As a missionary kid I have quite a few interesting travel experiences, not all of which pleasant, but for this particular answer let me use one of my more recent memorable experiences.As you already know I am a missionary kid,but let me provide some further context, which will help you fully appreciate this story.This happened in October of 2017 when I was in Honduras as an SM (student missionary), working as a teacher in a Christian school. As an Indian, I didn’t look exactly like your average Honduran, but what was surprising to those who didn’t know me is that I speak perfect Spanish, having lived in Argentina for 3 years sometime ago. This was something I didn’t always let on, as there is much to be learnt from people who don’t know you understand them. *wink winkAt this school there were three of us student missionary teachers, who taught subjects in English, one of whom was an American guy who spoke fluent Italian but little Spanish. This guy became my bro and we were soon playing basketball together, going out to eat Honduran food together and just hang out.Around a month before my friend was to go back home we were looking forward to having a whole week long holiday to celebrate Honduran independence in October. This week we had set aside to go to the beach together.Now on to the story…The two of us got up early on Sunday morning and were ready to goby 7:00, in order to take the first bus at 7:30 to take the bus from the town of Peña Blanca to the capital city of Tegucigalpa. This was to be a bus ride of around 4 hours passing through the heart of the country. This provided beautiful scenery climbing up high hills and passing through deep valleys with rivers of white water.Arriving into the capital city from above is a pretty sight in itself as the whole city is built over gentle hills, and is in a humongous valley.Once we got off the bus we walked a few kilometers to another part of the city where we could catch a bus to the southeastern part of the country, where we were supposed to get off around an hour before reaching our final destination and get onto another bus which would take us to the coast where we would then get on a little boat that took us out to the island of amapala where we would spend our week in untroubled bliss.Unfortunately once we got onto the bus we became so engrossed into our eyelids that we completely missed our stop and woke up to find ourselves in a city called Choluteca, on the border of Nicaragua. This was a nice city, quite touristic and famous so we decided to stay there a day before heading to the island. By this time it was around 4:30 PM and all the sights were getting ready to close so we began to search for a hotel to stay the night.Now here is where the context I provided earlier becomes important. We were two teachers who on top of that were students. Financially speaking we were not ready to splurge on $120 or so on hotel rooms per night, (that was around 1/3 our individual budgets) our budget only allowed for 8–12 dollars for daily accommodation at most. This being said we did look around for a solid hour or two and then headed to pick up the final bus of the day to the place where we were supposed to get off.By the time we got back to the place we were supposed to get off it was 6:30 PM and already becoming dark. We had barely enough time to get on the last bus to the coast and when we got there at 8 PM there was just one skiff there to take everyone from the bus to the island.Once we got onto the island, we found a few kids who were playing by the beach and asked them for directions to the hotels on the island. These boys somehow happened to have an “uncle” who had an extra room available if we wanted to avoid paying for an expensive hotel room. Once we settled in to this place we set our minds to the next most important thing left to do that day.Food.Somehow we had gone the whole day without having eaten a square meal. So as soon as we laid our bags down, and looked in the bathroom, we went back to the beach where there was a restaurant and ate.I had a fish.The next day we woke up early, to find it was chilly and cold outside, certainly not warm enough to swim. So after a hearty breakfast we set out to walk around the whole island, which had one paved paved ring road, of around 7–8 km. After quite a bit of walking, an auto rickshaw pulled up and the owner asked us if we wanted to go anywhere.Now I say auto rickshaw because that’s what they are called in India, where these thre-wheelers are made. In Honduras however, they are called moto taxis.The man in the moto taxi offered to take us wherever we wanted in the island for a negotiable price, (To me every price is a negotiable price) however I was interested in something else entirely.As soon as I understood that this man was down for business I offered to rent his auto rickshaw for the whole, telling him I was from India and that these moto taxis were the most common types of transport there. I told him that it would be more enjoyable for us and less tedious for him this way.It took some convincing, and negotiating, but finally we settled on a price around 1/4 of his original price and took off. I even taught my friend to drive!Once we completed our lap of the island we decided that there wasn’t really that much to see or do, much less spend a whole week at so we quickly had a mini conference.From our discussion we agreed that we should leave this place and go somewhere else, but also that both of us still wanted to go to the beach. Now having been at the pacific side of the country we decided to try the Atlantic side.After returning the rickshaw/moto taxi to its owner, we crossed back to the mainland in one of these boats