DR. JOSEF MENGELE "ANGEL OF DEATH"Some of the most enduring images of Auschwitz are the terrible scenes of the arrival of a transport of Jews to that concentration camp. Amid the chaos and despair stood a lone figure in an immaculate uniform and spotless white gloves inspecting the inmates and waving each in turn to one side or the other with his riding crop. To one side lay starvation, brutality, and deprivation but a chance for survival. To the other side, instant death in the gas chambers. The frightening figure making this decision was frequently, Dr. Josef Mengele, one of the doctors assigned to Auschwitz. He has come to symbolize the manner in which medicine became a tool for genocide.Mengele was born on March 16th, 1911, in Gunsburg, Bavaria, he was the eldest of three sons of Karl Mengele, manufacturer of agricultural machinery. Having the nickname "Beppo" he is described by those who knew him in his youth as a refined, serious student, and a young person with obvious intelligence and ambition. A promising student, he was sent to Munich in the 1920's, studied philosophy at Munich University and medicine at Frankfurt am Main University, where he was attracted to the racial theories of Alfred Rosenberg, the "philosopher" of National Socialism. As Mengele became an adherent of National Socialist ideology, he chose to concentrate on physical anthropology and genetics. He received his medical degree studying under Otmar von Verschuer, the director of the Institute for Racial Hygiene at the University of Frankfurt. The main emphasis of his research was the importance of heredity within the context of Nazi "race science." By the time his education had finished Mengele was a member of both the National Socialist Party and the SS. He was a fanatic anti-Semite and hated the Roma and Sinte (Gypsies) even more than he hated Jews.In 1928 it appeared that Mengele was destined for the academia. He published three articles, one of which was his dissertation in the Anthropological Institute at the University of Munich, and which was entitled "Racial-Morphological Examination of the Anterior Portion of the Lower Jaw in Four Racial Groups." His medical dissertation, published in 1938, was entitled "Genealogical Studies in the Cases of Cleft Lip-Jaw-Palate." The third article - entitled "Hereditary Transmission of Fistulae Auris" was published in conjunction with research done on the Lenz-Vershuer principle of "irregular, dominant hereditary process." In 1937 he was accepted into the Nazi party (card number 5574974). Upon being accepted into the Nazi party, he applied for membership in the SS in May 1938.However, the route to a professorship was interrupted in 1938-1939. He had three months military training in 1938, then began his military experience by serving six months with a specially trained mountain light-infantry rifle regiment.In June 1940, he was called up by the Wehrmacht. After serving one month, Mengele was transferred at his request to the Waffen SS, where he served in a reserve medical battalion from August 1st to November 4th, 1940. In January 1942, Mengele joined the medical corps of the Waffen SS Viking division as a medical officer. He was initially stationed in France, then served as a medical officer with several units in the invasion of the Soviet Union. For saving two soldiers from a burning tank under enemy fire, he was awarded the Iron Cross First Class and the Medal for the care of the German People. In the summer of 1942, Mengele was seriously wounded in fighting on the Don River. He received the Black Badge for the Wounded and was declared medically unfit for combat. Because he had acquitted himself brilliantly in the face of the enemy during the Eastern Campaign, he was promoted to the rank of captain.After being wounded and declared unfit for active service, Mengele was appointed to serve as a physician at Auschwitz in May, 1943. Mengele was not the chief physician at Auschwitz - that was Eduard Wirths - who appointed him chief physician of the Gypsy family camp. Mengele had his own laboratory block, independent financing, and a staff of inmate prisoner physicians whom he supervised.Descriptions of him indicate he was a very attractive man, always well groomed, and very aristocratic in stature. Prisoners remember him as the man with the riding crop in his right hand, who always wore immaculately clean uniforms and boots with a high polish.According to Dr. Hans Munch, a colleague of Mengele’s at Auschwitz, Mengele being the camp's most decorated doctor, arrived at the camp in a somewhat privileged position. He had been wounded on the Eastern front and was the recipient of an array of medals. It would appear that Mengele selected Auschwitz because of the opportunities there to continue his research.More than any other SS doctor assigned to Auschwitz, Mengele seemed comfortable with the harsh regime and murderous proceedings at the camp. Mengele was assigned, as were other doctors at Auschwitz, to supervise the "selections" of incoming transports. These selections determined which would be sent immediately to the gas chamber, and which would become prisoners in the camp. Unlike several of the other physicians, however, he seemed to glory in the power it gave him. Mengele carried his riding crop, with which he indicated life or death to the arriving prisoners. He often used the crop on the prisoners, and there are reports of his using his pistol to kill recalcitrant prisoners. Unlike the other physicians, Mengele was often present at the arrival ramps when he was not scheduled to be there to make sure that his orders that twins be sent to his "laboratory" were