What are some things that people who live in places with brutally low temperatures know, that the rest of us don't?

The first thing that popped into my head upon reading this question was…It is Beautiful here, and we LOVE the cold!I’m from Minnesota. It’s rare to hear of a person living here that doesn’t love it. The above picture was taken on my front porch the end of last Winter.I had fun reading many of these answers last night and loved all the fantastic tips that so many were sharing. You cold livin’ folk taught me a new trick or two…so Thank you!I laughed at myself that, in my mind, I skipped right over the practical aspects of living here, and went straight to the physical beauty. I guess I can be thankful this isn’t a dating site then?Anyway, I thought I’d share just a few beautiful (outward,) aspects of living in the cold ; along with a few ((perhaps meaningless to you,)tips or, things to be aware of in the brutal cold.)I woke up a few hours ago now, and I checked the temp, per my phone, as usual. (Do people in warmer climates do this first thing, too?)( Let me know!))The temp was -14, Fahrenheit, and with the wind chill it said it felt like -36 degrees. Not terrible, but cold enough to make a couple quick mental notes about my dogs for today:Something I realized from living in the extremes of weather, is that your Dogs can be quite sensitive to the cold. Jags is between 12–13 years of age now, and has arthritis. When it gets really cold…he needs to avoid using stairs. If he stays out more than 2–3 minutes on these really cold, windy days, it’s as if his legs just shut down and don’t work. His muscles, quite literally freeze up.This is my old boy, Jags. He’s a sweetheart. And for my other dog?2. I have to make sure Ella is watched closely outside. She loves to hunt. When it gets below zero around here, the Voles, (a disgusting rodent related to the mouse but much bigger,) start to surface. Rodents can’t move very well underground in frozen earth. They rise to the surface to find warmth in the snow. Ella, my young and playful dog, knows how to feel the vibration of them underfoot and will ‘pounce’ until they come out of the snow that they’re warming in.She then catches them, throws them up in the air, watches them run around for a bit, and then eats them. I know, I know…why tell us this?Eating Voles and getting sick is a fairly common concern with hunting dogs around here. She’s actually gotten sick quite a few times from eating too many, or perhaps a bad one. Yes, I agree…this is disgusting.(In Ella’s defense…she had been a stray before we adopted her ; likely she had to hunt to survive.)My name is Ella. I like to eat rodents that I shouldn’t.For me, I feel like cold climates are a good fit for introverts. more at ease living in a cold climate. It’s so peaceful and tranquil.—I just asked my 20 year old daughter what she loves about living here, and then I shared what I had written thus far.She laughed at the ‘tranquil’ bit and reminded me that it wasn’t always like that! She told me that it may be moreso now because ‘we all’ (3 kids,) are quite self sufficient, now that they’re mostly grown. Then she sent me this:This is her youngest sister, (10 yrs ago.) We were at a outdoor parade with family and she was ready to go home.Oh yes…I must have conveniently blocked out the previous ten plus years:Being a mother with young children adds extra stressors in the cold climates:LayeringFighting with them to dress head to toe in outwear including boots, hat, scarf, and a face maskBreaking it to the kids that it’s too cold to go outsideMaking them ‘stay outside’ for ‘a little longer’, 5 minutes after they have banged on the door demanding they have to go ‘potty’Traveling anywhere for a sledding, skiing, or ice skating adventure…(you may need a bigger vehicle to hold all the ‘stuff’ .)Finding childcare when unexpected school closings happenI was also reminded of our trip with my middle daughter to the emergency room . Because, while at her cousin’s playing, they took turns seeing who could ‘leave their tongue’ on the metal fence post the longest. Guess who lost?——The beautiful side of having kids with snow and cold??* Snow Forts, Tunnels , Snowball fights and hours of creative, imaginative play (if warm enough.)And, there are plenty of opportunities for fun family time. Ice castles, Lighted Holiday Parades, and many Winter Themed festivals.A photo of an Ice Castle that my youngest took last year…Cheap or free family events like this are all around.I really love the outdoors, and all of nature.I just snapped this picture at sunrise this morning….right from my cozy spot in the kitchen!Anyway…I’ll leave you to go about your day. Thanks for reading, and seeing my few snapshots of ‘cold beauty’ living in the brutal cold. Here’s one last picture, contributed by my eldest daughter. It’s a tree that’s located on a walking trail nearby. And if you’re reading to the very very end, my youngest thinks it’s quite deplorable that :the dog pictures are before, and bigger than her picture…Enjoy your day!
