So I will attempt at elaborating an answer to the question of “How does one follow the Tao?”, keeping in mind that, to ask such question, if not careful, can lead to completely distancing oneself from the Great Way, missing it.But first, i must emphasize that, careful reading and contemplation of the Tao Te Ching is the best way to set on the course of finding the Tao, which is something i will atempt to do in this answer.First, one must accept that The tao that can be told / is not the eternal Tao (1), thus any intellectual understanding by means of labeling and rationalizing the True Way is ultimately futile and imperfect. All named things are particular, yet the Ultimate is transcendent and all-encompassing. So Lao Tzu places emphasis on intuitiveness and experience, which grant true wisdom of the ultimate reality. If one is to find the Way, one must not depend on memorization and understanding of texts, instead one must follow certain life principles with the goal of achieving a personal transformation that will allow the individual to, eventually, merge with the Ultimate Way. However, we shouldnt disregard brief and limited discriptions of the Tao, or the way it manifests, because these help us look for it.So in my answer, i will try to explore and bring to light two elements in the Tao Te Ching: doctrines/life principles (which allow for personal transformation that gets us in touch with/atunes us to the Way) and pointers (brief imperfect descriptions of the Tao in hopes of helping us look for it). This last one may seem contradictory, however, if you want to find the Tao, become it - become more alike with that which you search to unite with, thus adopt the descriptions of the Tao to yourself, mold yourself in its image, and eventually it will flow through you. “Strive to resemble/embody that which you search to unite with”.Doctrines/Life PrinciplesThe most important life principles that one must embody to become closer to the Tao, are expressed in the doctrines of: Tao and Te, Wei Wu Wei, Naturalness, Ying & Yang, Qi and the Three Treasures or Three Jewels.Tao and TeWhile the Tao, or the Way, is something passive, immanent, transcendent, all-prevasive yet subtle, Te is its active manifestation - by means of Virtue. To achieve the Tao one must always search to cultivate and strenghten virtues, overcoming vices, a process based on a long jurney of introspection and self-improvement.All creatures and all of life are an expression of the Tao. Ultimately, it is a Way leading to Harmony; however, to achieve it, each individual must go through life and experience its difficulties - and when facing them, one develops the needed character-tools, while renouncing the bad traits that hold us down. It is the process of self-cultivation - development of personal virtues and overcoming of vices - that atune us to the True Way.The process of self-improvement is just as important as the acquisition and strenghtening of personal virtues, through which we learn more about ourselves. It is the recognition of a greater force or principle that brings the whole to harmony, that flows constantly and effortlessly (which is the Tao). As such, it is avoiding disturbing the Natural Way. “It is cutting wood through the place easier to cut”.Wei Wu Wei is also allowing for complete self expression when needed, and once it’s finished, remaining in the quiet space that comes after. In this process, one doesnt resist the natural urge of our being.One of the best chapters that express Wei Wu Wei and how to come to the Tao would be this one, Chapter 23Express yourself completely,then keep quiet.Be like the forces of nature:when it blows, there is only wind;when it rains, there is only rain;when the clouds pass, the sun shines through.If you open yourself to the Tao,you are at one with the Taoand you can embody it completely.If you open yourself to insight,you are at one with insightand you can use it completely.If you open yourself to loss,you are at one with lossand you can accept it completely.Open yourself to the Tao,then trust your natural responses;and everything will fall into place (2)Open yourself to