and get on the bus back to where we had originally missed our stop.From here we planned to take a bus back to the capital city, Tegucigalpa, and either spend the night, or find our way towards the Atlantic, on the other side of the country.As plans go, out plan failed. Again. For the second time in two days we struck out on luck. There were no busses heading towards the capital as everyone was leaving the capital for their own holidays. Thus we stood there with our thumbs out waiting for a kind soul who would take us to the capital. Eventually after around 2 hours waiting, we found a lady driving a flat bed mini-truck who was willing to take us to the capital.Having got on the truck with the daylight just about to fade into dusk you might think that things were going to get better and now comes the real vacation. Well you would be wrong.First the driver lady let more and more people into the back of their truck and we ended up being around 7 people in the back, with all of our bags as well. Turns out these new fellow passengers were illegal immigrants from Nicaragua on their way to El Salvador, and then probably higher north. After a while conversing with them they even shared some of their food with us. Real nice people.Well that’s nice you might say, where can it go wrong? Here’s how: RAIN.This wasn’t your average rainy rain. This was some next level rain. There was lightning and thunder. It was a full fledged thunderstorm. Being wet, and sitting on a metallic bed, I wasn’t having a vacation here. I was honest to God frightened. Our new Nicaraguan friends got off but we had no idea what to do, so we stayed on.After the rain stopped, and the sun went down whatever fun we were having pretty much ended. We were now wet, cold, tired, and hungry. We were so cold we took turns doing push-ups in the back of that moving truck. (Ok that was a bit fun) By around 7:30 PM we were at the capital and now began to seriously think about stopping for the night. We got down at a gas station and as “luck” would have it there was a man who was heading towards the interioir of the country taking us exactly the way we would be heading to words the Atlantic coast.Having thanked our lady benefactor we now joined this new one who would take us another 100 or so kms to a city in the middle of the country, halfway to the Atlantic.Our joy at this new and “improved” indoor tide was short lived however, as the middle aged gentleman started to get more and more distracted while regaling us with his tales of army service in the war with El Salvador in the 70s and his subsequent university career as a lawyer and his now retired life working in the press. His driving appeared more and more impaired and we started swerving into oncoming traffic more than once while he continued to talk. Luckily for us he also was a very slow driver never going above a speed of 40 kms/hr. Unfortunately this also meant having to spend around 2.5 whole hours with him while driving like a drunk Jehu.More than a few times I asked the man if he felt tired and needed to stop. I showed him my valid California drivers lisense and told him that if wanted to rest it was fine as I could take us the rest of the way. (I’m a missionary kid. Ive lived all over and can stand a little crazy driving. But this wasn’t just crazy driving. There were 18 wheelers speeding by us honking at us while this guy seemed to be drunk. I even leaned towards him to see if I could smell anything on his breath. Nothing. I didn’t know whether to feel better or worse.Finally as we entered into the city we were going to stop for the night, he did the worst. As we got off the exit ramp entering the city, the man put us into the left lane. The oncoming lane. I about lost my mind. I immediately told him that we were in the wrong lane. He wouldn’t listen. I repeated myself louder this time. Sir, you are in the oncoming lane. This is highly dangerous. He continued chatting as if we were best buds. Finally he saw an eighteen wheeler about 200 meters ahead of us heading straight towards us and I redhead over and held down his horn. He stopped talking. I yelled at him to look ahead and that we were in the wrong lane. This time he listened. He sloweed down, and drove right over the 10 inch divider that separated the two lanes and we missed getting killed by the eighteen wheeler as it barreled past us honking ever so loudly in the late night.If we could have gotten out any faster we would have, but the man insisted on dropping us off at his friends hotel. As we passed through the city we could see the nice hotels as we drove by, wishing that he would stop and we could get out of this nightmarish ride. But no, we passed all of them. We entered into the poorer part of the town, where the smell of urine entered into the vehicle itself. It was here that the man let us out and told us that he forgot where his friend was. We waited for the man to leave and then we started walking. Past the train tracks and back into the better part of town, where all the hotels were.We were still wet and cold and now walking had fully woken us up. On finding the prices of the hotels to be way out of our comfort zone and realizing that we would only be there another 5–6 hours before the first bus to the coast we decided that the best course of action would be to wait at the gas station where the busses stopped on their way to the coast and catch the first one. We bought some gas station food and immediately devoured this before continuing to wait for the morning.While waiting, we heard Mexican mariachi music and headed around to investigate. On getting to the other side of the street we found a mariachi band merrily playing while also obviously