PDF Editor FAQ
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said "It is time that we pay people what they are worth." How will she do it?
If you have an adult or near adult that reads at a 6th grade level, has no work ethic, can’t follow directions and can’t stop looking at his phone long enough to complete a simple task, what is he worth? That’s not meant to be a rhetorical question. Someone is worth how much value they bring to an organization. They can bring that in expertise or how much they bring in industriousness.Sometimes I hire people. The plumber has expertise that I don’t have, and I need running water. So I pay him pretty much what he asks. And he asks what is the going rate. On the other hand, there are a lot of people in the workforce who don’t have skills that can add value to an individual like me or, in many cases, to an organization. What is their value? As a teacher, I routinely give students time to work on assignments in class, and these assignments are usually designed so every student can complete them if they are willing. Even if they’re not willing, I routinely move about the room checking progress and notice that some students won’t do the work.If I have a student who routinely draws titties and swastikas on worksheets rather than try to earn some points towards a passing grade, how much value will he bring to a business? $15/hr…$20/hr…$25/hr?Keep in mind that when an employee is being paid $15/hr, that doesn’t mean the business is paying $15/hr. They also have to pay things like Unemployment insurance, workers compensation. So the actual amount the business pays is more than what the employee receives.Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t know what value an individual can bring to an organization, so she has no idea what “someone is worth.”
Is it okay to be highly sensitive?
Is it okay to be highly sensitive?First, the good news: yes, it is OK to be sensitive and empathetic. :-)I know from experience that being sensitive is a huge hassle sometimes, but it also has its perks. If you play your cards right, you can even make a decent living off of being sensitive and empathetic (such as social work, sales, team-leading, or basically anything that requires you to work with people and understand their motivations and feelings). Now, I’d like to address a few of the other things you brought up.One thing I notice in your comment is that you seem to have a tough time setting personal boundaries. I’m assuming you find that difficult because you say you ghosted your therapist. It’s totally OK to tell a therapist “I would like to end our sessions.” Seems like you were so uncomfortable with the idea of saying that to them that you preferred not commuicating with them altogether, huh? I totally get that these conversations can be difficult, but I would like to give you some tools that make them a lot easier. There are a number of techniques you can use to set boundaries. For example, there’s a whole Quora topic about boundaries with lots of answers and tips on how to set personal Boundaries. An additional tool you can use in order to express your needs better is a four-step technique called nonviolent communication. You also say that you are caught in a bit of a worry cycle and sort of obsessively think about negatives, especially in the past where you can’t change them, and that you find it difficult to focus on positives. A lot of people are in that same boat with you, which is why there is an entire Quora topic dedicated to Worrying and how to stop it.You also say you’ve been having a hard time coping with your loss of hearing. That’s very understandable. I’m so sorry for your loss. What I imagine might be particularly hard to cope with is the social aspect: hearing is one of those senses that connect us to others. So, I imagine this is a huge change in the way you relate to others.Any loss of a sense or a limb is something that will take time, conscious effort, and building new habits to adjust to, and this one requires addressing the way you communicate. Something I was wondering about as I was reading is this:Are you part of a hard of hearing community or self-help group (online or off)?I have had some good experiences in the past with groups, so perhaps if you haven’t checked it out yet, maybe you could take a look and see if this kind of thing speaks to you? In the U.S. there’s HLAA State Organizations and Chapters, including specific social network presences for young people: Young Adult Social Network you could also look into if you are not in the U.S.And finally, I wanted to ask how you feel about starting therapy with a different kind of therapist? There are different ways of doing therapy. For example, there is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, which deals with thought patterns (such as worrying) and behaviour patterns (such as ghosting) directly. There are specific tools in this therapy form that you can use to work on your taking control, your self-respect, and your hating being in this situation. There are licensed behavioural therapists out there, some even specialise in emotional coping with disability. To give you a little example of what this could look like, here’s a worksheet on distress tolerance that involves radial acceptance: DBT Distress Tolerance Skills (Worksheet) | Therapist Aid.maybe it can give you some ideas on how to cope a little better with your situation….Best wishes with all this.
What happens if a recruit shows up to the military boot camp that knows more about the military than their drill instructor in every way possible by studying it on the internet and reading hundreds of books about it?
Let’s say I was a drill sergeant (never had the desire to become one, sorry) and a Private Smith arrives and informs me that he knew more about the military than I did because he read about it on the Internet.I would tell Private Smith to report to me in my office in the correct military manner, as if I was an officer. (In the Army, “report to an officer” is a task they teach you in Basic and they test you on at the end of course.) When he fucked it up, which he would do because they don’t put small things like that in books, I would then give him a demonstration of the proper way then have him do it again. Once he’d properly reported, I would hand him an M50 protective mask and direct him to disassemble the mask, name every part, reassemble the mask, fit it to his face, then properly don the mask within nine seconds. (That’s also a required skill if you expect to graduate from basic training.) If I didn’t have an M50 handy, any piece of boring military equipment would do. Maybe I’d give him one of my boots and have him fill out a DA Form 2404 (Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet… they don’t teach this form in Basic but they really should, because you’re going to fill out about a million of them in your time in the Army.) on it. When he fucked that one up too, I would tell him, in a calm, non-drill-sergeant voice, that I think it’s great he did all that homework before coming to basic - but there are a lot of things about the military that you won’t learn until you’ve been in it a while.