carried out.In an interview with the New York Times printed on May 5th, 1975, Dr. Ella Lingens, a former doctor-prisoner from Austria, described Mengele's attitude to selections: "Some SS doctors like Werner Rhoede, who hated his work, and Hans Koenig, who was deeply disgusted by the job, had to get drunk before they appeared on the ramp. Only two doctors performed the selections without stimulants of any kind: Dr. Josef Mengele and Dr. Fritz Klein. Dr. Mengele was particularly cynical and cold."Mengele, according to other doctors who served at Auschwitz, was in total agreement with the brutal administration of Auschwitz. He clearly believed that the prisoners were less than human and acted upon that belief. There are several known cases where Mengele personally murdered inmates either with his pistol or with fatal injections of phenol. The extent to which he deviated from the ethical standards of medicine is illustrated by his treatment of the 600 sick women he found in the "hospital" on his arrival at Auschwitz. He ordered all of them immediately sent to the gas chambers. But it was not just his administration of the medical department of Auschwitz that merited his inclusion as one of the worst criminals at Auschwitz. It was the experiments that he performed on helpless, inmates.The passion which drew Mengele to the arrival ramps was his "collection" of twins. Like his mentor, Dr. Verschuer, Mengele believed that if sets of twins without hereditary defects were carefully analyzed, a researcher could synthesize a complete and reliable determination of heredity and the relation "between disease, racial types, and miscegenation." This research was enthusiastically supported by Dr. Verschuer who arranged for Mengele to receive financial aid for his work.When the convoys arrived, soldiers scouted the ranks lined up before the boxcars, hunting for twins and dwarfs. Mothers, hoping for special treatment for their twin children, readily gave them up to the scout. Adult twins, knowing that they were of interest from a scientific point of view, voluntarily presented themselves, in the hope of better treatment: so did dwarfs. More than a few siblings were able to masquerade as twins, and fraternal twins pretended to be identical twins.According to Dr. Miklos Nyiszli in "Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account," twins provided the perfect experimental specimens. One could serve as a control while the other endured the experiments. It was well known in the camp that when a twin went to the infirmary, he/she never returned and that the other twin disappeared too. Shots of phenol were used to kill the second twin.Mengele's collection of twins was housed in a special block where he and the prisoner doctors who assisted him - which included a radiologist, an anthropologist, and a pathologist - carefully measured and examined the twins. In the anthropological exam, each body part was precisely measured. During measurements, which often lasted several hours, the twins stood naked in an unheated room, which was particularly exhausting for small children.Mengele ordered the establishment of a kindergarten for the children who served as subjects of his experiments and all Gypsy children under the age of six. Several hundred children stayed in the kindergarten from 8:00am to 2:00pm, cared for by several women prisoners. The kindergarten barracks were in better condition than others; their whitewashed walls were decorated with color paintings featuring scenes from fairy tales. The backyard was fenced as a playground, complete with sandbox, merry-go-round, swings, and exercise equipment.Twins in the experiments describe three days of what must have been psychological examination and three days of laboratory experiments. "Three times a week we were marched to Auschwitz to a big brick building, sort of like a big gymnasium. They would keep us there for about six or eight hours at a time - most of the days. We would have to sit naked in the large room where we first entered, and people in white jackets would observe us and write down notes. They also would study every part of our bodies. They would photograph, measure our heads, arms, and bodies, and compare the measurements of one twin to the other. The process seemed to go on and on."Principally because Mengele considered his "data base" of great scientific value, the twins were often better treated than other prisoners at Auschwitz. Regardless of age, he protected them from the harsh labor assignments and made sure that they had adequate rations. They remained exclusively at Mengele's disposal, which protected them from selections carried out among Jewish prisoners and from maltreatment by other prisoners and SS men. He was gentle with the children under his care, made sure they received enough food, even gave them toys and sweets taken from Jewish children consigned to extermination in the gas chambers. Children repaid him with trust and called him "good uncle." But no matter how well they were treated, Mengele never thought of them as people. They were always just subjects of his research. The final step of that research was always a post-mortem examination. The files were carefully arranged and the last document, the report of the dissection of the victim, was always on top.Mengele had no compunction whatsoever about personally killing twins as the final step of his research. On at least one occasion, a set of twins was killed just to resolve a dispute over a diagnosis between Mengele and other doctors. As it turned out, he had been wrong.Vera Alexandar, a Jewish prisoner posted to the barracks for twins in the