drunk. This was at around 1 AM I was able to get a video of them playing and while quora doesnt let me upload the video here are some screenshots. It was dead hilarious and the even invited us to join them for drinks and a barbecue as soon as they finished singing which we graciously declined as we don’t drink, and just had gotten out of a crazy situation with a stranger.Once we left this unique gas station party, we returned inside the gas station where my friend decided to stay until morning sitting on some of the stools provided for the people who ate inside the station. I on the other hand could not wait inside this freezing air conditioned place any longer and went back outside by at least walking to find some warmth.Having walked a block or so, I came upon a closed house store, the kind of kiosk that is run from the front room of a house. This kiosk although closed, had a porch, closed by a roof. In this porch there was a ledge against the wall where I could take off my backpack and rest. Most importantly, there was a mud oven. Still warm! I immediately took some of the wet clothes inside my backpack, and laid them on the dry mud. The thing looked something like this.The stove was somehow still warm enough for me to dry around 3 changes of clothes in 30 mins, after which i hurried back to the gas station to call my friend. When we got back the stove wasn’t warm enough, so I made my friend wait there while I decided to look for some wood to start a fire.Finding dry wood was no easy task, but a few blocks down the road I found a mechanic shop that had some dry cardboard boxes lying around and some dry pieces of wood and headed back triumphantly.Once back at the kiosk, my friend had some matches, I had some paper, and we made a fire. It was now around 2:30 AM. With the fire going and our clothes drying we were no longer cold, wet, hungry, and tired, but just tired. We took turns napping for 30 mins until around 5:00 when the first bus came by.We quickly put out the fire and got our things on the bus (which had a working heater thank heaven!) at which point we promptly fell asleep. When we got to the coast at around 9:00,m y friend saw this sign and we quickly got off, the memory of our missing the first stop we were supposed to make fresh in our minds.After getting off the bus however, we found that my friend had misread the sign and we still had quite a bit to go before we reached our intended destination on the Atlantic coast.We headed to the nearest bus stop and decided to wait for the next bus. Around 30 seconds later I saw a toyota hilux headed our way and stuck my thumb out to see if they would stop for us. They did. We got on. I promptly fell asleep.We only had around 12 kms to go before we would reach our city destination: Omoa. Supposedly one of the nicer beaches on the mainland of Honduras.Unfortunately for us, I slept through the city. Again.But my friend didn’t! But he liked the view so much that he didn’t wake me up and we continued on the road while driving parallel to the ocean. When I woke up around 30 mins later some 15 kms after passing the city of Omoa, I asked my friend what happened and he explained to me that we were really close to the border with Guatemala and that he was thinking we could go over there.Unfortunately, I didn’t have my passport with me.*Thus, we were not going to be going to Guatemala,** and had to get off, and think about what we would do. After getting off, we decided to walk back towards the city, as we needed to start looking for a place to spend the rest of our holiday at.As we were walking, the sun started shining down on us and for the first time in this trip we actually felt warm. A few minutes later we found a street that headed towards the ocean and decided to try it, and ended up on a beautiful beach, with the rhythmic sound of waves moving in and out calling to us.There were a few hotels along the beach and we tried the first one. This is where all the misfortune we had became worth it. The hotel wasn’t an actual hotel, it was someone’s house, who in the plot next to his, had built beachhouses and a pool. When we asked the price he said that usually he charged upwards of $150 dollars for full families, since we were single just two of us he could give it to us for $100 a night.We were so tired that we almost took the deal no questions asked. But the indian in me came out at that moment, and I told him how my friend and I were student teachers in the country from the US and India respectively and that if he could lower his price a bit more it would help us a lot.Looking us over the man took a second, and said fine, I like you guys I guess I’ll help you out, “how much were you thinking?” Giving my friend the “I got this look” , I said “$500 Lempiras” which in dollars comes to around $50. The man was startled but said, “fine. You guys don’t know how lucky you are”Here are some pictures of the room we stayed in. Totally worth all the trouble we went through getting there.Finally we could rest.I’ll end the answer here, because from this point all we did was normal vacation stuff and trip back home is another story altogether.