PDF Editor FAQ

If Scotland leaves the UK and becomes an independent country, will many Scots move south to stay in the United Kingdom?

Your question presumes they will be able to. The assumption seems to be that Scots will have a right of residence/to work in rUK. I would expect that Scots already domiciled in rUK will be granted leave to stay, but it is by no means clear that there would be a right to do so after independence.Looking at the EU/UK situation post-Brexit, it is clear that the status quo at Brexit will be adhered to on both sides, but post-Brexit it is not the case that EU citizens can simply migrate to the UK to work. Hence, I see no reason why Scots would be able to, given that there will be a border between the two countries and that Scotland would become a foreign power after independence. All of this, would of course, be part of the negotiations. The difficulty at the moment lies in trying to establish what the rUK government’s attitude to Scotland will be. The SNP’s openly hostile attitude to the UK government may lead to an inate resentment on the part of the government and this may come back to bite the SNP, if rUK plays hardball. After all, unless it is in rUK’s interest to agree to something the SNP wants, there is no incentive to grant whatever is being sought. Indeed, in some circumstances it might make no difference to rUk to agree something, but sheer spite might be used to refuse it.For example, take DVLA. Post independence, Scotland will probably want to have control of its own equivalent for vehicles on its roads and will want the revenue that comes with it. However, the cost of setting up a Scottish equivalent will be expensive (I’ve seen an estimate of about £500 million). Scotland may well ask rUK to carry on the work on their behalf, for an agreed fee. If minded to the government could agree and pocket the fee, or they could just say ‘no’ and simply hand over the database and software used and leave it to Scotland to set up on its own, regardless of whether it is ready or not. That’s just one ‘simple’ area. There are many others. What should be clear to everyone involved is that the UK government will have no incentive to make Scottish life easier and, depending on the attitude of the UK population, may well find that taking a tough line will be electorally favourable. Anyone who thinks things would all be plain sailing had better get real!!

Why do the British drive on the left-hand side of the road?

