The great thing about Sunnyvale and Cupertino in the summertime is how quickly you can get some place else. Highlights are:San Francisco and the biking and beach going from Half Moon Bay up through the Golden Gate into Marin county.A 35 minute drive to Santa Cruz, Capitola, and any of the other beach towns just south of the Bay Area. A little farther south and you get to Carmel and Monterey.With a little more time you can get to Napa Valley for wine tasting, etc in about 90 minutes.Sunnyvale and Cupertino are pretty sleepy suburban towns. Sunnyvale has an up and coming town center where there's some restaurants and some box-store and department store shopping, but that's pretty much it. The best park in the area is Vasona in Los Gatos and the best downtown and shopping is in Palo Alto (15 minutes north) or Santana Row (ten minutes south) or downtown San Jose.The really cool thing about Sunnyvale is that its very accessible by Caltrain, which goes all the way through downtown San Jose, up to Mountain View and Palo Alto, and all the way into the south of Market area (SOMA) in SF, where you can walk anywhere on the east side in about two hours (or bike much faster).
