The term “subconscious” has different meanings, so there are different answers to the question.First, subconscious can simply mean implicit, as in not explicitly said or verbalised. A feeling, for example, is implicitly experienced before we explicitly name it. And when we have an implicit emotional reaction going on, it affects our physiology and behaviour in ways that ‘leak’ signals to others. In this sense, we are implicitly (or ‘intuitively’) aware of many things and we also ‘communicate’ non-verbally without explicitly knowing or intending.Second, subconscious can refer to the many automatic processes that underlie mental activity but which in themselves do not become the focus of awareness. You can consciously remember eating breakfast, for example, but you're probably not conscious of how you retrieve that memory. In this case, there is no subtle communication with others; it's just the brain communicating with itself.Finally, in a combination of the above, some of our automatic mental processes can detect and perceive subtle cues, things which do not grab our conscious attention but which can nevertheless affect how we think or feel. An example would be how we can be ‘primed’ to react more favourably or less favourably to a product by subtle features in the environment. The ability to detect other people’s emotions through their subtle body signals is another example.So it’s not quite correct to say that our subconscious is aware on another level; rather, our whole mind operates at different levels, one of which is the level of explicit awareness (the ‘running commentary’), another is the implicit recognition of inner and outer signals without engaging explicit awareness, and another is the purely automatic processing machinery that is entirely unconscious.