the Way, the way things are, to the way all flows, and let yourself be dragged by this same current, without holding on, and there you will find the Tao.From this chapter we can also establish the formula of Wei Wu Wei being based on openness/non-resistance to reality, oneness with it, embodiment of it, which allows for the acceptance of the reality of being, coming into harmony with our surroundings, and in this, we will find the Tao.NaturalnessTo attain naturalness, one has to identify with the Tao; this involves freeing oneself from selfishness and desire, and appreciating simplicity. (3)This involves the process of returning to the primordial state that is inate to you; By understanding yourself and seeing yourself as you are, letting go of other peoples expectations and ideals, you can see yourself for who you trully are - and that entails your potentials and strenghts, your true needs and pleasures; Simplicity is important - let go of all distractions and things that excite you, that excite your mind and the senses, keeping you in a constant state of becoming something or someone else; instead renounce all that, and be at one with yourself; be boring and silent for some time, let the mud in the water settle, until you can see clearly through the water.Do the things that you actually need and want, even if no one else cares;Find the needed serenity that will ground you in reality, thus distinguishing futile desires and actions, that only disturb the course of your life, and see what you have a natural tendency to strive thowards, investing into that path.To stay true to oneself is important; often times with the excitement of certain episodes of our lives, we forget the things that are trully meaningful to us, letting them slip out of our lives, and then we regret it, feeling incomplete.Also, observe Nature, its rhythms, its expressions; understand them and learn from them. The Tao manifests itself in Nature. Use these manifestations to acquire virtues. Learn from them.For instance, about water:The supreme good is like water,which nourishes all things without trying to.It is content with the low places that people disdain.Thus it is like the Tao. (4)Or when it comes to change; imagine the principle or force of change is embodied by the strong wind which blows through the forest; the hard branches break, by offering resistance to it, but the grass, which is flexible and bends, survives after having been faced by the wind. Face change the way the grass faces the wind - let it pass, let it happen.Ying and YangThere is a lot to be said about Ying and Yang, but i wont expand on it much in here. However to follow the Tao, is to embody Harmony with all things; a harmony that can be achieved by knowing the poles of opposites and how they create, sustain and anahiliate each other, rhythmically changing and fading one into another almost like in a dance.This is something we often ignore - we only focus on one pole and ignore the other, some times we even reject the other. We want to work without having to rest to feed our deluded ambicions. However, one cannot work without rest, and rest is only pleasant after work - activity and passivity create and sustain eachother; light creates the shadows, but the shadows delimit the light.Find and understand the different poles of opposites that create your life, understand the importance of both, and find the harmonious middle path between them - combined, the opposites (passivity-activity, ying-yang, Tao-Te) govern life and make it dynamic and fluid, allowing the great Tao to be expressed. Thus, if you want it to be expressed through yourself, find that Path, by means of understanding and calibrating the Ying and Yang principle in your life.QiQi has become a very popular and fundamental aspect of Taoist practice. And altough it is hard to discuss it without delving into the metaphysics, in this answer, altough i am not disregarding the metaphysical aspect of Qi, i will not bring it up.To make it easier and more accessible, lets consider Qi (or Chi) first and foremost as vitality. Is there any similarity between Taoism philosophy and existentialism?