Gypsy camp, testified: "One day Mengele brought chocolate and special clothes. The next day an SS man, on Mengele's instructions, took away two chileren aged about four. Two, perhaps three days later the SS man brought them back in a frightening condition. They had been sewn together like Siamese twins. The hunchbacked child was tied to the second one on the back and wrists. Mengele had sewn their veins together. The wounds were filthy and they festered. There was a powerful stench of gangrene. The children screamed all night long. Somehow their mother managed to get hold of morphine and put an end to their suffering."However, being a twin, regardless of age, meant survival in 1944. Some 3,000 children (or about 1,500 sets of twins) were selected for the experiments. They were not terrified of him, but rather they were often intimidated by some of what he did. They knew of his temper and his passion for his work. Yet, they were also aware of his role in their survival. "Being on Mengele’s list was better than being on no list."Mengele continued his careful measurement of twins even after the other experiments at Auschwitz had been discontinued.Of the children involved, only about 200 were alive when the camp was liberated by the Soviet Army on January 27th, 1945. These are the children shown so often in documentaries walking between the wire fences of the Auschwitz I camp. Today they reside all over the world, and they seek information on what was done to them. Their files have never been located and what was done to them remains a mystery today.In the summer of 1943, the Gypsy family camp at Birkenau was struck by a disease hitherto unknown among prisoners. Mengele was especially interested in the condition called water cancer, noma faciei, gangrene of the face, cheek, and mouth due to extreme debilitation, it primarily attacked children and young people. While it is clear that this rare disease was caused by the particularly deplorable conditions in Auschwitz, Mengele attempted to find racial and genetic causes for it.It is reported that a Professor Epstein told a comrade that "he (Mengele) has offered to prolong my life. Mind you, not to save it, just to prolong it, if I prepare a scientific paper on noma, which he would publish under his own name. It will keep him away from the front, he said, and justify his presence here as a scientist."Mengele's experimental interest was not limited to twins. In addition to his research on twins, Mengele maintained a "collection" of dwarves and people (especially Jews) with genetic abnormalities that he found on the arrival ramps.Particular interest was paid to heterochromia of the iris, manifested when one individual has eyes of two different colors. A final area of experimentation in which Mengele engaged were his attempts to change the color of eyes. In an effort to "Aryanize" prisoners with blonde hair and brown eyes, Mengele began to inject various chemicals into the eyes of his experimental subjects. Scientifically, of course, there is no way that injections of methylene blue can alter the color of eyes. The only result was pain and infections. Many of the children eventually recovered from the injections, but they led to death in one case and blindness in another.In addition to his experiments, Mengele assiduously collected "specimens" for Dr. Verschuer. Seven sets of twins with different colored eyes, for example, were killed with phenol injections and, after dissection, the eyes sent to his mentor. In 1944, Verschuer, then at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology wrote a proposal for new research in which he stated:"My asssistant Dr. Mengele has joined me in this branch of research. He is presently employed as Hauptsturmführer and concentration camp physician in the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Anthropological investigations on the most diverse racial groups of this concentration camp are being carried out with permission of SS Reichsführer Himmler, the blood samples are being sent to my laboratory for analysis. In fact, there was a steady stream of such specimens as the eyes mentioned above went to Dr. Verschuer."Mengele was also interested in dwarts and persons with innate abnormalities and treated them as he did other objects of scientific interest. Having placed them in separate barracks, he photographed them, carried out anthropological measurements, x-rayed them, collected their blood samples, then killed them or ordered other SS men to do so.With the end of the war Mengele became a fugitive. Dr. Josef Mengele fled from Auschwitz on January 18th, 1945, as the Soviet army advanced across the crumbling German Reich towards Berlin. Mengele was among the most wanted Nazi criminals, after Adolf Eichmann and Martin Borman.In June 1945, he was captured and brought to a U.S. prison camp in the town of Weiden. In July, he was transferred to the prison camp at Ingolstadt, Bavaria. Although Mengele's name was known to his captors in both camps, he was not identified as a principal war criminal, since the special units of U.S. military intelligence hunting down war criminals did not visit these two camps.One day he succeeded in escaping from the camp. Helped by friends, he managed to find shelter under the name of Fritz Hollman on the farm of Georg and Maria Fisher, where he worked as a farmhand and was kept informed of events through secret contacts with old Gunzburg friends. At first he aspired to continue his career as a research scientist, but it became increasingly apparent that the Allies were not going to let a notorious war criminal such as he simply resume the life he had