Are mothers-in-laws really that bad or are they just overhated?

It's the way you look at the things.l am a Dil to my 80 years mil and mil to twenty eight years daughter in law. So I think I am qualified to write this answer. According to me they are over hated.Reason 1.From the childhood girl is warned 'all your tantrums are here only, once you get married your mil will set you right'!2. You can't wear these things in in-laws house! you can't sleep like this in in-laws house! you can't eat whenever you want in in-laws house.! ... blah blah..The list goes on…Unknowingly in her mind mother creates an unknown fear about another mother. She forgets same thing is happening in all houses too. So tomorrow she also will get a daughter in law thinking same about her.A girl who will grow with this kind of mind set obviously thinks mil is a monster. Who likes monsters? In the society bad behaviour, negativity is more glorified in the name of creating awareness. A mil who looks after her Dil as daughter never come in news. A harassing mil immediately creates a sensation. Negative things create more impact on mind than positive things. You remember those things forever. We think we are cautioning girls but creating fear and hatred in their minds before her marriage itself. Then with what state of mind a girl enters in-laws house?Lot of biassed and mind filled with prejudice. Can she see anything neutral?Same words told by mom and Mil will sound to her with different meanings.adding to that new house, new environment.Any New thing takes time to adjust. New homes, new job, new city, everything. But you find Those are natural accept it thinking ‘Will take time' to get used to it.‘But in ‘in-laws house' we see same thing with ‘inverted commas' then the problem starts. We expect over night they all should accept it.I am not an exception. How I handled the situation is..I learnt I should never involve neither my husband nor my son in to this Tu Tu Mey Mey. I implimented it.If you try to handle the situation rather than individual no person is bad.Generally Dil is younger than mil so overreact for every thing. Young blood! If you learn to ignore the person and handle the situation you won't end up hating anyone.Especially Dil expects her husband should support her, but mil expects the same too.Fortunately I came from a big joint family. So I know. Mil energy levels will be falling down. Just initial two three years they roam around ordering, showing authority. I Just don't react with words.Unless she is an abnormal monster mother, no son will like to hear anything about his mother. And what I am expecting from my husband? Just he should support me in every thing? I only decide what he should do? If he also decides same thing about me? If he says behave like this! talk like this! I don't like. So I fought my own battle. I never hid behind my husband. Never put him into a position to decide whom he wants? Me or his mom? Either answer will break his heart permanently. I love my husband. I can't see him unhappy. At the same time I can't be unhappy. So first thing. I stopped listening to my co sister's complaints about my Mil. I know those are always one-sided stories.I never know what is the other side of the story. What they did to get such a response from my mil.So I will deal her directly and will form my opinion.2. Little patience will surely fetch dividends. Because no stupid mil will spend so much money on her son's Marriage to bring just a girl in the name of daughter in law to harass her later.3. Don't react immediately if you come to know anything about your mil. There must be a reason behind every behaviour.4. Try to change her slowly. Don't expect a sudden change. Because I also took so much time to come out of my family and it's influence, to adopt this new family called in-laws. This is my choice of family. I am not a timid to run away! I am her next generation. I am the change, new water in the stream.5. Have sympathy and recognise her hard work behind your wonderful husband. He didn't fall from sky. She is the hand behind his personality which you liked and married.6. Very few Husbands can manage their moms, then be prepared they can manage you too, Don't forget that!7. Keep and confine your anger to the incident not to the entire persons and for entire life.8. Remember a son separated from his mom, and a branch separated from tree are same. There is very less chance of survival. Mentally he will become insensitive. Later don't repent if he gives same cold behaviour to you. These things are applicable for normal persons. Not for Psychos. If you enter any Marriage with preformed opinions you will be disappointed. It's life. Normal world. Not ideal world. You can't clap with one hand.Mils also should reduce over interference, dictating, authority. Let the young Dil spread her wings. Let her fly. She is your nest's bird. Will come back to you.I can say mils are not that bad as projected. Definitely Dils are not that clever to handle them. If they can't win the power game solo they blame Husband , mil. It's justified because they are not as veterans as mils and definitely not experienced. They are young.