I’m not an expert on this subject but i’ll try my best in this answer. Please offer correction if something’s wrong.Existentialism is close to Nihilism in a certain way. It addresses the reality of human existence considering individual human beings as being usually driven by the concepts of intrinsic unchanging value, meaning and purpose regarding the various aspects of their lives. However, the nihilists and existentialists argue, nothing in the Universe actually guarantees the validity of such position.In a time that valued rationalism and the scientific method, humans’ that lived convinced about the existence of some essence, meaning or value intrinsic to their existence and thus the world, faced, through a rational assessment and empirical investigation, that the Universe, in its’ trully observable nature, is rather cold, uncaring, mechanic… meaningless. There is no seeming way to trully determine, once and for all, what are the true, intrinsic values and purposes that guide and sustain the Universe and the life contained in it.So this posits two problems: amongst all the religious and philosophers - who’s right and who’s wrong? And what should humans do?In regards to the fomer question: no one… it doesn’t matter - none of the worldviews grounded in metaphysical models could actually be acceptable because of their lack of conformity to both scientific and rational investigation.So, what should humans do? Well, existentinalists, unlike many nihilists, see Man as a rational being, possessing free will. These two aspects, that define the Human, are fundamental paradigms in Existentialism.Yes, through reason, Man realized the seeming bleak meaninglessness of his own existence. There is no value, or meaning that can be considered trully objective. All that can be deemed essence, is imputed by Man unto the material. But trully, reality is the material phenomenal world - mechanical and blind. Thus, existence preceeds essence, and not the other way around.This conflicting reality, the realization of the lack of any meaning in life, and the confusion and anguish that arise as a result of such in the rational human being who endlessly seeks to make sense of the world, is an existential crisis. Up until that point, ones’ whole life was built upon abstract concepts that served as to interpret reality, but when those concepts fall apart, having realized how artificial they were, and reality is seen naked, there’s a feeling of hopelessness, dread, apathy… if there’s no value to anything, or true transcendent purpose, what is the point of life? Ofcourse, being aware of ones own mortality, the changing flux of life, the lack of control of phenomena… don’t help either, but rather pour gas on the fire of human anguish.But Existentialists seek to establish the existential crisis as ultimately a good experience. In a way, i would say, it’s like a purging of the fabricated ignorance that Man made to protect himself from the reality of life.It’s a good thing because, at this point, Man can take responsability for ones’ life and experience. Through free will, intellect, reason, understanding better the true nature of the phenomenal world, Man can generate his own meaning, his own motivations, aspirations, goals, desires… there really is little stopping him! Ones’ happiness, fulfilment, satisfaction… all come down to the life we choose to live, granted that we strategically and most honestly design it for ourselves. The key concept in here is personal responsability.The rational human can generate and impute his own meaning unto reality, living life on his own terms.Within the process of generating meaning, some argue for the importance of a religious approach - that meaning must include God in it (like Kierkegaards’ position).From Existentialism later on emerged a sub-branch - Absurdism. Developed by notable philosophers of differing periods, such as S. Kierkegaard and A. Camus, it’s a form of Existentialism that deals the a new very fundamental concept related to existence - the Absurd.The Absurd arises from a fundamental discrepancy between Mans’ inate need and search for (inherent) meaning and value, and the complete absence of it in the world. Furthermore, Absurdists challenge more traditional Existentialists on the prospect of making ones own meaning. In a way, here, it can be argued that the existential crisis isn’t really a one time thing that can just be overcome by generating ones’ values and meaning. Man is still aware of his mortality, and is still facing a cold Universe, thus he can’t help but feel that, all this meaning making, is a mere distraction…The solution offered by Absurdists, can be shortly presented as: 1) accept the Absurd - recognise and respect the absurdity of life, how death just anulls all the effort, how sacrifice ultimately makes no difference… however, 2) rebel against it! Yes, making your own meaning won’t be a solution that once implemented, allows you to cope well with life for the remainder of it. Difficulties, doubts, loss, mortality… will come up over and over again, shaking you, pushing you into Nihilism, making you wonder if anything even matters… But, much like Sysyphus, once the giant rock you’ve been pushing to the top of the mountain rolls back down, you have to find strength, and even a ridiculous, stupid simple joy, to get up and keep going, pushing it to the top once more. And in the process, you have to find the compromise of understanding intellectually the Absurdity of living in a meaningless world, all the while rebelling against it!This is ofcourse a