enjoyed prior to the war without paying for the crimes he had committed during it. In 1946, he met his wife, Irene, who informed him that he had been wanted by the U.S. military since 1945. He also learned that Irene was living with another man and wanted a divorce.Mengele finally decided that he was no longer safe in Europe and using the "monastery route" escaped through Italy to an ocean liner bound for Argentina.Mengele arrived in Argentina in 1949, a country that was ruled by the popular dictator Juan Peron. The right-wing ruler had already cultivated a friendly relationship with Nazis in Europe, as well as with those who lived in the German expatriate community in Argentina. Mengele was able to slip unnoticed into such a setting with ease and had soon established a network of Nazi devotees who were willing to help him assume a new identity in South America.While he received aid and shelter from the neo-Nazi network in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, Mengele was also inadvertently assisted by a lack of commitment on the part of the West German government to bring the Angel of Death to justice, and a similar lack of commitment on the part of the United States Justice Department. Mengele felt so safe in 1956, that he traveled to Switzerland, where he met his son Rolf. In 1958, he became co-owner of a pharmaceutical firm, under his real name. The firm prospered, making Megele a rich man and a prominent member of a strong German expatriate community in Buenos Aires. Also in 1958, the widow of his brother Karl arrived from Gunzburg and married Mengele on July 25th in Uruguay.The Israeli government had no such lack of commitment to his capture, trial and execution. In fact, Israeli agents were close to seizing Mengele on a handful of occasions in the early-to-mid 1960s. However, international uproar over Israel's kidnapping of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann from Argentina in 1960, and pressing security issues involving hostile Arab states, sidetracked Israeli efforts to pursue Mengele.While Nazi-hunters such as Simon Wiesenthal continued to press for Mengele's capture and execution, the notorious Nazi doctor seemed to drop off the radar screen of most international governments. Interest in his case was suddenly reinvigorated when, on January 17th, 1985, a group of Auschwitz survivors returned to the death camp to memorialize friends and family who had perished there. A week later, many of the same survivors gathered in Jerusalem to try Mengele in absentia. The event was televised around the globe, and for four consecutive nights, the airwaves were filled with images of survivors recounting their gruesome, barbaric treatment at the hands of Josef Mengele. Within less than a month, both the United States Justice Department and the Israeli government had announced that the case of Josef Mengele was officially reopened and strategies were redrawn to bring the Nazi doctor to justice.However, these fledgling efforts were stopped in their tracks when, on May 31st, 1985, West German police raided the home of Hans Sedlmeier, a lifelong friend of Mengele's, and his contact person in Europe. The police seized several letters from Mengele and other German expatriates living with him in Brazil, and Brazilian authorities were immediately notified. Within a week Brazilian police had identified the families that had harbored Mengele, and through them were able to locate the grave where Mengele's body had been buried after he suffered a stroke while swimming in the ocean and drowned in 1979. In 1992, DNA tests on the skeletal remains confirmed that the body was indeed that of Josef Mengele. Survivors of Mengele's treatment who had longed all of their post-war lives to confront this cruel and demonic man denied that this could indeed be him. Many still live for the day when they will be able to extract justice for their suffering from the man who was responsible for so much of it, both during and after the war.His work, as with the other "experiments" carried out by other doctors at Auschwitz, died with him. Informants working with Mossad had seen him when the agents were in Buenos Aires. Mossad was able to locate the apartment he shared with his wife, and on one specific day even knew he was at home. But the next day, Mengele and his wife left the apartment for what the Mossad agents believed would be a temporary absence. By that time, the Israeli agents had already taken Eichmann into their custody and were holding him in a safe house while they waited to get him out of the country. They feared that if they waited for Mengele to return, the Eichmann operation would be discovered. He concludes that the Chinese "have no practical system to solve problems ... and basically they are just lazy." I do not want to add to any anxiety regarding leaving a narcissistic relationship, but fear is greatly reduced the more information we have.. The more awareness of what is truth.. what we will have to face, and how to work through it all without losing heart.. or giving in to the same..or another one. Wheww.. well it is so very easy to write it.I am starting with awareness of the traumas and conditions I will take along with me…and how to notice them, be gentle with them.. thank them for their service which is no longer needed.. and let them go. One moment at a time.. turns into a new world, I know it has to be true, with all my heart.