I looked this up a few decades ago when I had people telling me I am from a country where we drive on the wrong side of the road - this is what I found out back then.Historically, you can go back to the Roman times (and well before this, but lots of historical data showing this from the Romans and the way they fought and traveled, so best example) and show that we all used to travel on the left side of the road. And if you have ever ridden a horse you would know that you always mount on the left (not from the middle of the road, but from the side of the road way back then). - thanks to Tim Restuvelli for this suggested link - Driving on the left or rightThink about it, years ago solders were taught to be a team and all taught to do the same thing. You have a shield held with the left and a sword/spear or other weapon held on the right and want to pass someone coming the other way in a passive nonthreatening manner, you pass with the protection on the outside (shield side outermost) leaving you unprotected. Thus indicating your intention as you approach - I am a friendly person. If you want to be aggressive you approach on the right so you can defend yourself with the shield and attack from behind it. Think about how the solders back then could form a wall of shields and work in unison.Or another example you can see even today - think about which side the riders are on in a jousting tournament. It makes no difference whether you were on horseback or walking, or whether you are left or right handed, it all came down to how solders were taught to fight. So when vehicles were introduced, it followed suit for countries to adopt this method. The fact that some moved to the right is reported to be because of the French revolution (lots of articles online about this very subject if you want to look it up). The nobility used to travel on the left down the roads/paths/tracks on horseback or in carriages without slowing or avoiding the lowly peasants. So peasants used to stay to the right, this way they could also see the oncoming nobles well before they were in danger. For the same reason that if you are forced to walk on the road (not enough room for footpaths), you should always walk facing the oncoming vehicles - it is even illegal in some countries to walk in the same direction as the traffic. Then after the revolution and most of the nobles losing their heads, the peasants stayed this way - on the right - as they did not want to be seen on the side of the nobles and maybe lose their heads as well. See here - Why do the French drive on the right? - Jottings………………………………………………….Edit - Or quote - “The fact is, before the Revolution, the aristocracy travelled on the left of the road, forcing the peasantry over to the right, but after the storming of the Bastille and the subsequent events, aristocrats preferred to keep a low profile and joined the peasants on the right. An official keep-right rule was introduced in Paris in 1794, more or less parallel to Denmark, where driving on the right had been made compulsory in 1793.” - Why do some countries drive on the left and others on the right? - World Standards……………………………………………………………….So for thousands of years the left was considered passive and the right was considered aggressive or in the case of the French peasants, a necessity.I can also see how in the US that keeping to the right would have been another form of rebellion against the English. Not sure if it is true as I have never looked it up, but sounds logical to me, just like how in the US coffee became the popular drink in preference to tea. Or maybe the French supporters had a whisper in their ears. :-)…………………….Edit - I have done some reseach on this now and the US decision was initially inflenced by teamsters (walking on the left so they could use the whip easier) and this lead to Henry Ford deciding to make his Model T ford with left hand drive. Prior to the Model T, he had made right hand drive vehicles. (quote - A right-hand drive Model T is interesting because it’s Henry Ford’s Model T that is credited with shifting the American driver’s position from the right side of the car to the left. - Rare right-hand drive Ford Model T delivers smiles)…………………………..There is no correct side nowadays and I have found after living in a lot of countries, it is just as easy to drive on either side.……………..Edit - for me, the position of the steering wheel and where I am sitting in the car is normally a dead giveaway as to which side of the road you should be on.……………………….The only time you can claim someone is driving on the wrong side is for example like when I drove an English car through Europe. I was sitting on the right side of the car and this was closest to the gutter, so it made it harder to see properly. Well it did help getting the car really close to the gutter when parking. :-) But when cars are flashing past at or over 100kph on a narrow 2 lane road and you are driving from the wrong side of the car, it takes a little getting used to. It also explains why we drive on the side of the car closest to the middle of the road.If they were to make more cars with driving positions like the Mclaren F1 (driver sits in the middle of the car for those who don’t know this car) or when they finally introduce driverless vehicles, it would not matter at all.Edit 1 - For all those who are not aware, horse-drawn vehicles had drivers sit on the right side and hold the reins with the left hand. This was so when they used a whip (with the right hand), it could be freely used (not hampered with the wagon in the way and no chance of hitting the passenger).Plenty of old photos show that even in the US (all Wells Fargo stagecoaches were right-hand drive), they drove from the right side of vehicles. A big giveaway is that the brake was mounted on the right side.Several pictures here - simple question: Why does America drive on the right? but more can easily be found with a quick online search.Edit 2 - This is part of my reply to another person’s comment. I thought it good to include especially because of the handshake links:Staying on the left is more passive and peaceful.Staying on the right is more aggressive and used when attacking.Keeping to the left allows the oncoming person to more easily see your right hand - whether it is left empty so that it can be readied to shake your hand.Check out these articles on the 2,500 year old history of the handshake - Handshake History and What is the origin of the handshake? Please do not think I am trying to be absolute because not all societies did the handshake, but it helps explain staying on the left side as being peaceful. Some, like the Japanese, traditionally bowed to each other with their hands open by their sides. Then there are the New Zealand Maori people, who rub noses as a greeting. Now that would be funny trying to do while on horseback; I could see the potential for a lot of headbanging going on and a few bloody noses. :-)EDIT 3 Henry Ford’s first cars were right-hand drive (Models A, C, N and S).Ford changed to left-hand drive in the 1908 with the Model T Ford.“It might sound strange, but placing steering wheels on the left side of cars wasn't standard in the U.S. It was a design decision that changed the entire automobile industry--in spite of its seemingly oddball nature. The success of the left-hand-drive Model T led to a standardized layout in both the U.S. and Europe.”Quote - The Model T: The Unexpected Lessons Behind One of History's Biggest Design MarvelsEdit 4 Just for all those people out there who want to use opinion instead of fact, there is no correlation between why the Briisish drive on the left and the French drive on the right. And it had not5hing to do with some inate hatred of each other. The British are on the left because they had done so from at least the Roman times and reinforced later due to several reasons mentioned above. The French drive on the right due to how that the Aristocrats and peasants used the road prior and after the revolution - all Napoleon did was make travelling on the right official French policy. Please do not continue with the opinionated and incorrect replies. And for all those who continue claiming my answer is too long, the very reason it has ended up this long is because too many people repeatedly use incorrect arguements and opinions (usually the same type of opinions and arguements) leading me to then answer them with the correct facts and forcing me to add it to my answer as an edit in the hope they will understand the real reasons (some edits placed in the best position to be noticed as I am tired of continually reacting to replies with the same information).

Where is the best place in Istanbul for a leisurely bike ride?

You can try in some parts of the Bosphorus, the European side. A beautiful view and some interrupted but a long bike ride… Also a long bike ride beginning from Caddebostan to Kartal is possible. The Princes Islands are also a possibility, since there’s almost no other vehicles are not allowed.