*on purpose, I didn’t want to lose it on this crazy trip. One day, I chose to DO THE WORK, of producing. It wasn't that I wanted to BE a Producer, necessarily. Just like many other professions, film production is chock full of people who are more concerned about the title than they are about doing the work that goes with it.The path to the two features I made, started in 1998 when I was working in the Wardrobe Department at Disney Studios in Burbank as a temp assistant to Tom Bronson.During that spring & summer, I did a fair amount of "above and beyond" for my boss, who then let me reach out to his boss at the time, Roger Shook, who ran Backlot Operations at Disney to see if I could spend some additional "off-the-clock" time in other backlot departments so I could learn what they did.I literally had no idea what Post Sound Mixing was, or really how Editorial worked, much less the concept that anyone could come in and use these services as long as they wanted to pay for them. Thankfully, I was granted the opportunity to fetch coffee and hang out so I could learn.At that time, I was also hanging around a group of LA indie filmmakers, called Filmmakers Alliance. There were a lot of people trying to get their own movies made, mostly shorts back at that time.Remember, this was when making movies still required FILM - so you would have to get one of two places to GIVE you a FILM camera, so that was Panavision or Otto Nemenz - Arri really didn't have an active presence in LA back then either that I knew about. So, you get Panavision to GIVE you a camera package that usually runs about $5k per week rental at a base price.Same goes for getting hands on ACTUAL film; AND for getting it processed, and dailies done and making your Interpositives and Internegatives (so you could make working prints without ruining your Original Negative). It was a chore, and it cost a lot, especially if you were working in Super 35mm and had an anamorphic squeeze on it...We also didn't have the massive volume of cheap camera support gear available today. So if you wanted camera moves that looked good, you would go lobby JL Fisher or Chapman for a camera dolly and see if you can get that for free for for super cheap.And with those, you also needed to have full Production Insurance in order to rent the gear (even if it was free). So then you gotta figure that out too.Making movies had a few more significant challenges then than we had just a few years later.Anyway, back to Filmmakers Alliance. A rag tag group of folks all trying to figure out how to get *something* made; and I ran into two filmmakers from UCLA who were both working on their end-of-the-school-year debut short films.They both said they were looking for someone to help them, and I raised my hand. These were two separate films, and as I came to learn, Producing always entails answering some really basic questions so you can get your picture made.What?Who?Where?When?How much?The more detailed the answers you provide to each question, the better your chances of actually finishing your film.So that spring, I pitched in and attempted to find as many questions as I could to answer and get the films made as the Production Coordinator on both of them. By the time the films were done - months of free work later, one of the filmmakers on the first short, "Solomon Bernstein's Bathroom" (SBB) thought that the level of work I brought to the table earned an Associate Producer credit.We premiered the films at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences theater on Wilshire Blvd, as part of UCLA's filmmaker program; and we went on to run SBB on a short four-wall booking to attempt to qualify it for Academy Awards consideration in the Shorts category. This was a bit of hubris, especially considering the short wasn't very good. But I digress.By the following Spring, and through staying involved at the Filmmakers Alliance, I was meeting lots of other filmmakers as well; and there was a lot of buzz around the new MiniDV digital cameras just coming out.I got to team up with the original Producer from SBB, this time as a full producer, and another FA filmmaker who had managed to get her hands on the first PAL mini-DV camera from Sony, which had everyone excited because it had 525 lines of resolution (so many more than the 480 NTSC mini DV cams!;) and it shot at 25fps. This filmmaker, whose name I omit by choice, also managed to get a rather famous Cinematographer interested in shooting her short for her in order to try out the camera. His name was Allen Daviau, and he had been the Cinematographer on ET, Empire of the Sun, Bugsy, Fearless, to name a few. He was the real deal; and he brought his team. His gaffer, his key grip (Michael Kenner) and all the toys to the backlot at CBS Radford for us for three days, and a stage at Panavision for one day.Once again, the job was "figure out everything that needs to get done (see list above) and get it done." I did, and we did, and that short got into Sundance, won an Honorable Mention and went on to be a marginally famous short in the early digital world. Since it was all done for free, I missed Sundance, which was a bummer; but that's kinda how it was.The next year, I was working at my "real job" as a post-production coordinator and New Line Cinema, and was spending a lot of time with really talented post production professionals. Another group from Filmmakers Alliance had shot much of their first feature, and got stuck with how to finish it (well) and get it into festivals or sold.Once again, I stuck my hand up, for free, and said "I'll help." We spent another year and a half in post-production, editing, test-screening, even writing and filming new scenes to help fix some story issues; and doing very, very careful sound effects and sound mixing. That attention to detail in the sound went a long way to covering up some of the challenge that came to shooting a feature on PAL mini-DV (yeah, that again, but it was the best there was that wasn't film at the time).We submitted the rather arty and dark film, called Solitude, (Solitude (2002) all over the place. Turned down just about everywhere, then got into a somewhat notable festival at the time in NYC called GenArt. It was great for the ego and started the relationship