*conditions do serve us when we are in an abusive relationship…like anxiety may keep us safe.. shutting up and hiding may keep us safe.. not expressing our feelings may keep us safe.. self abandonment.. may keep us safe.. when we are caught in the abuse… but when we are free.. we no longer need to worry about being safe.. we have left the monster. But.. precious CPTSD will come to the new world with you..but you can teach it to understand you are safe. I have found so much information out there to teach me to become aware.. how to settle down my own nervous system, and how to train my subconscious mind a new truth..I can speak or sing or be myself..and there is nothing coming to eat me. No lions here..not in my new world of freedom.We have to take the time and heart to simply notice and love ourselves…talk to ourselves a bit, understand how we are feeling and stop telling ourselves it is not ok..or we are not enough.. and all the other lies they implanted with their cruel black hearts..into our light. We have to stop leaving ourselves in a dark room without love and forgiveness and allowance of joy and eyes to see beauty and light... feel seen. When we are away.. we have to take ourselves, or we will run back to the place we left ourself.. with the narc. (There are no secret chains in the light)This is the biggest thing they steal..our identity.. the biggest trauma they leave.. we forget to remember ourselves. Our subconscious mind tells us in secret while we are not listening that we are the problem..and we are to be forgotten..for our own good. You have to know your mind is programmed this way… and tell it the real truth. If a child were crying because they were afraid of nothing.. would you limit how many times you told then they were ok? Or.. would you tell them to shut the hell up and stop that freakin crying.. you dumb ass kid? Well.. a little dramatic, but we need to realize how mean they train us to be to ourselves. We have to let ourselves out of the dark closet.. f.. them.. they don’t own us… but they will continue to..if we don’t know what parts of us they chain.I have spent my whole 48 years on this earth with one or both of two narcissists, my mother..then my husband. I went no contact with my mother almost 4 years ago.. and ran away with my husband and children. That was not too hard.. once I wrapped my mind around the fact that she would never stop hating and hurting me..and my kids. But him.. he was my way out… even though our marriage sucked..and always did, at least he was not her.No, man.. he was so much worse… starting day one.. NC with my mother. He knew he had me (I only realize all this now) all to himself now. A new state, no father, siblings, aunts, uncles.. cousins.. or mother. I was so vulnerable and I threw myself into a world that was not secure.. in my subconscious programming. One of my mother’s favorite things to tell me was.. no one would ever love or help me except for her. She was such a manipulative, crippling.. person. But I just thought I was nothing…something bad I could not understand.This is one of the traumas out of many you will have to take with you when you go.. you will feel so alone. They convince you that you are not worth eyes.. or ears in the world..and you will be hurt, unwelcomed, used, destroyed.. you will make the wrong choices (gaslighting for years will help you trust yourself the least out of everyone you know).. and people will never love you or understand you. In my case, I have never been alone in this life. without one or both of them making all my choices.. unless I rebelled.. well.. those where hard years..jees.Soon I will leave.. I so hope. I believe in myself a little now..enough to believe all will be ok somehow.. although I am still sore and anxious.. plainly scared. But.. I am so much more afraid of staying here and dying..alone anyway. At least if I am destined to be alone.. no one will be strangling me anymore or my children…that is my thinking.I will take with me.. chronic loneliness, a distorted and lied to subconscious program, cognitive dissonance, severe anxiety (which I control pretty well but it is still painful), CPTSD..(jumping, feelings of doom, fear of authority, crying when surprised.. choking even... sleep issues (can’t sleep deeply)..heart rate increase.. heat flashes.. jaws hurting.. and no energy. (fight or flight mode.. takes away your energy and impedes digestion..and many other things.)Two years ago I was walking miles a day.. then it was just too much after all the years and then NC with my mother and his increased control and cruelness at my weakness and my body gave way and said..no, now I can not find the will or energy to walk a block. My energy has gone. Damn. But I know.. with this healing heart.. it will come back in a way I have never known..with a little love and relief from the fight or flight hormones and wear and tear on my precious mind and body.I will take with me.. awareness.. information.. acceptance and love for myself and a desire to love and allow love..no matter what is or is not.. until I believe this life-saving truth.I am afraid.. but I consciously know that everything that scares me.. they were all lies. I know the shadow is not a monster.. but my body still disagrees..and panics. Now I act like a mother I never had.. and tell myself everything is alright, and never add judgment or assumptions to any shadow which scares me at night…until I believe it and sleep, dreaming of the true me.. allowed and alive.. loving.Love is all there is to heal us.. and love is light.. and light is awareness.. and awareness is all we have to do.. good thing, because at first.. that may be all we have the energy to do.. thanks to the vampires we so generously fed for way too long.Love, beauty, and strength.. new lotus-like..courage..colorful beauty springing out of the mud.You are a healer.-Leann
