical surgery. My reviews have always been above excellent. In 2016 a half time position came open and I asked to take it as I was tired. Our email about it said it was for the 2016–17 school year. During that time I was still considered a full time employee with a reduced schedule and received full time benefits. I wrote the “plan” for a new course and I selected the text. At the end of the part time year, my Department wrote me in full time, another teacher asked to go part time and I left with instructions to write one course and rewrite another.A few days later I get a call that the principal has decided I could not come back full time. I asked why in writing and in writing was told she would not tell me why. Wow!!!! Oh, by the way, I was 68 years old.I wrote up paper work to file an age and disability discrimination case. Before I filed it I felt I should run it by someone and my Teacher’s Association (non union) provided legal help. I had always prided myself on short sweet and to the point material. When I saw what I wrote through the eyes of an impartial lawyer, it was pure emotional babble.The lawyer and I rewrote it down to bare legal bones and I won after the first meeting with counsel for my District. No settlement, no non disclosure, just “you win”. They even returned me to my same school where everyone knew the Principal lost. (now gone somewhere else)I think that if I had filed my emotional outburst I would have alienated my allies and made myself look bad. I may have lost or ended up in a long protracted fight. Just the bare facts presented were enough to make the case. You cannot handle your own matters in a dispassionate way.

Is Amazon an unpleasant place to work? Why or why not?

I was a software engineer at Amazon for 18 months. I wouldn't say it was an unpleasant place to work by any means. For the most part, my coworkers were very smart and easy to get along with. The offices were in a good location and I had a nice view of Lake Union from my desk. My work included a number of interesting technical challenges, I learned a lot of things while I was there, and I felt my compensation was more than fair.That said, Amazon does have a lot of employee turnover. The reason is not so much that Amazon is an unpleasant place, but rather because other employers can be more pleasant in ways that do matter. One aspect of Amazon culture that turns many people off is the constant emphasis on frugality. Amazon doesn't tend to buy lunches for its employees, offer outstanding fully-paid health coverage, match charitable contributions, invest in top-of-the-line workstations for developers to use, or other expensive things that other top employers are known to do. This focus on frugality has helped keep prices low, which in turn has allowed Amazon to grow to the impressive size it is today. The downside is that it's hard for any company to hire and retain top employees when other companies are willing to offer a bunch of attractive fringe benefits in addition to being competitive salary-wise.I eventually left mainly because I came to realize that I had very little passion for e-commerce. That, and the pager duty got on my nerves. Even though I was only on call one week out of five, and even though getting paged wasn't an everyday occurrence while on call, I grew tired of needing to schedule my life in such a way that I would always be available to respond to a high-priority event if necessary. When my current employer offered me a job in a subject matter area that interested me more, where I would not be required to carry a pager, I didn't really hesitate to make the switch.I'll certainly consider Amazon the next time I look for a job. Like I said, it wasn't an unpleasant place to work overall. Certain divisions (such as Amazon Web Services) are working on things that would interest me much more than maintaining a retail website proved to be. However, it might not be the first place I decide to apply.

What did you notice during an interview that made you not want the job?

I was doing a phone interview with the company’s HR woman. She was super-excited about getting me in for an interview the very next day…Till I mentioned that I have a disability.* Instantly her entire demeanor changed. She snarled, “What is it?!”I told her I have a hereditary illness that prevents me from working more than 40 hours a week. Immediately she said bluntly, “Hold on a minute.” A few moments later she was back on the phone, pasting on this nicey-nice, sweety-sweet voice and making lame excuses about how she’d “looked at her calendar wrong” and couldn’t interview me until late the next week. I said I could come in sooner but she insisted it had to be the latest day.I realized immediately what had happened. She’d put me on hold to check with her boss about whether she could deny me an interview. The boss had said no, so she’d concocted her excuses to put me last in line so they could call me before then to tell me they’d given the job to someone else.I knew right then that if that was their HR department’s attitude it wasn’t somewhere I’d want to work even if I didn’t have a disability. So I called her voicemail at 11:30 p.m. the night before my scheduled interview and left her a message that I wouldn’t be in. Didn’t lose a moment’s sleep about it, either.*I know it is not required/advisable to disclose that you have a disability but I always do because I think it’s more ethical to be up-front about it.ETA: I don’t want to give the name of my illness, but suffice it to say that:It is covered under ADA.Most people my age who have it can only manage to work part-time if at all.I’d love to work part-time, but I need the benefits that come with full-time work, and I really don’t want to be on disability.
