What does "no gifts please" really mean for a child's birthday party?

My son recently had a birthday and we also specified no gifts. I truly didn't want any gifts. Firstly he goes to a school that has a fairly high number of children on free lunch and I didn't want anyone to feel like they couldn't come empty handed. Secondly we try to emphasize less materialism at home, I dislike the clutter from most gifts that he only plays with for a week and collects dust, and also he has sort of unique taste in toys so half the time he isn't terribly interested. We did have a few guests bring something anyway so I quietly thanked them and put them in an inconspicuous storage bin we had brought his other party supplies in (it was at a park) so as not to make anyone feel self conscious. I think next year I'll request cards so it's clear that gifts truly aren't necessary but different cultures have different ideas about what's expected of them at parties and there's no use trying to force a situation when everyone means well. I've never had a situation like other commenters where it said no gift but it was really an underhanded power play, that's truly bizarre and passive aggressive but I do think there are ways to minimize discomfort from guests who followed the invitation instructions when other guests don't. Namely, putting gifts out of sight and saving opening or thanks for thank you cards.

Is there any possibility of having a one-day Chief Minister as shown in the movie Nayak?

Theoretically - YesPractically - NoTo decide whether such a scenario is possible or not we need to know how the constitutional mechanism works in India. We have a Parliamentary system of government both at the Central and the state level. The party (or coalition of parties) that enjoys a majority in the Legislative Assembly/Parliament stakes claim to form the government. This party also elects a leader from among itself to become the Chief Minister/Prime Minister. The Governor/President, after having accepted the proposal of this party, invites the person chosen by the party to be the CM/PM to form the government. The CM/PM appointee nominates the names of those whom he wants to be Ministers in his government. The newly appointed CM/PM along with all other Ministers are administered an oath on a subsequent date. The term of the CM/PM (and the government) is said to begin on the day of the oath. Now, can the CM/PM let someone else take his position for a day? There are several intricacies involved here. The CM/PM cannot simply tell a person to become the CM/PM for the next day and then again return to his post the day after. However, the following set of possible events come closest to what was shown in the movie Nayak:The CM resigns, and this leads to a resignation (fall?) of the government. The majority party elects the other person (Anil Kapoor in the movie) to be the next CM and forwards the proposal to the Governor. The above mentioned procedure of invitation to form the government, selection of Ministers and taking of oath follows after which the odd guy becomes the new CM.(After one day) The previous CM (Ambreesh Puri in the movie) cannot come back and simply ask this new CM to vacate his office. The ex-CM is nothing more than a normal MLA now, he cannot give instructions to the incumbent CM. Nevertheless, if the new CM isn't in the mood to vacate his seat, the ex-CM may ask the MLAs of his party to initiate a Motion of no confidence in the Legislative Assembly (i.e. a voting be conducted in the LA to prove that the current CM doesn't enjoy the majority support in the House). Once the Motion has passed the CM (Anil Kapoor) has to resign and the majority party repeats steps 2 and 3 with the previous CM (Ambreesh Puri).Never take bollywood movies seriously.

Why is Donald Trump not invited to Prince Philip’s funeral?

Remember the dog that didn’t bark in the night in the Sherlock Holmes story “Silver Blaze"?When Holmes learns that a dog didn't bark when it should have, he deduces that it was because the dog knew the perp. That's how Dr. Watson learns that what doesn’t happen can be as significant as what does.Applying this lesson to Prince Philip’s funeral: he dictated every aspect of the kind of funeral he wanted. Had he wanted Trump there, he would have left instructions for his survivors to invite him. Since Trump wasn't there, we can assume that Philip didn’t want him to be invited and may even have left specific instructions to that effect.Philip was a stickler for protocol. He could not have been happy that during his state visit, Trump crossed in front of the Queen (who was, after all, Philip's wife and a nonagenarian), which in addition to being rude might have caused her to trip and fall. Trump also wore an ill-fitting tuxedo to the state dinner as if he thought it was a costume party, and he informed the Palace that he was bringing his entire family to the dinner although they hadn't been invited.Who would want such a boor at their funeral?
