ThisCold Storage RoomIt was year 2014My firm was appointed by SBI to do stock valuation of a big pharmaceutical company(assume X) as a part of Business Transfer Agreement (BTA) in accordance with Corporate Debt Restructuring (CDR)In accordance with CDR terms X company should transfer one of its unit located at remote area in Maharashtra to another company. (assume Y). (X company was making huge losses,negative cash flow etc.)Whatever company X receives from Y company should be used to pay back the loan taken from SBIThere were three Audit Firm involved in valuation process.My Firm -Appointed by SBI (lender)Deloitte Haskins & Sells-Appointed by Y companyA Hyderabad based firm -Company's Internal AudiorWe formed two teams comprising of atleast one member from each audit firm.(mind you , all were articled assistant)It was a very hot day of July. We had completed half of the verification then we reached at place which I had never seen in my life.That was cold storage room. The temperature sign board displayed a range (2 to 4) degree celsius. After seeing the range temperature I got excited. I just wanted to rush to the cold storage room to get relieve from this hot sunny day.But unfortunately the company's person which accompanied us said that only one person could accompany him in cold storage.So we decided to go in sequence that is first I will go then deloitte's articled assistant (AA) then the internal auditor's AA.(so that everyone one gets chance to go inside)I went in with a pen in one hand and stock sheet in another hand. The moment I entered it felt heaven. It gave immediate releif to me. I was like on top of mount Everest.The company person told me it would take atleast 30 minutes to verify the stock in cold storage. (worth of Rs. 7.5 crore)But after 4 minutes of being there I started shivering. My hands started trembling, I could not hold pen, finger started crawling, I could not tolerate any more and rushed out.Next turn was of Deloitte's AA. I told him its amazing inside the cold storage , you just go inside I have recevied a call, I will attend the call and join you.Then what ? I left the place and took that Internal Auditor's AA along with me for next storage room (off course not cold storage) and prayed for the delloite's AA.Next day, deloitte's AA did not turn up for audit. When asked about him they said that he has got Cold, Fever, body pain etc.I remained silent.I think this was one the craziest experience I had during my articleship tenure.Image Source: Google

Couple of weeks back, I attended an opening ceremony of my friend's office in Mumbai. It was scheduled at 6 pm. I was surprised to see myself reaching on time, but this another friend of mine came by little over 7 pm. He was about to get married soon, so I started pulling his legs by asking real reason for being so late.He said he had to submit his passport application that afternoon which took the time. Another 10-15 minutes we talked and he received a call on his mobile from unknown number. Conversation beteeen him and that other Mr X went like this.He: Hello!X: Hello Sir, we are looking for your home address, can you please tell us the landmark?He (bit tensed): May I know who are you and why do you need this information?X: Police. We have come to verify your address you mentioned in your passport application.He (in utter shock): Anh? Mai khud apne ghar nahi pohocha aur aap verification karne aa gaye? (Even I have not reached my home and you managed to come for verification?)Hearing that, we burst into laughters and I think, on the other end that Mr X too had a good laugh on his sarcastic response. Needless to say we spent rest of the evening discussing on changing landscapes of India.P.S. I wish they are doing the same when someone reports a crime or calls for emergency.

I always made a binding agreement with my substance abuse clients before taking them on, which included showing up on time in a clean and sober condition. This agreement we both signed and the contract between us taken very seriously. We both agreed to be sober when we started a session.If a client broke the agreement, I treated it for what it was, a serious breech of contract and suggested before the client come back for another appointment they go to 30 AA meetings in 30 days and bring verification they actually attended.A client who tests your commitment to their sobriety but breaks it would not get another session with me until they go to the meetings, with the further proviso they secure and work with a sponsor and complete at least the first step of 12 in the AA program.To attempt therapy with a drunk client is an exercise in enabling, which any AA member will tell you is no different than the spouse who enables by going down to the liquor store to avoid the possibility of his getting a DWI.Alcoholics are rule breakers who push the limits and showing up for a session drunk is a way to test the limits just to see. Most are not bad people but in their using days they act like children who must have rules and anyone who goes along with their game is an enabler, pure and simple.I called a cab for the client and left him with the optimistic farewell: “See you in 30 days.”Once I called the police on a client, drunk and who raced out of my office to jump into her car and race away to be met down the road by officers I alerted to her presence on the highway. Already on court orders by a judge to complete my program, she showed up months later, chastened but sober, ready to start my program with a full 120 days of enforced sobriety, courtesy of the county. She got sober but it took a good dose of reality on the work farm. I saw her three years later and we laughed about it together. She was still sober.