that eventually ended up in a sale of the films distribution rights almost two years later. The festival only picked seven films, and threw a huge party for each one; and premiered at a huge theater just off Times Square on 42nd street. )Two years later, we had shown at AFI Fest in Los Angeles, and finally had a teeny distributor who "bought" the rights to distribute the film - for I think around $5k. The writer-directors were an amazing husband and wife team who put themselves through the wringer, mostly self-financing all the bare minimum costs (which did not include actually paying *anyone* working on the film) on credit cards. Needless to say, as far as I know it's never made enough to have covered what it cost even at that level.Another couple of years later, apparently I had not learned my lesson about endless "working for free," when a close friend of mine set out to make his own film. This time, we pioneered another new technical process by shooting on the new Panasonic DVX100, in 24p, and up-rezzing everything in post to create an HD intermediate we used to finish the film.We got a script we liked, we cast it, and we took a team of about 25 cast and crew from LA to Yuma, Arizona for about 18 days to shoot a road-trip/thriller. We financed it with a bunch of the director's personal credit, and about $30k from friends as investors - so we headed for the desert with a truck full of gear, an RV and about $75k in budget (we would go on to spend another $125k or so in pickups and post over the next 16 months).Once again, this was about doing the work. From the SAG low-budget actors agreements, to schedules, to crew to hotels, to coordinating road closures with police, to emptying the toilet from the production RV we were using to attempt to escape the 115 degree heat (and the ONLY bathroom for the crew to use while we were out shooting all day); this was a pretty grueling and gruesome production experience. Pro tip: if you ever find yourself having to empty the toilet tank of an RV, check the drain hose for holes or dry rot BEFORE releasing the contents of said toilet tank.When we went into post on this film, called "Family,"(Family (2006)) we first cut a trailer, and I built a sales website for it and we went to the film market at AFM where we distributed DVD's with the trailer and website on it. We made a few good relationships and proceeded to work on editing the picture. After about 6 months, we did some test screenings, then realized we had some holes we had to patch up, and went back to Yuma to shoot 3 days of pickups.By that spring, we'd managed to have a few sales agents/independent distributors offering to buy rights. We went with the team at Curb Entertainment, and over about an 18 month period, they were able to generate enough sales that our investors made all their money back, plus a bit. The sales were never enough to pay any of the crew or producers the salaries that had been deferred.At the end of the day, on the feature side, I've been super lucky to have completed and sold to market two indie films and that's something I'm pretty proud of.By 2005, my producing skills had gotten good enough that the TV business came calling with actual paid producing opportunities. From 2005-2012, I worked in a variety of producing functions for a wide range of shows. From Field Producing, to Line Producer to Exec in Charge of Production on hundreds of hours of reality and game shows.When you're really producing, the hustle to get the next gig is almost endless, though there are times when you'll have more opportunities than time.It's fairly thankless, except for once in a while meeting someone you may admire for their talents or maybe getting an award or a pretty good party thrown for your crew. There's no such thing as paid vacation. There's no such thing as a "sick day," and there's no such things as paid benefits or retirement packages (at least in the United States).You're often first on the set, and last to leave. You will face impossible tasks like "we need a helicopter, here in the middle of the English countryside, tomorrow, and still be on budget." You will face unexpected situations like "the actress and the hairstylist have decided they don't like the creative choice, and they are not coming out of the trailer."If you're in a relationship, you will face "I never get to see you," "When are you coming home?" "We need to go see the doctor, how do we pay for it?" or classics like "You're supposed to be wearing body armor, what do you mean you don't have any? I'm going to kill you when you get home if you don't get killed where you are."It took a long, long time and becoming a dad to recognize Producing wasn't going to allow me to live the kind of life that correctly (for me) prioritized the important parts of my life. I mostly left producing in late 2010, with a few individual stints in 2012/2013.It's strange in a way, because I left producing to build tech companies (which is a whole other story); which in a way is very relatable as a producer. It is about choosing something creative that you hope will connect with an audience sizable enough to make it worthwhile, then executing on delivering the product to market.I won't say it's any more stable as a life choice than producing; though I definitely get to see more of my family and it's not nearly as physically demanding as being on set 14-16 hours a day.At the end, I'm really grateful for the experiences and some of the lasting friendships made with very talented individuals along the way and without this exact path I never would have been in the perfectly suited place I am today working on tech that is heavily geared for media. Now it's time for Act II :)
