PDF Editor FAQ

Why do bikes rev higher than cars?

A2A. I will admit, I don’t know. What I can offer is a qualitative answer, that in a former life I had quantified. I was on a ferry in Washington State, USA. One could go to an observation deck overlooking the engine. It was this massive 12 cylinder diesel engine. The rocker arms, or some subset thereof, was visible. You could SEE the firing order. There was a sign with the engine specifications: bore, stroke, running RPM, power output, etc. I wrote that down, just for fun. (Don’t quote me on the numbers, I’ve long since forgotten, but the pistons were over a foot in diameter, stroke measured in feet, about 50 RPM, or so. Exact numbers are wrong, but of the right order of magnitude.)Some time later I was helping a friend with his RC controlled model airplane. I looked at the engine spec sheet: bore, stroke, RPM. (Again, don’t quote me on numbers, but roughly 3/8 inch diameter, half inch stroke, 20,000 RPM.) A quick back of the envelope calculation showed that the big, slow ferry diesel engine pistons travel the same linear distance in a unit time as the tiny gasoline RC model airplane engine.Surely there’s some thermodynamics related to power output here. And don’t call me Shirley.

What should a visitor not do in Boston?

Here are some things to NOT do in Boston:Do NOT go to Downtown Crossing alone after dark. During the day it’s a great pedestrian shopping mall. Once the sun goes down it’s a predator’s dream. Perverts, homeless, muggers and worse own the place after dark. There is a subway station there called “Downtown Crossing”. Avoid it at all costs after dark. Seriously, this place could have been designed by Stephen King. Menace looms from every shadow. I work a homeless van in this area and I am always looking over my shoulder here.Do NOT go to the Franklin Park Zoo if your trip takes you to that area after dark. Built in a recovering ghetto section of Boston it’s a great place to go and spend the day but RUN AWAY when the sun goes down. And not down Talbot Avenue. You will DIE. I once was nearly carjacked here at the light on American Legion Highway and Blue Hill Avenue.Do NOT go anywhere near Columbia Ave, Upham’s Corner or Dudley Sq after dark. Actually, in many cases you’re better off not going there at all or if you do, don’t go alone. If you like seeing burning cars, tributes to victims of gangland slayings and drug deals on the corner, then this area is the place for you.Never, ever hang around City Hall Plaza after dusk. You WILL get robbed. You would think the cops would be all over that place but they aren’t. It’s owned by muggers, rapists and vagrants looking for a hangout. Do not ever use the back staircase across from the Holocaust Museum and boozy bars. Use the Fanueil Hall Staircase that goes to the Government Center T-Station. If you try to save 10 seconds by using the very wide and innocent looking back staircase you WILL be robbed, just as I was. There is no real reason for you to EVER find yourself in Mattapan unless you’re seeking hookers, drugs, guns, bad overpriced pizza or you’re tired of living. When my car was stolen and used as a battering ram to get into a liquor store, this is where they found it.Do NOT find yourself in the financial district around Summer Street alone after dark. There’s a famous bar called the Elephant and Castle that many people like to visit but there are many dark corners and alleys in this area and if you get drunk and lose your bearings then you’re in for some difficulty.Do NOT hang around Park Street station on the Common after 9PM. This is where the drug dealers, homeless, perverts and other evildoers hang out. I work on a homeless van and we use that area to assist them. I would be scared being there alone after dark. One night after 4th of July, around midnight, I had to run for my life past the station to the next entrance.Do NOT hang out around the Boston Garden North Station commuter rail after dark. The place smells like piss and there’s lots of places for creepy people to hide and jump out at you. Although much work has been done to make it less creepy, it’s still pretty creepy. I got mugged here once while scalping tickets for a “Hall and Oates” concert.Do NOT get lost in East Boston after dark. While it’s being rapidly rehabilitated for rich people, East Boston is still the enclave of gangs, violence and danger. There are many cool parks and historical things to see and do, but please don’t get caught out in the neighborhoods after dark. For the love of God don’t get lost on the west side of Charlestown. They’ll never find your body. You may want to go to the Bunker Hill Monument but always stay on the ocean side of the park and don’t wander into the housing projects unless you’re an idiot.Do NOT walk around with a beer in your hands anywhere except Fenway Park where the streets are open to that sort of thing.Do NOT lose your situational awareness around pedestrian crossings. Boston drivers are crazy and we don’t have traffic laws here - we have traffic “suggestions”. You’ll get hit for sure if you are not paying attention. On the plus side, you can get away with pretty much anything when it comes to crossing the street against lights and so forth, especially if you’re