rather crude description of Existentialism, done for the sake of contemplation on the question at hand.Now, lets consider Taoism.There are definitely more discrepancies than similarities.Although Taoism has a wide range of differing sects, literature and doctrines, i can bring to light some fundamental themes found in the Tao Te Ching and Chuang Tzu.Taoism focuses on the concept of Tao - the fundamental Way of Nature and the Universe. It is a Law intrisic to all aspects that create a complex web of relations between all componenets of the Universe. All things are interconnected and interdependent. And while seemingly every aspect acting on its own, each is inserted in a wider, expansive reality - that is self-regulatory, always aiming at harmony.The Taos’ active expression is Te - Virtue. The Tao is the Way of Life and Virtue. The highest of Virtues is tied to Wei Wu Wei.See, because the ultimate Truth is the Tao, all things follow the Right Way, seemingly on their own, often involving spontaneity. It is when things go against the Tao, that difficulties arise. And the way something or someone goes against the Great Way? Mainly it’s through resistance… in the form of stuborness, attachment, clinging, carelessness… which arise from lack of Virtue.Thus Wei Wu Wei gains its importance. Translated as Doing Not-doing, it relates to a way of doing things that is unattached, dispassionate, elegant, smooth… it is a way of doing something without doing it, in the sense that, the individual has such an open receptive mind, that it’s clear of an endlessly intrusive concept of self and other, that it doesn’t constantly get hung up on something or fased from the present moment experience. It is a mind that allows for change to happen and imperfection to be manifested, because that’s the way things are, but because it doesn’t revolt, the individual, with a disciplined mind, aligns with the fundamental Way.It is in doing so that many experiences of suffering, fear, confusion… are astranged. And once fundamental Virtues are cultivated - such as patience, moderation, loving-kindness, simplicity - the Tao begins to better flow through the individual.Taoism doesn’t promote passivity as a reluctance to engage in the world, rather, it teaches that the world is great the way it is, and instead of endlessly walking in circles judging it, trying to change it, resisting the changes it itself proposes, generating confusion and sorrow from all this, and the repeating the process, Man can, little by little, cleanse his mind, become receptive, let go, allow life to express itself through and around him the way it does, thus becoming more and more intune with his own true nature.Ultimately, through self-cultivation, Man can transcend the limited conditioned expressions of the Tao (its manifestations) and realize the Ultimate Purity, achieving immortality.Again, there’s a lot that can be said about Daoism, but lets see if some fundamental comparisons between Daoism and Existentialism can be made at this point.I was gonna elaborate a rather detailed analysis and comparison of some key topics of each philosophy, but i am first going to offer a more brief concept that establishes the difference between Taoism and Existentialism. Maybe later on, i’ll offer a more in depht analysis.What distinguishes Existentialism and Taoism, for the most part, is that Existentialism seeks to put Man above external reality, while Taoism introduces Man as one of the parts of the larger reality and its functions and laws.Existentialism, i’m guessing being rooted in Nihilism, seeks to find ways to stop making Man a victim of his condition. It seeks to instil a proactive, responsible relation to life, calling the shots, and creating ones own reality within the confines of possibility. Man himself sets out what kind of life is best to live for himself - ultimately, he has no grand purpose or direction or value - it’s just mere existence of a rational feeling animal, that having experienced the dread of knowing his own mortality and uncaring nature of the surroundings, seeks intellectual comfort and resolve to make his experience while alive the best one possible.Taoism considers that Mans’ problems arise from a disconnect from the natural order of things. Once Man begun to rationalize his own ego, his own conceptual values, seeking a perverted form of satisfaction taken out of Nature but regulated by himself, he upsets the fundamental balance of existence, and generates a sorrowful confusion for himself.Existentialists often see Mans’ problems as arising from the nature of existence, and seek to use some aspects of said nature (free will, rationality) to overcome or oppose that same nature, in a way. A rational Man suffers because he’s aware of his mortality, but can also use his rationality to create a more fulfiling life. In Taoism, however, the problem won’t be solved until thinking is substituted by insight into the true nature of existence, and death is accepted and respected as a fundamental aspect of Tao, much like life.So no, i don’t think there are any similarities between Taoism and Existentialism. Mainly because they’re based on two very different premises of seeing reality and Mans’ place in it.One of the biggest common aspects ends up being responsability, but even then, in Taoism, this responsability is directed at self-cultivation as to generate more detachment and acceptance of life, while in Existentialism is directed at active efforts of going against the fundamental nature of existence.

Is there a connection that I missed?
