PDF Editor FAQ

My grandmother is from Kovno, Lithuania, yet I cannot find it on Google besides the Kovno ghetto. Is Kovno no longer a place and renamed as Kaunas after it's disturbing history?

Your grandmother is actually from Kaunas. This city has been know as Kaunas for at least 1000 years. Foreign governments and residents have renamed the city as they pleased or whatever fit their pronunciation better. It’s similar to how English speakers say Mexico, pronouncing the x as in “fax”, while the locals pronounce the x as the h in “hero”. However, the proper name is the one that the locals call themselves. The same goes for Kaunas.Heres a Wikipedia entry regarding the etymology of Kaunas:The city's name is of Lithuanian origin and most likely derives from a personal name.[12]Before Lithuania regained independence, the city was generally known in English as Kovno, the traditional Slavicized form of its name. The Polish name is Kowno[ˈkɔvnɔ]; the Belarusian name is Koўна, Kowna[ˈkɔwna]. An earlier Russian name was Ковно Kovno, although Каунас Kaunas has been used since 1940. The Yiddish name is קאָװנע Kovne, and the names in German include Kaunas and Kauen. The city and its elderates also have names in other languages (see Names of Kaunas in other languages and names of Kaunas elderates in other languages). The Lithuanian version of the same article backs that the Germans referred to this city as Kauen, Cawen and Kauwenpille. However, the name comes from a personal name, which, in turn, come from the word “kautis” (to fight) or “kaunus” (someone willing to fight). There are, of course, other theories.Kaunas today

Any idea what does the surname Fairfax mean in Emma (novel)? Fair means lovely, fax, no idea. I know what a fax is now. Or is fairfax without meaning? I don’t know English from the Regency.

In most fiction, including Emma, the names of the characters have as little meaning as the street number of addresses. The author chooses them for their ordinariness in context (e.g., Churchill rather than Raskolnikov or Kierkegaard) and to lend a bit of connotation (e.g., Jane suggests middle class; Fairfax suggests Scottish lineage). It seems somewhat unlikely Jane Austen would know the etymology of the surname Fairfax, which comes from fair (beautiful or light-colored) and feax (tresses of hair).

I watched a video about recovering permanently deleted files on my Mac. It said to use Recoverit from CocoDoc so, because I was in desperation mode, I immediately went there and realized it was a program I needed to purchase. I bit the bullet and bought it for $53. I got the program running and and the email with the registration code said that I had a 1-Year license. I was like, "ok!" We're good. We weren't. It said that I still needed to buy a license and that was going to cost $75. I was able to get a $15 discount with Honey and bought the advanced registration for it and it worked. I was able to connect my hard drive to the program so it could recover the deleted files. Unfortunately, I wasn't done with this headache. After recovering the files, the type of which were .MP4, I was unable to open or play any of the files, even when using VLC player. None of them were playable, even though there was said to be data in the files. Most of them had the proper amount of MB in them where I knew that they had information in them. When I checked CocoDoc. The biggest FAQ was why I couldn't play the files and they suggested that it was something wrong with the file and that it need to be repaired because it was corrupted. I googled software for that purpose and the first option available was... you guessed it... CocoDoc! When I downloaded that program, it proceded to tell me that I needed to buy a license for that as well. I closed it out and forgot about it. I'll NEVER use this program again. All they are doing it reaching for your money. I'm aware it's a business but DAMN! That's just over the top! The worst part is that I'm still NO closer to getting the files I needed. And there's NO ONE able to help. Their online chat feature is USELESS! Won't take me to a real person AT ALL! Done!