quick.Do NOT hang around South Station towards the end of the time when the trains stop running. Homeless and vagrants congregate here because there are many amenities for travelers. Eventually they are all chased out of the station but you don’t want to be too close to the time when they are chased out. If you miss your train, find a hotel quickly.Be careful if you happen to walk through the Fens, a series of paths through an overgrown park near the museums that is popular for its nature and wildness within the city but is also a gay-pick-up area and a place where people are sometimes assaulted and even killed.Unless you’re in the mob or have big hair you should probably avoid Revere except for the maybe Revere Beach and even then only go for awhile. Take the crowded Blue Line and watch the locals dump thousands of tons of trash on the beach and leave it in heaps. So sad. But if you go early enough and wear sneakers so you don’t get stuck by AIDs-infected hypodermic needles in the sand, then the beach is actually very pretty in the morning and worthwhile. If you really have to go to an urban beach than go to Hull by ferry or seriously, even Carson Beach is better than Revere Beach.Unless you like being chopped up and made into dog food there is no real reason to go to Chelsea. Ever. Although it does have some excellent ethnic restaurants you really need eyes in the back of your head, even during broad daylight. I once stopped here at a Dunkin Donuts and a hooker solicited me at the drive-thru. I had to spin my head around to make sure I wasn’t about to be sapped from my blind side.If you’re going to visit the Shirley-Eustis house in Roxbury, don’t go by car. Take the Red Line to Andrew then take a cab or walk and make sure it’s broad daylight. (Andrew Square is also kind of dicey though it’s getting better as the area gentrifies). If you take your car it will likely be stolen or vandalized, as mine was. A famous house, it is located in a very sketchy neighborhood and I suspect the tours end at 4PM because they don’t want you around there when things get rough.Don’t get ripped off on on Duck Tours. They are expensive and provide very little value for the money. There are much better, cheaper tours you can take - on and off the water. If you MUST go in the water for a tour, then take the Charles River Tour Company tours. It’s much better, 1/3 the price and there’s a full bar on the boat.Do NOT waste your money on the Codzilla ride. It’s a really expensive boat ride on a high-powered boat that supposedly takes you out into the harbor then, with loud music playing, they make lots of twists and turns. Only they don’t. Not really. Because the harbor is a no-wake zone they have to putt-putt to the area they use and then they rev it up for less than 3 minutes and then putt-putt back to the harbor. Do NOT waste your money on this rip-off. I will KILL you if you do it.Do NOT go to the New England Aquarium. It’s a total rip off. And the parking garage for the Aquarium is the most expensive in the city - 58 dollars to park. The only reason you would go there is desperation and if you do at least walk to the top floor to get a good view of the city.AVOID Fanueil Hall if you can. It’s really popular tourist destination with lots of shiny flashy things going on to look at but it’s a total rip-off designed to separate you from your money with mediocre food, overpriced drinks, lousy service and lots of begging. It CAN be entertaining if you keep your wits about you and your wallet at home AND there are often lots of pretty girls wearing sexy clothing but it’s also crowded. As Will Rogers said, “No one goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”Be careful walking the Esplanade at dusk. It is well worth the effort but creeps hang out there too.Be careful walking around Chinatown anytime. There are so many exotic restaurants and bakeries that you should go, but it’s a dirty place with narrow streets and kind of scary. It borders (and was part of) what was once called “The Combat Zone” for good reason and the vestiges and aura remain. Be careful. Know where you’re going. Don’t wander.Stay away from the area behind the Floating Hospital/Tufts and Melnea Cass Blvd. There’s almost no question you’ll be mugged any time, day or night. There’s no reason for you to be there. So don’t go there.Be careful around Symphony Hall and the Mission Hill District. There’s lots of stuff to see here so you will go to this area from time to time. While this area has cleaned up significantly in recent times, it’s still very Bohemian and “earthy”. There were gang wars here once upon a time. Many bad things happen here. Lots of drugs. If you want to find drugs or guns this is where you would hang out. Once, at a dry cleaner on Huntington Ave, the dry cleaner (a woman) offered me a blow job when I went to pick up an article of clothing. It was apparently “part of the service” they provided. No, I didn’t take up the offer.Don’t spend too much time on the Liberty Monument in Boston Common unless you’re looking to score heroin.Try to use the transit system as parking is hard and traffic is bad. Don’t drive if you can avoid it.Here is an interactive crime map of Boston:Boston Crime Map: How Safe Is Your Neighborhood? - The Scope
